Gregor Tresher è il dj che aspira a creare musica che ti fa “ballare e piangere allo stesso tempo” e che gira il mondo per inventare con i suoi set viaggi emotivi nei quali immergersi. Dopo l’immediato, e per lui inaspettato, successo dei primi due album “A Thousand Nights” e “The Life Wire” è da poco uscito il nuovo “Lights From The Inside”, sulla sua label Break New Soil.
Come ti sei avvicinato alla musica elettronica?
E’ stata una specie di evoluzione naturale, sono cresciuto con la musica synth-pop degli anni Ottanta e poi durante la mia adolescenza c’è stata l’esplosione della musica techno nella Germania degli anni Novanta.
Che musica ascoltavi da ragazzo?
Synth Pop, Depeche Mode, New Order, Anne Clark, Heaven 17, The Human League, Yazoo etc. etc.
Sei tedesco e com’è risaputo la Germania ha alcuni tra i migliori dj e produttori. In che modo la tua città, Francoforte, ha influenzato la tua musica?
Francoforte e la sua scena techno degli anni Novanta sono state le influenze più grandi per la mia musica quando ero piccolo, e penso si capisca dal mio sound ancora oggi.
Quali sono gli artisti che ispirano le tue produzioni, e in genere ciò che fai, con le loro vite, anche al di fuori del contesto musicale?
Martin L. Gore come compositore, Laurent Garnier come dj, e poi molte band, come ad esempio i Cure o i Placebo.
Come pensi sia cambiato il mondo della musica da quando hai iniziato a suonare?
Beh, con il digitale l’industria è completamente cambiata e mentre 15 anni fa far uscire la tua musica poteva essere un modo per guadagnarsi da vivere, oggi è tutto incentrato sui tour e sulle esibizioni.
In questi ultimi anni il mondo della musica elettronica è cambiato molto. Ora possiamo trovare questo tipo di musica anche al di fuori dei club, per esempio nei teatri o nelle sfilate. Cosa ne pensi? Secondo te è una scena ancora in evoluzione, o è un mondo già venuto alla luce, non più così underground?
I primi tempi, quando la musica techno era un genere underground, erano emozionanti, adesso è in circolazione da più di vent’anni e quindi ormai è qualcosa di più di un genere affermato. Le cose belle di solito non restano underground per molto tempo, quindi credo che non ci sia niente di male se la techno è “commercialmente di successo”.
Cosa credi che ricerchi oggi la gente nella musica elettronica?
Parlando di musica dance elettronica penso che siano le solite cose a piacere alle gente, cioè il groove e l’atmosfera.
La musica elettronica è un linguaggio universale, emozionale, relativo alla mente, non ha bisogno di parole o testi, è il suono che parla. Sei d’accordo?
Sì. E’ musica dance, quindi unisce le persone grazie al groove piuttosto che alle parole. Comunque credo che delle buone tracce lavorino su più livelli. Nella musica dance ho sempre inteso le parole come un qualcosa di più di una piccola componente, come un qualsiasi altro suono.
Produci musica, suoni live e fai il dj, 3 in 1. Ma hai detto che fare il dj è la tua prima professione, che ormai fai da circa vent’anni. Nel 2004 c’è stata la tua prima produzione, uscita sulla Datapunk. Sono due modi molto diversi di approcciarsi alla musica, puoi dirci cosa ti piace di più dei due aspetti?
Sono stato un dj a lungo prima di iniziare a scrivere musica mia e per me sono due cose diverse. Quando l’industria è cambiata i produttori hanno cominciato a diventare dj perchè sono i tour che ti permettono di guadagnare. Un buon produttore non per forza è un buon dj, e viceversa. Ho sempre cercato di separare le due cose, e l’ho fatto in special modo con le produzioni del mio ultimo album. Ma ovviamente esibirmi e girare in tour influenza i miei lavori in studio.
Quali sono le differenze tra i tuoi dj set e i tuoi live set?
