Forse sarà troppo egocentrico, non avrà un buon carattere e vestirà uno stile un tantino eccentrico, ma una cosa è certa: il piccolo genio, il ragazzo prodigio è tornato con un album inedito che ha già avuto un grande successo di critica ed un ottimo riscontro a livello pubblico. Dusty Kid, con le sue “dosi” di tracce, è in grado di “drogare” il pubblico (in crisi d’astinenza) verso una realtà sconosciuta “Beyond That Hill”, “al di là di quella collina”, appunto. Si tratta d’un viaggio verso un qualcosa di misterioso, inesplorato ed imprevedibile, che solo l’ascoltatore, conscio del rischio che corre, può intraprendere, costruendosi un percorso immaginario che ha come destinazione il proprio arricchimento globale. Il messaggio di Dusty Kid è chiaro: c’è da rilevare la forza della musica e del suo linguaggio, un codice che suggestiona e condiziona la psiche umana e sociale, un potere capace di esaltare le caratteristiche dell’ascoltatore e di portarlo in una condizione di piacere e benessere.
Il nome Dusty Kid è stato coniato in un periodo della tua vita in cui collaboravi con Stefano Noferini; ci spieghi, precisamente, il motivo della scelta di tale nome? Cosa è accaduto?
Dusty Kid per me vuole ricordare un pò il nome di quei bambini tutti sporchi e poverelli del far west che erano soliti pulire gli stivali dei cowboys.
Non tutti sono a conoscenza delle tue spiccate doti musicali, visibili fin dai tempi della tua giovinezza: dagli eccellenti risultati al conservatorio, alla straordinaria abilità nel suonare il violino e il pianoforte. Cosa ti ha spinto verso il mondo dell’elettronica?
Durante il periodo del conservatorio ricordo che il mio sogno era diventare concertista, così mi feci regalare un sequencer/expander che mi permettesse di registrare le parti orchestrali dei concerti per pianoforte dei grandi classici e romantici, Mozart, Chopin, etc. così che potessi suonarci poi sopra le parti del solista. La sorte ha voluto che questo sequencer includesse nel suo parco suoni anche i kit delle drum maschines TR808 e TR909… Da lì poi è avvenuto tutto abbastanza velocemente!
Nel 2004 la creazione di Duoteque con Andrea Ferlin: EP, numerose tracce apprezzate da djs di fama internazionale come Magda e Richie Hawtin. Perché abbandonare il progetto e decidere di tornare a lavorare da solo?
Il progetto non è stato abbandonato, ma solo messo da parte per un pò perché volevo fare delle cose da solo, e in verità, a parte Andrea e Marascia, non sono molto aperto o entusiasta a collaborazioni, mi piace che quello che l’ascoltatore senta sia l’esatto risultato di quello che ho concepito io in testa, senza che passi per le mani di altri.
Quanto è cambiato Dusty Kid dai tempi in cui produceva tracce eccentriche ed appariscenti come “The Cat”? Si tratta perlopiù di maturazione musicale o di scelte musicali differenti?
The Cat, The Cat… Quel disco vide la luce nel lontano 2003 e solo nel 2006 qualcuno decise di firmarlo per un etichetta, anno in cui le sonorità che mi appassionavano di più erano ben lontane dal quel sound electro.
“Beyond That Hill”, il nuovo album in uscita il 7 novembre. Il titolo è già intrigante di per sé. Vuoi parlarci di questo tuo ultimo lavoro?
“Beyond That Hill” è una sorta di prosecuzione del mio precedente album A Raver’s Diary, visto però da un punto di vista un pò più ermetico e privato: il titolo sta proprio ad indicare un posto, oltre la collina, dove vorrei attirare l’ascoltatore, perché veda con la sua immaginazione e la sua interpretazione tutto ciò che di magico e ancestrale possa succedere lasciandosi trasportare dalla musica, che di per sè è già un pò magia: la musica puoi ascoltarla ma non puoi vederla nè toccarla, non è un quadro o un monumento, non è un azione, è qualcosa di incredibilmente astratto se ci pensi ma ha un potere enorme, in certi casi può anche cambiare le persone. Non ho certo questa pretesa, vorrei solo che l ascoltatore si lasci andare e si immerga in un mondo oltre quella collina, dove tutto può succedere.
Sei un giramondo: vai spesso in Francia, sei stato in Brasile, conosci gli Usa e il Canada. Oltre a gustarti qualche seadas e a sorseggiare del mirto fresco, hai mai fatto qualche esibizione di rilievo nella tua magnifica Sardegna?
L’anno scorso ho fatto un piccolo concerto in un posto dove solitamente si fanno mostre ed esibizioni, con una dimensione un pò più live del mio solito stetup laptop-controller: mi son portato dietro diverse macchine tra cui Jupiters, Minimoogs etc, e in più hanno partecipato alla performance anche mio fratello con le chitarre e Laura Mura con delle parti vocali. E’ stato molto divertente, e sul finale ho cantato anche io.
