Quando arrivi già a 18 e 20 anni a suonare in tutti i migliori club del mondo è difficile non provare per loro un pò di invidia. Un sogno che hanno realizzato subito i due fratelli Martinez, creando un’alchimia perfetta e conquistando migliaia di fans attraverso un sound freschissimo e inevitabilmente legato all’essenza della house music americana. I due non hanno mai smesso di crederci, di imparare dagli amici e soprattutto dal padre, primo fan assoluto dei suoi “mostri”. La mano di Dennis Ferrer li ha poi portati alla luce della ribalta, rendendoli protagonisti prima in uno dei club più rinomati di NY come lo Shelter e poi nei vari tours mondiali. Nel frattempo hanno affinato le loro tecniche di produzione e di mixing utilizzando i software più avanzati con risultati eccellenti. Ora non si parla più di loro come una sorpresa, ma come una splendida e felice realtà, almeno finchè non decideranno di separarsi…

La cosa che subito salta all’occhio è la vostra giovanissima età. Molti artisti prima di esibirsi nei migliori clubs devono aspettare diversi anni, per voi invece la celebrità è arrivata subito. Vi ritenete fortunati per questo?
Aver fatto irruzione nel panorama elettronico internazionale molto presto è stato senz’altro stupendo, ma allo stesso tempo non è stato facile e ha richiesto un sacco di duro lavoro e sacrifici. Ma alla fine quel che conta è amare ciò che si fa e per questo ci riteniamo estremamente fortunati.
Sorge spontanea una domanda. Come è lavorare in famiglia, tra due fratelli?
Se non si fosse andati d’accordo tra fratelli sarebbe stata molto dura, invece noi siamo come due migliori amici, quindi diventa tutto estremamente facile. A volte mentre stiamo suonando non abbiamo nemmeno bisogno di parlarci, sappiamo già ciò che l’altro sta pensando, il che è davvero bello.
Cosa significa crescere nel Bronx?
Il Bronx non è sicuramente un posto facile per crescere, ci sono un sacco di gang e molta violenza. Guardandoci indietro, sarebbe potuto andare molto peggio per noi. Per nostra fortuna i nostri genitori ci hanno tenuto lontano da queste brutte situazioni. D’altra parte noi eravamo talmente presi dalla musica, anche quando eravamo giovani, da non venire mai veramente attratti da quelle cose.
Parliamo del vostro percorso di avvicinamento alla musica. Avete iniziato a suonare casa, nei vari gruppi e anche in chiesa. Pensate siano stati anni anche quelli anni importanti per maturare o sono state una semplice parentesi?
Sono stati gli anni più importanti di sicuro. Eravamo in moltissime band quando eravamo più giovani ed i nostri compagni erano sempre molto più vecchi di noi. Era così divertente vedere una band con gente di 30 anni e con due ragazzi ancora molto giovani. Ma questi anni sono stati bellissimi, noi eravamo come spugne che assorbivano qualsiasi cosa, sempre affamati di imparare nuovi strumenti, sempre ad osservare, è stato davvero divertente, bei tempi.
A proposito di crescita…la figura di vostro padre è stata fondamentale per avvicinarvi a questo mondo. Che consigli vi dava durante la vostra crescita? Rispetto ai primi anni, ora che avete questo successo, che vi dice?
Una cosa che ci ripete è che qualunque cosa accada, dipende sempre da me e a mio fratello e di non lasciare mai che qualcuno o qualcosa rompa questo legame. Ha assolutamente ragione e noi ci siamo molto attaccati a questa cosa. Lui vede tutto ciò che sta succedendo, e so che è super orgoglioso di noi, per aver creato questi mostri!! Haha!
Pensate mai al fatto che sia dura confermarsi ad alti livelli, soprattutto in giovane età?
E’ super difficile. Se si confronta la quantità di dj/produttori che ci sono nel mercato di oggi a quella di dieci anni fa, è davvero molto più dura. Tutti vogliono diventare dj ed avere successo. Ma quelli che si distinguono sono quelli che lo fanno per le ragioni giuste, che hanno un vero amore per quello che fanno, quelli che si ritagliano la propria corsia e non seguono solo le tendenze.
Veniamo ora ad alcuni momenti chiave della vostra carriera. Shelter, è il nome del club che vi ha fatto conoscere al grande pubblico. Che significato ha per voi questo club?
Suonare allo “Shelter”, penso sia ancora oggi un grande onore. Quando abbiamo cominciato, eravamo davvero attratti da Timmy come dj, rimanevamo svegli per ascoltarlo alla radio e possiamo dire che lui ha senz’altro influenzato il nostro stile. Riusciva a mixare un disco con l’altro in un modo pazzesco, sembrava quasi che i due dischi suonassero come se stessero parlando tra loro. Quindi, suonare in quel club e sentire lui suonare dopo, è stato veramente sorprendente.
