Fratelli, nati e cresciuti a Stoccarda, Alexander ‘Ali’ (il maggiore) e Sebastian ‘Basti’ (il minore) Schwarz sono noti con il nome di Tiefschwarz. Un nome che tradotto significa ‘Deep Black’ che rappresenta appieno il loro suono, profondo ed oscuro. Da 15 anni sono sul palcoscenico internazionale e hanno firmato innumerevoli remix (non saprei nemmeno quali citarvi) e tre album, senza contare le compilation ed i remix. Nel 2006 hanno fondato la propria etichetta Souvenir Music allo scopo di andare ancora più a fondo e trasmettere all’ascoltatore qualcosa di più intimo, un ricordo, come fosse un souvenir. Abbiamo cercato di ripercorrere con loro questi anni e di far luce su quello che hanno in mente. Si sconsiglia una lettura silenziosa… il sottofondo ce lo siamo fatti suggerire direttamente da loro.
Prima di partire con l’intervista vera e propria, potete consigliarci una traccia o un album da accompagnare alla lettura?
Vediamo… che ne dite di Goo dei Sonic Youth?
Parliamo un po’ del passato: come avete trovato la via verso la musica elettronica? Chi dei due ha influenzato l’altro? Cosa ne pensavano i vostri genitori della vostra scelta di vita?
Ho iniziato (è Ali a parlare) ad uscire a metà degli anni ’80 e quindi son stato influenzato dalla scena musicale New Wave che a quel tempo era già molto legata alla musica elettronica in generale. Inoltre avevamo un amico che era un grandissimo nerd in fatto di musica e che ci ha fatto avvicinare molto alla disco, all’elettronica dei primi tempi, ai suoni proto-house ed ai suoni elettro-funk. In quanto mio fratello è un po’ più giovane, era lui che mi seguiva nella vita notturna nei primi anni ’90 ma una volta che abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme abbiamo iniziato ad influenzarci a vicenda. I nostri genitori hanno sempre amato divertirsi ed uscire e quindi sono sempre stati grandi nostri fan ed hanno decisamente supportato il nostro stile di vita
Com’è lavorare in famiglia? Come vi suddividete il lavoro (es. chi si occupa più dell’etichetta Souvenir Music, chi più delle produzioni)? Chi dei due ama più fare festa?
Entrambi amiamo lavorare in studio producendo musica assieme, Basti è un po’ più incentrato sul lavoro in studio ed io un po’ più sull’etichetta. Ci piace ad entrambi fare festa – credo dipenda dal mood e dall’andamento dei vari giorni più che da a chi piaccia più far festa!
Stoccarda, la vostra città natale, è una città molto industriale (la patria dell’automobile), la si potrebbe paragonare in un certo senso a Detroit (correggetemi se sbaglio). Come è la scena musicale in città?
È vero che Stoccarda è una città piuttosto industriale, ma oltre che al fatto che ci costruiscono auto è praticamente l’opposto di Detroit poiché si trova in una zona molto ricca della Germania! Per quanto riguarda la scena musicale attuale, non sono molto in contatto poiché abbiamo avuto base a Berlino negli ultimi dieci anni.
‘Deep Black’ (traduzione di Tiefschwarz in inglese): siete stati i portavoce della deep house in Germania ormai da 15 anni, genere che è forse più attuale in questi anni che mai. Che ne pensate?
É vero, la deep-house ha avuto una rinascita, ma sono state la house e la techno in tutte le loro forme che recentemente sono diventate decisamente popolari, il che è ottimo e siamo veramente contenti di continuare a fare parte di quello stesso movimento così tanti anni dopo.
Un riassunto di questi anni: come si è evoluto il vostro suono nel corso degli anni, dal primo album “Ral 9005″ passando per l’acclamato “Eat Book” fino a “Chocolate”?
Abbiamo sempre cercato di non essere noiosi con la nostra musica, quindi ci siamo preoccupati molto dell’evoluzione del nostro suono. Se si ascoltano i tre album si può sicuramente sentire una transizione, ma alla fine la base rimane house, per la pista, solo qualche volta diventa più profonda, altre più dura e irritante. É altrettanto interessante dal punto di vista della registrazione dei suoni lavorare anche coi vocal così come con pure sonorità elettro.
Souvenir Music. Ho visto del vostro progetto Souvenir Plus, fin dove avete intenzione di spingervi nella sperimentazione? Che obiettivi avete in mente?
Beh, Souvenir Plus è la nostra piattaforma digitale che ci dà la libertà e la flessibilità di rilasciare cose più velocemente al fine di avviare nuovi talenti. Inoltre, con la solo Souvenir ci sarebbe voluto troppo tempo per mettere in circolazione tutte le tracce che vogliamo rilasciare al fine di mantenere un certo rendimento.
Riprendendo le vostre parole: “We like the idea of seeing music as a souvenir, an impression you take from somewhere. Something intimate that you remember”. Cosa cercate di trasmettere/donare al pubblico durante i vostri set?
Sta per portare la folla e noi stessi come dj in un viaggio musicale nel nostro sound. Non c’è molto altro da dire tranne che è per creare una connessione tra noi e la folla.
Con l’arrivo di Philipp Meier aka Santè siete diventati un trio, come si sviluppa ora il vostro dj/live set?
