Siamo arrivati! Manca poco più di un mese all’International Music Summit di Ibiza. Nato nel 2008 dalla mente di Pete Tong, con la collaborazione di altri, l’IMS è uno degli eventi con maggior sfaccettature al mondo. Può esser visto come l’apertura della stagione Ibizenica, come l’opportunità di poter ascoltare alcuni dei Dj più amati del momento o come l’occasione per poter capire meglio cosa c’è dietro tutta la musica che ascoltiamo a casa o nei club. Quello che Tong vuole dal Summit è l’opportunità di ragionare, valutare e arrivare a nuove idee che possano dare un’ulteriore spinta alla realtà musicale elettronica e al business che le gira vorticosamente attorno. Quest’anno avremo come headliner 2ManyDjs e con loro Dubfire, Pete Tong e Jason Bentley per i Dj set; in live set avremo Hercules & Love Affair e The Japanese Popstar. Tutto ciò nel cuore di Ibiza, in una location da sogno. Oltre all’ascoltare la musica, il cuore del summit saranno le conferenze, le interviste inerenti agli ambiti più disparati: avremo lo Swedish House Mafia Team, si parlerà di Las Vegas, del Brasile, di nuovi festival, di nuove etichette e di molto altro ancora. Anche quest’anno, dal 25 al 27 maggio, ci si farà un’idea di quello che sarà il futuro dell’elettronica. Abbiamo raggiunto telefonicamente Pete mentre si trovava a Londra per sentire da lui come sarà questa quarta edizione!
Iniziamo prima con qualche domanda sul passato, come sempre. Ormai siamo alla quarta edizione dell’IMS; come nacque la prima edizione del summit? Raccontaci la genesi di tutto!
Beh, alla base c’è il nostro forte legame con l’isola. Io e gli altri abbiamo molta cura dell’isola; ci ha regalato momenti stupendi e abbiamo deciso di contribuire alla sua crescita creando qualcosa di diverso, qualcosa di diverso dai classici party ibizenici, qualcosa che si distingua dalla concezione pura della parola “party”. Come sappiamo tutti, il top dell’ispirazione, delle feste è la stagione estiva di Ibiza, ma sentivamo che c’era bisogno di un confronto musicale, e abbiamo pensato di farlo prendendo i migliori dj su campo internazionale e organizzando discussioni sulle questioni del momento. Abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato un qualcosa di bello ma allo stesso tempo di utile, così è iniziato tutto!
Quello che fate è qualcosa non solo di interessante, ma anche di fondamentale per tutto ciò che riguarda il business della musica elettronica. Quello che mi chiedo è: come fare ad unire il business all’anima, alla musica? Come pensi riusciate a bilanciare questi due aspetti?
Il punto è che se riesci a riunire nello stesso luogo persone popolari e con un grande carisma musicale tutto si monta da solo: c’è grande musica, ma c’è anche la voglia di parlare, di discutere. Insieme agli artisti ci sono promoters, labels e tutto questo porta alla creazione di qualcosa di diverso, di interessante e di utile. Per noi non è assolutamente complicato unire questi due aspetti, anzi è qualcosa di naturale l’unire la musica al business che gli gira intorno.
L’IMS non è un festival per le masse, è qualcosa per un ristretto gruppo di persone. Come mai da sempre avete seguito questa linea guida?
Quando inizi qualcosa è sempre facile se proponi qualcosa di veramente fico! Poi con il tempo tutto potrebbe scemare. Quando abbiamo iniziato non eravamo in molti, eravamo qualche centinaio. Il fatto di proporre qualcosa di ristretto, qualcosa che si focalizzasse su determinate tematiche e problematiche, ha attirato le persone giuste: coloro che veramente sono interessate a tutto ciò. La gente viene perché sa che non è una “festa” come tutte le altre, sa qual’è il programma di ogni singola giornata del summit. Ovviamente abbiamo in mente di espanderci, di ingrandirci. Il nostro obbiettivo è quello di arrivare a presentare una settimana dedicata alla musica e a tutto quello che le orbita intorno.
Cosa ci sarà di nuovo in questa quarta edizione?
Beh, noi cerchiamo ogni anno di essere sempre più innovatori, provocatori con le discussioni che proponiamo durante le giornate. Proponiamo contenuti originali e facciamo in modo che il summit sia dinamico ed interessante. Abbiamo cambiato l’organizzazione delle giornate e dato maggiore importanza al business musicale.
Su che basi scegli gli artisti da invitare?
Mmmh.. Persone che ci piacciono (ride). No a parte gli scherzi peschiamo sempre dal passato e dal futuro. Inoltre devi anche tenere in considerazione che dobbiamo vendere tickets e contemporaneamente avere una line-up originale. Oltretutto la venue è pazzesca e questo è un altro motivo per cui artisti come 2ManyDjs, Hercules & Love affair e tutti gli altri che invitiamo sono felici di venire a suonare da noi.
