Paladino e cultore di disco e house, promotore di serate come Black Disco Buts, San è attivo sulla scena da più di 15 anni. Nel suo curriculum release su label come Perlon, Rush Hour e Dekmantel.

Tutto bene. La musica mi tiene in movimento…
Come ti presenteresti a chi non ti conosce?
Salve. Vorrei presentarvi un mio amico. Il suo nome è San Proper, e viene da Amsterdam. Adora produrre musica, esibirsi e suonare i suoi dischi.
Hai iniziato il tuo percorso musicale suonando in band. C’è stato un artista o un album in particolare che ti ha avvicinato all’elettronica?
Niente di specifico. Nelle prime tracce ska e funk utilizzavo l’Atari di mio fratello e una tastiera Yamaha per il basso e per la batteria. Credo si possa dire che tutto partì da lì. Tuttora integro software e computer con la mia voce e sample di strumenti a percussione che suono in studio, insieme a parti di basso e chitarra. Mi piace che il suono sia omogeneo, sporco e ultimamente ho registrato molti sample vocali. Nel mio nuovo album “Animal”, in uscita su Rush Hour, sentirete questa combinazione in ogni traccia.
Com’è nata la serie Proper’s A’dam Family?
In quel periodo stavo lavorando con diversi produttori di Amsterdam, è stata un’esperienza che mi ha insegnato molto. Decisi che per il mio debutto sarei uscito con una serie di collaborazioni, e Rush Hour rispose positivamente. Adoro anche la parte grafica! Un giorno, anche le ultime 5 parti saranno pubblicate…
Fatta eccezione per i due EP su Perlon, praticamente tutte le tue release sono state pubblicate da etichette olandesi. C’è un motivo particolare?
In realtà no. Ovviamente supporto la scena di Amsterdam, ma ho fatto remixes per etichette come Bosconi, Hold Youth, Circus Company e se ne aggiungeranno altre in futuro.
Hai sempre lavorato per promuovere la Disco. Prima, nel 1999, con le serate Black Disco Bust, ora con quelle Italo Elite. Da dove nasce questo tuo amore per il genere?
La disco è la madre della musica house, non si può apprezzare la figlia senza passare per la madre…
Parlaci dei tuoi monikers.
Stepmother è un progetto che avevo in passato, mai pubblicato. I miei dj set in quel periodo ruotavano attorno alla dub e al raggae. A volte suono ancora così, e, quando succede, lascio uscire lo Stepmother che c’è in me. Al momento invece sto lavorando ad un progetto che si chiama Dirt Machine. E’ un lavoro che sto facendo insieme a Tom Trago, proponiamo un mix di new wave, rock e disco.
Mi sembra di aver capito che continui ad acquistare dischi. Qual è il tuo parere sui formati digitali?
Si, sento la necessità di acquistare vinili e anche quella di promuoverli. Voglio che la mia musica esca in vinile. Al di là di questo, è un discorso di abitudini. Ogni persona sceglie il formato che preferisce, io lavoro con il vinile.

For those who don’t know you, could you please introduce yourself?
Hi. I’d like you to meet a friend. His name is San Proper, he’s from Amsterdam and loves producing music, performing and making party with his records.
You began your music adventure playing in bands. Was there an artist or album in particular that influenced you into taking the electronic route?
Not specifically. When i recorded my first ska & funk-tracks I’d simulate the bass and beats with my brother’s Atari and a simple Yamaha-keyboard, that’s where it erupted, i guess, but i still fuse electronics with my voice and percussive instruments in my studio, alongside the bassguitars and other strings… I like an organic, filthy sound and lately I’ve been singing a lot. On my new upcoming album entitled ‘Animal’ you’ll hear this combination on every track.
How did the Proper’s A’dam Family Series come out?
At the time i was jamming a lot with many different producers here in Amsterdam, it taught me a lot. Then I decided I wanted to do my debut as collaboration-series. Rush Hour responded. I love the artwork too. One day, the last 5 parts will be released…
Apart from the two EPs on Perlon, all your releases have been on dutch labels. Is there any special reason?
No, not really, but of course I support the Amsterdam music-culture and visa versa, but I’ve also did remixes for Bosconi, Hold Youth, Circus Company and more to come…
Flaws and all, you’ve been always pushing Disco-music. First you founded the Black Disco Bust, back in 1999, now you’ve started “Italo Elite”, an Italo disco night. Where does your love for the genre come from?
Disco is the mother of House-music. I like to date both mother & daughter…
You also have different monikers, tell us about it?
Stepmother is a dub-project i did which was never released, but i when i started out with dj-sets I’d play mostly dub, roots reggae… and when I play like that today I sometimes bring out the stepmother in me.
The Dirt Machine is a project I’m doing with Tom Trago and this is all about the songs, about the fusion of Wave, Rock, Disco… live-music.
I get you’re a regular record shopper. How do you feel about digital formats?
Yes, I feel the need to play vinyl and promote that, because I want my music to be released on vinyl too. Besides, it’s culture. Every man has his own tools, I work with vinyls.
From the Ten Commandments of the Sarcastic Disco Decalogue Dj Harvey – VI – Selection will always trump the mix. Do you agree?
Dj Harvey is great.