Beh, la differenza maggiore è che quando suono live suono solo la mia musica, e questa è una delle ragioni per cui non mi piace farlo spesso, così come non voglio rovinarmi la mia musica, perchè sarebbe questo che accadrebbe se suonassi le stesse tracce due volte ogni week end per un anno o giù di lì.
Come mai hai deciso di iniziare a produrre dopo venti anni da dj? Sentivi qualche bisogno particolare?
Come ho detto prima ho iniziato a produrre verso la fine degli anni Novanta, quindi non è stato venti anni fa, ma circa quattro o cinque. Probabilmente ad un certo punto ogni dj desidera lavorare sulla sua musica, ma io volevo imparare a non dipendere solo dagli altri produttori e volevo esprimere le mie idee. Non sono molto avvezzo a compromessi quando si tratta di musica in generale, per questo non faccio molte collaborazioni.
Pensi che oggi chi vuole essere un dj di successo dovrebbe prima essere un produttore?
No, penso che dovrebbe essere il contrario.
Parlaci dei tuoi due album. Ti aspettavi un successo così immediato?
No, ma comunque non è stato proprio un successo immediato dato che ho prodotto musica per molto tempo prima di “A Thousand Nights”. Ma ovviamente sono stato molto contento del successo dei due album.
Produrre un album è un processo lungo, qual è il lavoro tecnico ed emotivo che c’è dietro? Cosa desideri comunicare con le tue creazioni?
La parte più difficile è mettere insieme le prime canzoni. Non appena hai due o tre canzoni allora tutto è più facile. Sono molto critico verso la mia musica, quindi arrivare ad un punto in cui mi piace sul serio richiede tempo. Le migliori tracce secondo me hanno un impatto emotivo sulla gente ed è questo che tento di fare con la mia musica.
Ho letto che tu “aspiri a creare quello che una volta un altro produttore ha saggiamente definito ‘musica che ti fa ballare e piangere allo stesso tempo”, è una definizione interessante e molto bella, ce la spieghi?
Mi è sempre piaciuta la musica con un tocco malinconico, quindi è anche quello che cerco di esprimere tramite la mia musica. Credo che la traccia perfetta lavori su più livelli, quindi non deve essere eccitante solo sulla pista, ma anche emotivamente.
Hai detto che per te un dj set è come un viaggio emozionate. Cos’è che rende buono un dj set e quali sono le abilità che deve avere il dj?
Un buon dj set per me deve avere delle ascese e delle cadute al suo interno e trasportare chi balla in un viaggio. Mi è sempre piaciuto se un dj nel suo dj set ha avuto la capacità di includere musica di stili diversi nell’ambito della musica elettronica e questo lo apprezzo ancora oggi.
E come pensi debba essere un buon produttore per emergere?
Penso che un buon produttore di musica elettronica debba avere un suo stile e le persone dovrebbero riconoscere le sue produzioni da questo.
Credi che oggi gli artisti abbiano queste capacità?
Certo! Ci sono delle fantastiche uscite ogni settimana.
Oggi molti ragazzi tentano di diventare dj o produttori, affascinati da questo mondo. Che ne pensi? C’è qualche consiglio che vorresti dargli?
Beh, il mio consiglio è quello di pensare bene se è davvero quello che vogliono fare e se la risposta è sì non fatelo in modo freddo ed incerto, metteteci tutta la vostra energia!
Perchè hai deciso di fondare una tua etichetta discografica? Qual è il concetto che c’è dietro?
L’ho fondata per fare uscire il mio album “The Life Wire”, semplicemente perchè volevo avere il dominio totale su cose come l’artwork, la data di uscita, il formato, ecc. Poi ho iniziato a ricevere dei demo dalle persone e così abbiamo deciso di pubblicarli. Adesso siamo come una piccola famiglia con persone che continuano ad uscire sulla Break New Soil e con le nostre prime labelnights nei club dell’Europa stiamo cercando di portare il progetto Break New Soil ad un nuovo livello.