Visionando la tua official page in Facebook, appaiono curiosamente, tra le tue influenze musicali, gruppi come i The Beatles, Pink Floyd o artisti come Simon & Garfunkel e Madonna. Le tue tracce sono, in qualche modo, impregnate di questi colossi musicali?
Non ho alcuna pagina ufficiale Facebook, ho solo un sito www.dustykid.it che per ora è underconstruction: ne approfitto per dirlo perché tanta gente è convinta che io scriva un sacco di amenità sulle pagine dei fan su Facebook e altrove, ma non è così, non ho alcuna pagina pubblica, non uso Twitter non uso Facebook, non uso più Myspace o Soundcloud, niente di niente!
Per tornare alla tua domanda, la risposta è si: tutti quei nomi hanno e continuano a influenzare quello che faccio, in maniera anche piuttosto considerevole!
Uno dei tuoi collaboratori mi ha messo in guardia dicendomi di non porti quesiti che avrebbero potuto, in qualche modo, irritarti o infastidirti; ritieni essere un ragazzo permaloso o hai cattivi rapporti con il mondo dei media?
Mi son ripromesso di non rilasciare mai più interviste se dovesse succedere di nuovo che un giornalista non riporti pedissequamente quanto io ho detto in sede di intervista, ma lo reinterpreti dicendo cose che io non ho detto, o travisandole in qualche modo… E comunque in fondo il mio mestiere è far musica.

Dusty Kid, with his tracks “dose”, is able to “drug” the public to an unknown place, “beyond that hill”. This process is a journey towards something mysterious, uncharted and unpredictable, that only the listener, aware of the risk he run, can undertake, building an imaginary path that targets his overall enrichment. Dusty Kid’s message is clear: you have to detect the power of music and its language, a code that impresses and influences the human and social psyche, a power able of enhancing the feelings of the listener and bring him to a condition of pleasure.

“Dusty Kid” was coined at a time of your collaboration with Stefano Noferini. Could you explain why do you choose this name? What happened?
“Dusty kid” wants to remember all those poor little children who lived in the Far West and who used to clean the boots of the cowboys.
Not everyone is aware of your remarkable musical skills, visible since your youth: just think about you excellent results at the conservatory or the extraordinary ability to play the violin and the piano. What led you to the electronic music world?
When I was in the conservatory, my dream was to become a performer, so I took a sequencer/expander that allowed me to record the orchestral parts of great classical and romantic piano concertos of Mozart, Chopin, etc.. so I could then play the soloist parts. This sequencer included also TR 808 and TR909 drum kit sounds. So, from there, everything happened quite fast.
2004: the year of the birth of Duoteque project with Andrea Ferlin: several eps supported by international DJs such as Magda and Richie Hawtin. Why the decision to give up the project and to work alone again?
I don’t give up this project. It’s only in stand-by for a while because I want to do some music alone, and indeed, apart from Andre and Marascia, I am not very excited about collaborations. I only want that what listener feels is the exact outcome of what I had in my head, without passing through the hands of other people.
What has changed since the days when Dusty Kid released “The Cat”? If you have to think about it now. Was it a part of your musical growth or it different music choices of the time?
The Cat, The Cat… That record saw the light back in 2003, but only in 2006 someone decides to release it. At that moment, the sounds I really liked were really far from that electro sound.
Beyond That Hill, the new album coming out November 7. The title is intriguing in itself. Do you want to talk us about it?
Beyond That Hill is a sort of follow-up of my previous album A Raver’s Diary, but seen from a little more obscure and private point of view: the title is just to indicate a place, over the hill, where I draw the attention of the listener, so he can see with his own imagination and interpretation what magic things could happen, simply drifting from the music, which is already a little magic: you can listen to music but you can not see it or touch it, is not a painting or a monument, not an action, it is something incredibly abstract, but, if you think, it has an enormous power, in some cases it may also change people. Of course, I have not this claim, I just wish the listener to let go into the world beyond the hill, where everything could happen.
You are a “globetrotter”: you often play in France, you played in Brazil, U.S. and Canada. Have you ever the chance to play in a great event in Sardinia?
Last year I did a little concert in a place where there are usually shows and exhibitions, with a little more live size of my usual laptop setup-controller: I brought several machines including Jupiters, Minimoogs etc.. I played also with my brother (the guitar) and Laura Walls (vocal). It was very funny, and at the end I sang too.
In your official Facebook page, we see, among your musical influences, bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkel and Madonna. Are your tracks somehow influenced by these musical giants?
I have no official Facebook page, I only have one site that is now underconstruction: www.dustykid.it. I take this opportunity to say it, because so many people think that I write a lot of amenities in that page, but it is not well, I do not have any public page, I do not use Twitter, do not use Facebook, Myspace, or SoundCloud, nothing! To reply your question, the answer is yes: all that names have and continue to influence what I do!
One of your co-workers warned me telling me not to bring questions you might have, somehow, be angry or annoyed. Do you think to be a touchy guy or do you have a good relation with the media world?
I promised myself to not do any interviews, if it happens again that a reporter does not report what I said in the interview, but he reinterprets saying things that I did not say, or overlap them in some way… Anyway, my job is to make music.
