Spesso da un’intervista di poche domande si riesce a capire molto di più di quello che la semplice risposta vuol dire: le domande sono poche, a dir il vero rientrano nella classica casistica per conoscere meglio l’artista, la musica che fà e come è nata in lui questa passione. Ciò che si legge tra le righe tuttavia è qualcosa di più, di più interessante e che descrive più intimamente chi risponde. Per quanto riguarda i dOP, e da quanto ho potuto capire, a loro piace la vita che fanno (quella del musicista, si capisce), piace divertirsi e piace la città di Berlino perchè permette di realizzare appieno le prime due. Sono francesi, sì, ma come spesso fa la musica, diventano cittadini del mondo, nomadi delle proprie passioni e della propria professione, figli del mondo e non di una città specifica. Le passioni e i desideri emergono nudi e crudi: se non avessero fatto i musicisti? Bhe, semplice: il narcotrafficante senza talento, il politico o il surfista…già da qui si capisce chi sono. Risposte secche, quasi scocciate, sempre oltre gli schemi e sempre sopra le righe. Mai banali insomma. Chi li ha ascoltati, e ancor meglio chi li ha visti, lo sa già. Per chi non li conosce, suggerisco solo di leggere l’articolo e ascoltare almeno qualche loro traccia. Ne vale la pena.
Qual’è stato il vostro primo approccio con la musica? suonavate qualche strumento musicale quand’eravate giovani?
Clement Zemstov: Penso di aver avuto i primi approcci con la musica quando ascoltavo musica con mio padre e la sua collezione di dischi (mio padre non è Jim Savile), ho suonato per un pò i tamburi e ho fatto alcune lezioni di pianoforte…e poi io sono ancora giovane…
Damian Van de Sande: Mi ricordo di essere stato sempre attratto da un pianoforte, è stato intorno ai 4 anni. Cercavo sempre di riprodurre il brano entertainer song. Suonavo ed imparavo la musica dalla mia tenera età, ho poi studiato sassofono a 15 anni. Mi è sempre piaciuto suonare un sacco di strumenti: flauto, clarinetto, tastiere. Ho appena preso un Garmon, una fisarmonica russa: cercherò di combinare qualcosa anche con questa.
Jonathan Illel: Piano per 2 settimane, sassofono per 6 mesi.
Che tipo di musica vi piace ascoltare quando non state lavorando? Se doveste consigliare l’acquisto di un nuovo album, quale sarebbe?
C: Ascoltiamo un sacco di musiche diverse tutti i giorni. Talvolta siamo attratti da un genere particolare per un periodo un po’ più lungo. Recentemente ho riascoltato un sacco di canzoni perché stavamo componendo per l’altra nostra band “Les fils du Calvaire”: ora sono in una specie di stato d’animo pseudo futuro, John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos. Allo stesso modo sento un sacco di musica anche dai miei colleghi e dalla mia sorellina che ha una cultura musicale davvero incredibile.
D: Ascolto ogni tipo di musica: sono sempre alla ricerca di qualcosa di nuovo, in ogni epoca e genere. Mentre sto scrivendo questa intervista, sto ascolto Gut Gundrun, scoperto non molto tempo fa. Youtube è davvero sorprendente per la ricerca.
J: L’ultimo album della band Why? E summer tape di Kanye West.
Se doveste scegliere, qual è il vostro album preferito (uno per ciascuno)?
C: La mia risposta di oggi è: per la copertina: Santana “Abraxas”, per il nome: “Bad” di Michael Jackson, per la musica: The Beatles.
D: Kind of Blue di Miles Davis, una delle ragioni per cui sono musicista.
J: Aphrodite bambino 666 Demis Roussos..
C’è qualche artista a cui vi ispirate? Cosa ispira la vostra musica e cosa cercate di trasmettere con essa?
C: Ho 3 influenze principali: Alan Turing, Karl Lagarfeld, Serge Gainsbourg e Lady S First Brigitte Fontaine. Per quello che sono e per quello che fanno si può aggiungere W.A. Mozart e Robert Moog, Diego Maradona, Carlos Valderrama, Claudio Caniggia, Rene Higuita, Eric Cantona e Yannick Noah naturalmente.