Negli ultimi dieci anni sono emerse molte etichette, credi che sia un modo più facile per emergere?
Non credo. Prima del digitale le persone dovevano effettivamente investire dei soldi quando facevano uscire della musica. Un buon mastering, gli artwork, la stampa dei vinili, ecc. Oggi molte label fanno solo uscire la musica senza preoccuparsi della qualità. Ma tutto ciò prima o poi ripulirà il mercato, perchè la qualità è importante. La Break New Soil rilascia sempre anche il vinile delle nostre uscite, investe negli artwork e nel mastering, semplicemente perchè penso che la musica e gli artisti se lo meritino.
Hai sempre viaggiato molto, quale pensi che sia il paese più aperto verso questo tipo di musica?
Penso che i Paesi Bassi siano sempre uno dei migliori paesi per la musica elettronica, ma credo che abbiamo delle ottime comunità di questo tipo di musica in tutta Europa.
Oggi la musica elettronica è influenzata da vari generi musicali, c’è un grande eclettismo, un continuo scambio con gli altri campi artistici. Credi che questo sia un passo avanti nel contesto? Come pensi che si evolverà?
Certamente lo è, è un qualcosa che porterà la musica elettronica ad un livello successivo, ed è un ottima cosa che tutto il contesto techno sia cresciuto, ormai è conosciuto ed accettato da tutti come un genere musicale serio. Abbiamo fatto molta strada 😉

How did you approach to electronic music?
It was kind of a natural progression from growing up with Synth pop in the eighties and then beeing a teenager while Techno exploded in Germany in the early nineties.
What kind of music did you listen to when you was a child?
Synth Pop, Depeche Mode, New Order, Anne Clark, Heaven 17, The Human League, Yazoo etc. etc.
You are German and this country has for sure great djs and producers. In what ways has your city, Frankfurt, influenced your music?
Frankfurt and it´s Techno scene in the nineties was one of the biggest influences on my music when I was younger, and I guess you can hear that in the sound of it until today.
Are there any artists that inspire your productions and in general what you do, with their lives, even out of the musical context?
Martin L. Gore as a songwriter, Laurent Garnier as a DJ, and a lot of bands, like The Cure or Placebo for example.
How has the music world changed since you started playing?
Well, with the digital copy the whole industry changed and while releasing music was something you could make a living of 15 years ago, it´s all about touring and playing gigs nowadays.
The electronic music world has changed a lot during recent years. Now we can find this kind of music even outside the clubs, for example in theatres and fashion shows. What do you think about? Is this a scene still in progress, or is it a world already came to light, no longer underground?
As exciting it was in the early days when Techno was an Underground style of music, it has been around for more than twenty years now and so it is more of an established musical genre nowadays. Good things usually don´t stay underground for long, so I guess there´s nothing wrong with Techno beeing more “commercially succesful”.
What are people looking for today in electronic music?
Speaking of electronic dance music I think it are always the same things that people like about it, and those are groove and atmosphere.
Electronic music is a universal, emotional and mental language, it needs no words or lyrics, the sound speaks. Do you agree with this?
Yes I do. It is dancemusic, so it connects to people through groove rather than words. I think a good tracks operates on multiple levels though. I always understood Vocals in dancemusic more as kind of an element like any other sound.
Producing music, live sets and djing, 3 in 1. But you said that djing is your first profession, you have been doing this for almost twenty years. In 2004 your first production, released on Datapunk Records. These are two different ways of approaching music, can you tell us what do you like about each aspects?
I have been a DJ long before I started to write my own music and it is two different things to me. As the industry changed, producers suddenly started to become DJs because touring is where the money is nowadays. A good producer doesn´t necessarily make a good DJ and vice-versa. I always tried to separate the two things, and I did especially with the production of this album. But of course playing gigs and touring influences me when working in the studio.
