Leggendo su di te mi ha incuriosito il fatto che mentre altri djs sono andati a vivere a Berlino, a Barcellona o a Francoforte per aumentare le loro possibilità e il loro successo mentre tu hai preferito rimanere a nord ad Amburgo.
Beh, il successo in realtà non dipende da dove vivi. L’unica cosa che dipende dalla tua città sono i viaggi e i costi. Amburgo è una città meravigliosa con un’atmosfera veramente particolare e non la cambierei per niente al mondo. La scena musicale è abbastanza vivace qui: bei locali, etichette, artisti; così in caso di necessità ho la possibilità di interagire con persone che hanno una mentalità affine alla mia. Grazie al nostro aeroporto, che è piuttosto grande, ho la possibilità di essere collegato con l’intero pianeta.
Quali sono stati i momenti chiave della tua vita?
Essere in grado di vivere in un sogno – ho sempre voluto far parte della musica e questo è stato un bel risultato. La mia famiglia, la mia ragazza, mio figlio… Sono tutti momenti salienti della mia vita. Sto pensando di avere molto di più in futuro…
Il 6 Luglio è uscito il tuo quarto mixato in live della serie Play!. Sao Paolo/Brazil, Paris/France, Cielo/New York e ora Tasmanian Tiger/Melbourne, in doppio cd e in digitale. Com’è stata concepita l’idea di questi live, dove farli, che tracce scegliere… Racconta tutto.
L’idea è vecchia di 5 anni. Tutto è iniziato con il primo PLAY! che venne registrato a San Paolo e poi pubblicato nel Febbraio del 2007 sulla Confused Recordings (la mia prima label). A quel punto ho avuto tante serate/gigs meravigliosi, così pensai che sarebbe stato grandioso registrare alcune di queste serate speciali. Così è nata l’idea. In generale, prima scelgo la città dove voglio registrare e poi il club dove andare a suonare. Tutte le città che hanno fatto parte della serie significano molto per me e in questo modo cerco di ripagare il mio rispetto per loro e dandogli poi anche il nome a una delle tracce della serie PLAY! EP. Per quanto riguarda le tracce nel mix – è come un live mix, i brani vengono scelti sul momento. Non posso fare un live con una tracklist già preimpostata. Devi essere flessibile e spontaneo.

Non so perché a me dai l’idea di avere una gran quantità di hardware e cavi sparsi per casa, per lo studio; vinili e cassette ovunque…
Non proprio. Voglio dire, ho un sacco di gadgets, strumenti musicali, ma sono tutti nello studio. A casa ho dei buoni speakers, perché l’alta qualità del suono è di estrema importanza per me. Sorpresa, sorpresa!
Come si svolge la tua giornata tipo?
Dipende da quello che ho voglia di fare… Non mi piace avere giornate tipo, ma non sono neanche uno che dorme fino all’ora di pranzo visto che sto sveglio tutto il weekend. Cerco di condurre una vita normale e sana.
Cosa ne pensi di tutti quei producer che tradiscono i loro ideali solo per guadagnare più soldi ed essere più “cool”? Per come la vedo io al giorno d’oggi ci si vende per troppo poco e le vere passioni vengono messe da parte! Questo non è più amore per la musica allora…
Qualunque sia la loro barca galleggia. Siamo tutti liberi e abbiamo differenti aspettative di vita, in modo che tutti devono fare tutto ciò che li rende felici finché non va a scapito di qualcun altro.
Voci di corridoio parlano di alcuni djs che comprano fan sui social network; siti che fanno missaggio e mastering promettendo soldi, donne e fama; battaglie e dispetti tra club e organizzazioni per accaparrarsi gli artisti migliori. Questa è l’altra faccia della musica che in pochi conoscono e che nessuno vorrebbe conoscere..
E’ un business come tutti gli altri. Naturalmente non siamo una grande famiglia felice dove tutti si amano l’un l’altro. In realtà questo non succede mai nella vita reale, tanto meno in una famiglia allargata. Ci sono i conflitti di interessi occasionali, ma di solito gli artisti non possono farci niente e la maggior parte di questi problemi ricadono sui booking agents, le label e i manager. La concorrenza nel business fa sempre bene, mette in condizione di lavorare sodo e gratificare di più il cliente…
Mi scuso per questa piccola parentesi e torniamo a te. Dopo il trionfo di “Paranoia” (Ideal Audio, 2011) e Play! hai già in mente altri progetti?
Come al solito sto lavorando a delle mie produzioni e ho firmato numerose uscite sulla mia etichetta, Ideal Audio. Andre Winter e Sebastian Radlmeier usciranno con un nuovo EP e Electric Rescue con Remain uniranno le loro forze per rilasciare una traccia bomba. Anche il remix è formidabile, che verrà pubblicato a Settembre, ma vorrei tenere un pò di suspense intorno al remixer.
Differenze ed emozioni a confronto tra rave e festa legale.
Li amo entrambi. Ci sono molti meno party illegali al giorno d’oggi, ma ciò che conta per me sono le vibrazioni trasmesse dalla serata. Legale o no, finché siamo tutti al sicuro, in termini di luogo, io mi diverto. E quando il pubblico è anche sensibile non c’è più niente che io possa chiedere!