Come vi siete avvicinati a Dennis Ferrer e Jerome Sydenham , due vere icone dell’house? E come siete entrati poi nel roster Objectivity?
Abbiamo effettivamente incontrato Dennis su Myspace (ricordate Myspace? Haha). Un giorno abbiamo inviato un breve messaggio dicendogli quanto noi amavamo la sua musica, non pensando che ci avrebbe risposto, ma lo fece. Passarono un paio di giorni e gli inviammo alcuni mix. Dopodichè ci ha invitati a suonare allo Shelter, da allora abbiamo costruito un rapporto con lui, ha iniziato a insegnare a noi come produrre musica, come utilizzare i programmi, le attrezzature e tutto ciò che ruotava intorno a questo mondo. E’ veramente il nostro mentore! Jerome lo abbiamo conosciuto tramite Dennis e abbiamo imparato tanto anche da lui. E’ davvero una persona incredibile, sa tanto di musica, ci fa da mentore in tanti modi e non lo sa nemmeno!
Quello che sorprende è che avete già girato gran parte del mondo. Avrete modo anche di essere ospiti al Cavo Paradiso di Mykonos, uno dei club più prestigiosi in Europa, specie nella stagione estiva. Siete entusiasti di questa cosa?
E’ una vera benedizione riuscire a fare quello che facciamo, viaggiare in tutto il mondo, soprattutto alla nostra età; è qualcosa che noi non diamo mai per scontato. A volte entrambi ci guardiamo e non possiamo credere di essere davvero nei paesi nei quali ci troviamo. E’ pazzesco!
Le vostre esibizioni sono uno spettacolo vero e proprio. Non siete mai fermi, siete sempre iperattivi e in movimento. Pensate sia un altro modo per trasmettere le sensazioni di una traccia?
Per noi la cosa importante è essere coinvolti e sentire il set. Quando si mostrano le emozioni, anche la folla riesce a coglierle e ciò si verifica quando diventa davvero una festa. Soprattutto nell’era del djing digitale, è molto facile rimanere bloccati con il computer portatile e dimenticare effettivamente di divertirsi mostrandolo al pubblico. Per noi rappresenta una parte molto importante di ciò che facciamo ed è qualcosa che ci viene veramente naturale.
Siete tra i testimonial del nuovo Traktor, ormai quasi un elemento indispensabile per alcuni dj. Cosa può dare di più rispetto alla semplice esibizione con vinile?
Ci sono molte più possibilità con Traktor, in particolare la nuova versione appena uscita con tutti quei decks per i samples e per le altre cose, è come avere un software per DJ’ing e Ableton tutto in un unico prodotto. Si può inserire un loop al volo, giocare con le tracce e creare davvero qualcosa di totalmente nuovo, il che è molto figo, si è in grado di creare la propria identità e riprodurre musica sempre differente. Niente batte la sensazione di riproduzione di un vinile o un cd, ma i tempi stanno cambiando e noi stiamo pienamente accogliendo questo cambiamento!
Tra una data e l’altra, cosa dobbiamo aspettarci da voi in uscita?
Abbiamo appena finito un EP che ora è anche in vendita, ha un vibe tipico della old school ed è molto più musicale rispetto a quanto abbiamo fatto in passato… e sì, siamo sempre al lavoro, abbiamo appena finito alcuni bootleg che saranno presto rilasciati su qualche label, quindi c’è abbastanza roba nostra da tener d’occhio.
Quali secondo voi, sono o saranno le hit del 2011?
Le hit del 2011 per noi sono le hit mancate uscite negli anni 90! Haha, è divertente come tracce che nessuno ha mai suonato in quel periodo, ora sono bombe!
Che vi sentite di consigliare ai giovani che come voi vogliono trasformare questa passione in un vero e proprio lavoro?
Assicurarsi che lo si fa per le giuste ragioni, di avere una reale passione per la musica e non farlo solo per il desiderio di ottenere fama, ragazze e tutte le cose che possono derivare da questo. Si basa tutto ed esclusivamente sulla musica. Se queste cose ci sono poi bisogna dare il 100% sempre, approfondire le conoscenze musicali, fare il proprio lavoro, conoscere da dove proviene la musica che piace e non mollare mai!!!

The Martinez Brothers realized their dream immediately, creating a perfect alchemy supported by thousands of fans through a fresh sound and inevitably sound related to the essence of American House music. The thing that immediately catches your eye is your young age. Many artists have to wait several years before performing in the best clubs, for you the success came very early. Do you feel lucky for that?
I think that it was really cool that we broke into the market really early, but in the same breath, it definetly wasnt easy and took alot of hard work and sacrifices. But in the end we love what we do and feel extremely lucky and blessed that we’re able to do what we love.
A classic question for you. How is working in family, between two brothers?