What are the differences between your dj sets and your live sets?
Well, the biggest difference is that I am only playing my own music when playing live – and that is one of the reasons why I don´t want to do it too often, as I don´t want to ruin my own music for me, because that´s what would happen if I would have to play the same tracks twice every weekend for a year or so. A thing I like about Djing is to be able to play new tracks every week to keep it exciting for the people but also for myself.
Why did you start making music after twenty years of djing? Were you looking for something special?
Well, as I mentioned before, I started to make my own music in the late nineties, so it wasn´t 20 years but maybe 5 or 6. At some point every DJ probably wants to work on his own music but I wanted to learn it myself to not depend on other producers and to be able to express my own ideas. I´m not very good in compromising when it comes to music in general, that´s why I don´t do a lot of collaborations.
Do you think that today someone who aspires to be a successful dj should be first a producer?
No, I think it should be the other way round.
Tell us something about your two albums. Did you expect such an immediate success?
No I didn´t, however it never felt like immediate success as I had been releasing music long before I did ”A Thousand Nights“. I was very happy with the success of the albums of course.
Producing an album is a long process, what is the emotional and technical work behind it? What would you like to communicate with your creations?
The hardest part is to get the first songs together. As soon as you have two or three songs that you really like everything goes easier. I am very critical about my own music, so getting to a point where I really like a track of my own usually takes some time. The best tracks in my opinion have an emotional impact on people, and that´s what I am trying to do with my music.
I read that you “aspire to create what another producer once sagely called ‘music that makes you dance and cry at the same time’”, this is a beautiful and interesting expression, could you explain it?
I always liked music with a melancholic touch, so of course that is something that I try to express with my own music, too. I think a perfect track operates on multiple levels and not only is exciting on the dancefloor but also on an emotional level.
You said that for you a dj set is like an exciting voyage. What makes a dj set good and what are the abilities that a dj should have?
A good DJ-set for me has a rise and fall in it and takes the dancers on a trip. I always liked if DJs had the ability to include music from different styles within electronic music in their sets and still present it in a nice way.
And what do you think a good producer should be like to stand out?
I think a good producer in electronic music should have his own signature sound and people should recognize his productions from that.
Do you think that artists today have these abilities?
Of course! There are new great releases every week.
Today lots of young people are trying to be djs or producers, fascinated by this music world. What do you think about it? Is there any advice that you’d like to give to them?
Well, my advice would be to re-think if that´s what they really want to do and if the answer is yes – don´t do it half-hearted but with all your energy.
Why did you start your own record label? What is the idea behind it?
I started it to release my last album “The Life Wire”, simply because I wanted to have total control over things like artwork, release dates, formats etc. But then I started to get demos from people and we started to release them as well. We now have a nice little label family with people who continue to release on Break New Soil and with our first labelnights in clubs around Europe we are trying to bring the project Break New Soil to a new level.
Over the past ten years many new labels have emerged, do you think is it because this is an easier way to stand out?
I don´t think so. Before the whole digital thing, people actually had to invest money when the released music. Good mastering, artwork, pressing vinyl etc etc. Nowadays a lot of labels just release music and don´t care about quality. But that´s a fact that will sooner or later clean the market again, because quality is important. With Break New Soil we always press vinyl of our releases, we invest in artwork and mastering, just because I think the music and artists deserve it.
You have always traveled a lot, which is in your opinion the country more open-minded and ready for this kind of music?
I think the Netherlands are still one of the best countries for electronic music, but I think we have a great electronic music community all over Europe.
Today electronic music is influenced by various genres of music, there is a great eclecticism, a non-stop exchange with other artistic fields. Do you think that this is an advance in the context? How do you think this will evolve?
Of course, that´s something that will bring electronic music to the next level, and it´s a good thing that the whole Techno thing has grown up now – it is widely known and also accepted as a serious musical genre. We´ve come a long way 😉