Perché come location avete scelto proprio Ibiza e non qualcosa come Miami?
Beh nonostante Miami sia diventata fondamentale, Ibiza resta sempre l’isola che influenza l’intero mondo dell’elettronica. Poi lo si vede dal successo che hanno gli artisti che si sono fatti lì… Guarda quanti fan ha su Facebook David Guetta ad esempio… Quindi perché non Ibiza!? Non ci sono posti su questo pianeta come quello… Location pazzesche, feste magnifiche, Djs grandiosi e tutto ciò 7 notti alla settimana. Dalla fine di maggio alla fine di settembre c’è sempre qualcosa sull’isola, 24 ore su 24. Las Vegas sta diventando importante con le sue opere, le sue feste e i Djs di fama mondiale, ma ti ripeto, per noi Ibiza è l’unica scelta possibile… E’ stata una scelta naturale! Tutti gli altri posti, che sicuramente sono fondamentali, non hanno la costanza che ha Ibiza; Miami sì è grandiosa, ma in brevi periodi dell’anno, per alcune settimane. Nessuno genera il giro di soldi che genera l’Isola. Ripeto: è stata una scelta naturale!

We’ve arrived! Missing just over a month to the International Music Summit of Ibiza. It was born in 2008 from an idea of Pete Tong, with the cooperation of others. The IMS is one of the events with more facets in the world. It can be seen as the opening of the next Ibizan season, as the opportunity to listen to some of the most popular DJ of the moment or as an opportunity to understand what there is behind all the music we hear at home or in the clubs. What Tong wants to do with the Summit, is the opportunity to discuss, evaluate and arrive at new ideas that will give added impetus to the reality of electronic music and to the business that spins around it. This year 2ManyDjs will be the headliner, and with them Dubfire, Pete Tong for the Dj sets. Talking about Live set, Hercules & Love Affair and The Japanese Popstar will play at the summit. Everything in the heart of Ibiza, in a dream location. In addition to listening to music, the heart of the summit will be lectures, interviews relating to different areas: there will be the Swedish House Mafia Team, conferences about Las Vegas, Brazil, new festivals, new labels and much more. So, again, this year, from 25th to 27th of May, we can know something new about the future of electronics. We reached Pete by telephone, while he was in London, to ask him something about this 4th edition!
Let’s start with the past: this will be the fourth edition of the IMS; How and Why the first edition of the summit was born? Tell us something about the genesis of the Internetional Music Summit!
Well, the basis is our strong ties with the island. I love that island, it has given us wonderful moments and we wanted to contribute to its growth by creating something different from the usual parties, something that stands out from the pure conception of the word “party”. As we all know Ibiza is the top destination of the summer season, but we felt that we needed a musical centrepoint, and we decided to do it by taking the best DJs of the moment and organizing discussions on the issues of the moment. We thought it would be fun but at the same time useful, so it all started!
What you do is something not only interesting but also fundamental to everything turns around the business of electronic music. What I wonder is: how do you combine the business part with that one of the soul, of the music? How do you manage to balance these two aspects?
If you bring people together with musical charisma in the same place, everything will work by itself. There is great music, but there is also the desire to talk, to discuss. As well as the artists, there will be promoters, labels and all this leads to the creation of something different, interesting and useful. For us it’s not complicated to combine these two aspects, rather it’s something natural to combine music with the business that it revolves around.
The IMS is not a festival for the masses, it is something for a small group of people. Why did you decide to follow this guideline?
When you start something is always easier if you propose small and then everything could grow with time. When we started we were a few hundred. Creating something for a small group of people, something that focuses on specific issues and problems has attracted the right people – those who are truly interested in everything we are doing. People come because they know that the IMS is not a “party” like others, they know the programme of each day of the summit. Obviously, we are planning to expand the summit. Our goal is to arrive to present a week dedicated to the music and to the bussines connected.
What will be new in this fourth edition?
Well, every year we try to be more innovative and provocative with the discussions we organize during the days. We offer original content and make sure that the summit is dynamic and interesting. We changed the organization of the day and we have given greater importance to the music business.
How do you choose the artists to invite?
Hmmm… People we like (laughs). I’m joking, we take artists from the past and from the future. In addition you must also take in consideration that we have to sell tickets and simultaneously have an original line-up. Plus, the venue is crazy and this is why artists like 2ManyDjs, Hercules & Love Affair and all the others are glad to play at the summit.
Why did you choose Ibiza as location and not something like Miami?
Miami is great, but Ibiza is still the island that affects the entire electronic world. There are not places on this planet like it. Crazy locations, great parties, great DJs, and all seven nights a week. From the end of May to the end of September there is always something on the island, 24 hours a day. Las Vegas is becoming important also with festivals and world-renowned DJs, but I think for us Ibiza was the natural choice.
All other places do not have the consistency that Ibiza has. Miami is so great for music, but only in one week of the year. No one raises money like the island. I repeat: it was a natural choice!