If you dont like your brother then i could imagine it being very difficult, but for us, we’re like best friends, so it extremely easy. Sometimes while we’re playing we dont even have to talk to one another, we know what the other is thinking, its really cool
What does it mean growing in Bronx?
The Bronx is definitely no easy place to grow up; a lot of gangs and violence that goes on there. But looking back at it now, it definitely could have been a lot worse. Our parents definitely kept us away from alot of the negativity that goes on there. And we were always so caught up in music, even when we were young that we never really were attracted to any of that stuff anyway.
Let’s talk about your way of approaching music. You started to play at home, in the various groups and even in church. Do you consider also those years important years for your musical growth?
They were the most important years for sure. We were in so many bands when we were younger, and our bandmates were always so much older than us it was so funny to see a band of 30 year olds with two kids not even in their teens yet. but those years were so cool because we were like sponges just soaking up everything, always hungry to learn new instruments, always observing, it was really fun, good times.
Always talking about your growth…your father was critical to approach this world. What advice did he give during your growth? Now what does he say after your success?
One thing he always said is that no matter what happens, its always you and your brother, and never to let a anyone or anything break that up. Thats the most important thing, and he’s absolutely right and we’ve stuck with that ever since. He see’s everything thats going on, and i know he’s super proud of us, he created this monster haha
Do you ever think that is hard to confirm as a top dj, especially at a young age?
Its super difficult. If u compare the amount of dj/producers that u have in todays market to something like 10 years ago, its so much more. Everybody wants to be a dj and have all the hype. But the ones that set themselves apart are the ones who do it for the right reasons, and have a true love for it and carve their own lane, not just follow trends.
We come now to some key moments in your career. “Shelter”, is the name of the club who has made you popular to all people. What does it mean for you this club and those moments?
To play at the Shelter, i think ‘til this day is still an honor and a highlight. When we first got started, we were really into Timmy as a dj, we used to stay up a listen to him on the radio, and he really influenced our playing style. He used to layer the records on top of records alot, and make two records sound like they were talking to eachother, it was crazy. So to play that room, and then to hear him play after was really amazing.
How did you meet Dennis Ferrer and Jerome Sydenham, two true house icons? How do you enter in Objectivity roster?
We actually met Dennis on Myspace (remember myspace ?? haha) We sent him one day just a quick message teling him how much we loved his music, not thinking he would write back to us, but he did. A couple of days passed and we sent him some mixes, and he invited us to play at shelter; from then on we built a relationship with him, he started teaching us how to produce music, how to use the programs, the equipment and just teaching us about the whole club “game”. He really mentored us! Jerome we met through Dennis, and we’ve learned so much from him as well, he’s such a an amazing person and knows so much about music, he’s mentored us in so many ways as well and doesnt even know it!
What is surprising is that you have already played all over the world. You will also be guests at Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos, one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe, especially during the summer season. Are you excited about this thing?
Its a real blessing that we get to do what we do, and travel all over the world, especially at our age; its something that we dont ever take for granted. Sometimes we look at eachother, and can’t believe that we’re actually in the countries that we’re in, its crazy!
Seeing your set is a real show. You never stop, you are always hyper and moving. Do you think it’s another way to convey the feelings of a track?
For us its important to really get into our sets and feel the set, and when you show that emotion, the crowd gets into it as well, and thats when it really becomes a party. Especially in today’s age of digital dj’ing, its very easy to get stuck in the laptop and forget to actually have a good time and show the crowd a good time, its a very important part of what we do and something that comes really natural to us.
You are one of the testimonials of the new Traktor Scratch, almost an essential element for some of international DJs. What can give more than just performance with only vinyl?
There’s so much more possibilities with Traktor, especially the new one that just came out with all the sample decks and stuff, its like dj’ing and ableton in one. you can throw in loops on the fly, play with tracks and really create something totally new, which is cool too because thats when you create your own identity as far as playing the music differently than everyone else. Nothing beats the feeling of playing wax and cd’s, but times are changing and we embrace the change fully!
Talking about your next releases, what can we expect from you in the next future?
We just finished an EP that we’re actually shopping now, it has an old school vibe and is alot more musical than our past stuff…and yea we’re always working, we have some bootlegs that we’ve just finished as well that we’ll be white labeling pretty soon, so there’s definitely stuff to look out for.
What do you think are or will be the hits of summer 2011?
The hits for us in 2011 have been the misses that came out in the 90’s haha its funny how tracks that never got any play in those days, now are bombs!
What do you recommend to young djs like you who want to turn this passion into a real job?
Make sure that you are in it for the right reasons, that you have a passion for music and dont just want to get fame and girls and all the stuff that can come with it, its about the music first and foremost. If that is the case, give it 100% ALWAYS, always dig for music, do your homework, know where the music you like today came from, and NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