Reading about you I was intrigued the fact that while other djs are now living in Berlin, in Barcelona or in Frankfurt to increase their ability and their success while you prefer to stay in Hamburg in the north.
Well, success does not really depend on where you live. The only thing affected by your city is the travel time and costs. Hamburg is an amazing city with a really particular vibe, so I would not trade it for anything. The music scene is also quite lively here, great venues, labels, artists, so I have the chance to interact with like minded people whenever needed. Our airport is also quite big, so I am very well connected to the whole planet.
What were the highlights of your life?
Being able to live off of a dream – I always wanted to be in music, so this has been quite an achievement. My family, my girl, my son.. They are all highlights in my life. I am planning on having more though in the future…. Highlights, that is.
On 6 July was released your fourth live mixed of Play! series. Sao Paolo/Brazil, Paris/France, Cielo/New York and now Tasmanian Tiger/Melbourne, 2CD + digital. How was it conceived this idea of these live, where do it, which tracks to choose…Tell us all.
The idea is now more than 5 years old. It all started with the first PLAY! which was recorded in Sao Paulo and then released on Confused Recordings (my first label) in February 2007. I had had so many wonderful nights / gigs at that point, so I thought it would be good to record some of these special nights. That’s how the idea was born. And then generally, first I pick the city where I want to do the recording and then the venue comes into play. All cities that have been part of the series so far mean a lot to me, so in a way I pay my respect to them and also name one of the tracks from the PLAY! EP series after them. Concerning the tracks in the mix – as this is a live mix, the tracks get chosen on the moment. I cannot do a live mix with a preconceived notion of the track listing. You have to be flexible and spontaneous.

I don’t know why, but I guess you have a large amount of hardware and cables scattered around the house, the studio, vinyl and tapes anywhere…
Not really. I mean I have lots of gadgets, musical instruments, equipment, but they are all in the studio. At home I have good speakers, because high quality of the sound is of extreme importance to me. Surprise, surprise!
How does develop your typical day?
Depending on what I want to do… I don’t really like to have typical days. But I am not someone who sleeps in till lunch time every day cause I am up all weekend. I try to lead a normal and healthy life.
What do you think of all those producers who betray their ideals just to earn more money and be more “cool”? As I see it we sell for a bit and the real passions are set aside! Then this is no more love for the music…
Whatever floats their boat. We are all free and have different expectations of life, so everybody shall do whatever makes them happy as long as it is not at the expense of someone else.
Rumors speak about some djs who buy fans on social networks, about websites that make mix and mastering promising money, girls and fame, about battles and spites between clubs and organizations to grab the best artists. This is the other side of the music that few know and no one would want to know…
It is a business like all others. Of course, we are not one big happy family where everybody loves each other. That never happens in real life actually, even in a real extended family. There are the occasional conflicts of interests, but the artists usually can’t do much about it and most of these problems go through the booking agents, label and artist managers anyways. But competition in a business is always healthy, it makes everybody work harder, which in the end is great for the customer…
I apologize for this little digression and get back to you. After the triumph of “Paranoia” (Ideal Audio, 2011) e Play! have you other project in mind?
As usual, I am working on own productions and I have also signed several new releases for my label Ideal Audio. Andre Winter and Sebastian Radlmeier will be back each with a new EP and Electric Rescue teamed up with Remain to deliver a really hot track. The remix is also amazing, but I would like to keep a bit of suspense around the remixer as the release will be out in September.
Differences and emotions compared between rave and legal party.
I love them both. There are less illegal parties nowadays, but what matters to me is the vibe of the gig. Legal or not, as long as we are all safe in terms of the place itself, I enjoy myself. And when the audience is also responsive, there is nothing more I can ask for!