Il trio è stato appositamente creato per la produzione ed il live tour dell’album Chocolate così si è svolto il tutto. Philipp è ancora un membro della famiglia Souvenir, ma ha anche intrapreso la propria strada artistica con la propria etichetta.
Programmi per quest’estate? Avete in cantiere qualche nuovo remix o EP?
Abbiamo appena terminato un nuovo singolo ‘No Message’ che uscirà su Souvenir a luglio, una re-release di ‘Hurricane’, così come i remix per Terranova su Kompakt, Smash TV su Get Physical e Dapayj. Su Souvenir, ci stiamo concentrando sul sampler estivo ‘In The City vol.2’ che presenta molte nuove produzioni che saranno seguite dal un nuovo singolo di Re.You, Marco Freivogel degli Exercise One etc. etc. Per quanto riguarda i party, abbiamo un enorme evento al Sonar (il 19 giugno) in un magazzino ristrutturato con un sacco di artisti della Souvenir tra cui Re.You, Rampa, Noir e Cassy come special guest. Inoltre, come Souvenir, abbiamo la nostra residenza regolare al Watergate.

Brothers, born and raised in Stuttgart, Alexander ‘Ali’ (the older) and Sebastian ‘Basti’ (the younger) Schwarz are known under the name of Tiefschwarz. Name that means ‘Deep Black’ which represents their full sound, deep and dark. From 15 years they are on the international stage and have signed countless remixes (I don’t even know which quote to you) and three albums, without counting compilations and remix albums. In 2006 they founded their own label Souvenir Music in order to go even deeper and transmit to the listener something more intimate, a memory, as a souvenir. We tried to go over these years with them and shed light on what they have in mind. We don’t recommend a silent reading… the soundtrack is directly suggested by them.
Before starting the real interview, can you recommend us a track or an album in order to accompany the reading?

Back in the days: how have you found the way to electronic music? Which of the two has influenced the other? What do your parents thought about your lifestyle choice?
I started going out in the mid-80s so I was influenced by the New Wave scene back in the days which was already very much connected to electronic music in general. Besides that we had a friend who was a huge music nerd and he brought us closer to a lot of disco, early electro, proto-house sounds and electronic funk sounds. As my brother is a bit younger, he was the one following me into the nightlife in the early 90s but once we started working together we both began influencing each other. Our parents always loved partying and going out so they were always our biggest fans so they definitely supported our lifestyle.
How is working in family? How do you split the job (ex. who is more focus on your label Souvenir Music and who is more focus on the productions)? Which of you two like most make party?
We both love working in the studio producing music together, Basti is a bit studio centred and I, a bit more on the label side. We both like to party – it depends on the day to day mood and conditions I guess as to who likes to party more!
Stuttgart, your hometown, is a very industrial city (the birthplace of the car), it could be compared to Detroit in a sense (correct me if I’m wrong). How is the music scene in town?
It’s true Stuttgart is quite an industrial city, but besides the fact that they built cars there, it’s pretty much the opposite of Detroit as its in a very wealthy area of Germany! As for the current music scene, I’m a little out of touch as we’ve been based out of Berlin for the last ten years.
‘Deep Black’: you have been the spokesman of deep house in Germany for 15 years, genre that is perhaps more relevant than ever in these years. What do you think?
True, deep house has had a real revival, but its house and techno in all its forms that has become really popular again recently which is great and we’re very happy to continue being part of that same movement so many years later.
A summary of this years, how has your sound evolved over the years from your first album “Ral 9005” through the acclaimed “Eat Book” to “Chocolate”?
We always tried not to get bored by our own music, so we were very much preoccupied with the evolution of our sound. If you listen to the three albums you can definitely hear a transition but in the end it’s all house based, four to the floor, just sometimes it goes deeper, sometimes harder, techier sounds. It’s also interesting on the sound recording side of things to work with vocals too as well as purer electronic sounds.
Souvenir Music. I saw your project Souvenir Plus, how far are you going to push in the experimentation? What are the objectives that you have in mind?
Well, Souvenirplus is our digital only platform, which gives us the freedom and flexibility to release stuff faster in order to launch newer talents. Also, with only Souvenir it would take too long to turn around all the tracks we want to release in order to maintain a certain output.
Taking your words: ” We like the idea of seeing music as a souvenir, an impression you take from somewhere. Something intimate that you remember”. What are you trying to transmit/donate to public during your set?
It’s taking the crowd and ourselves as the DJs on a musical journey into our sound. There’s not much else to say but that to create a connection between us and the crowd.
With Philipp Meier aka Santè you become a trio, how your dj/live set develops now?
The trio was specially created for the production and the live touring of the Chocolate album so it’s all wrapped up. Philip is still a member of the Souvenir family, but he’s also going his own way as an artist with his own lable, A Votre.
Programs for this summer? Have you some new remixes or EP in construction?
We just finished a new single ‘No Message’ which will be out on Souvenir in July, a re-release of Tiefschwarz’s Hurricane, as well as remixes for Terranova on Kompakt, Smash TV on Get Physical and Dapayk. On Souvenir, we are focusing on the summer sampler ‘In The City vol. 2’ which features a load of new productions followed by a new single from Re.You, Marco Freivogel from Exercise One etc. etc. Partywise, we have a massive Sonar event (June 19) in a converted warehouse with loads of Souvenir artists including Re.You, Rampa, Noir and a very special guest in the form of Cassy! Otherwise, we have our regular Souvenir residency at Watergate too.