D: Così tanti artisti mi influenzano e mi ispirano John Carpenter, Moodymann, Wayne Shorter, Picasso, l’elenco è troppo lungo…
J: Jim Morisson, Prince, MJ
Come moltissimi altri artisti, anche voi avete fatto di Berlino la vostra città. Cosa credete abbia in più questa città rispetto alle altre (e che fa la differenza) in chi produce musica?
C: Secondo me vivere a Berlino non fa differenze nel produrre musica: potremmo fare musica un po’ ovunque ma di sicuro a Berlino nuoti nella musica elettronica e nella club culture e, riferendomi ad una visione più materiale, è più semplice trovare uno spazio in cui poter fare rumore a Berlino che a Parigi…e più economico.
D: La città ti dà una sensazione in cui vivere risulta facile, ti dà una sensazione di vuoto, di spazio. Una sensazione di libertà. La gente arriva a comportarsi bene qui ed è bello, anche la vita è più conveniente: questo ti permette di concentrarti su altre cose.
J: Mi sono trasferito in questo periodo a Berlino solo perché gli altri lo hanno fatto. Preferisco Parigi.
Durante la vostra carriera di gruppo, qual’è la cosa più bella che vi è capitata e quale la peggiore? C’è qualche avventura che vi và di raccontarci?
C: Devo forse raccontare di nuovo la storia di quando ho perso il mio **** al Bar 25? È stata la mia peggiore. La migliore è quella di vivere questa vita di tutti i giorni.
D: Probabilmente quando stavo per perdere un occhio in Ingolstatd in Germania. Dopo abbiamo fatto il barmitzva, ho dormito con un occhio aperto, e quando mi sono svegliato ero davvero spaventato. La migliore è che abbiamo suonato in Ucraina e li ho incontrato mia moglie!
J: Ciò che succede sulla strada rimane sulla strada…è per questo che amo il nostro lavoro.
Voce, synth e percussioni. Ci sarà mai spazio per un quarto uomo? Progetti per il futuro? Con chi vi piacerebbe collaborare?
C: Non abbiamo limiti in termini di collaborazioni: personalmente mi piacerebbe un giorno fare un disco in Louisiana (Stati Uniti) e lavorare con alcuni artisti bayou, cantando in un francese di 400 anni, c’è un straordinario mix di culture, dagli indiani nativi, mescolate con ritmi caraibici, con moderni stili Nola di band jazz e di marcia. Mi piacerebbe collaborare con Lil Wayne.
D: Abbiamo collaborato con così tante persone, e così sarà per il futuro. La musica è fatta per essere condivisa. Mi piacerebbe tornare a Mali e fare un po’ di musica con la gente del posto ancora una volta. E’ un posto meraviglioso, dove si possono sentire le radici del blues…
J: Al momento Micky Blanco, Santigold e Mr. Oizo.
Per finire, una domanda classica: se non aveste fatto i musicisti, quale altro lavoro avreste fatto? Avete qualche altra passione oltre alla musica che vi piacerebbe coltivare?
C: Penso che sarei diventato un trafficante di droga non di talento…o ho lavorerei al bar a Salon Zur Wilde Renate, Berlin Beach.
D: Forse un po’ di politica!
J: Nel buisness delle scarpe, della ristorazione e della club-culture, o un bar sulla spiaggia, il surfista, o avrei lavorato al burger shop.

Often from an interview with few questions, you can understand much more than the simple answer is to say: the questions are few, the classic series to learn more about the artists, the music they makes and how they have started this passion. What we read between the lines, however, is something more, more interesting and more intimately. With regard to the PDO, and from what I could understand, they like the life they do (that of musician, of course), they like to have fun and enjoy the city of Berlin because it allows to fully realize the first two. They are French, yes, but like often does the music, become citizens of the world, nomads of their passions and their profession, children of the world and not to a specific city. Passions and desires emerge naked and raw: if they did not the musicians? Well, simple: either the drug trafficker (without talent), or the politician or the surfer… you can see already who they are. Replies hard, almost peeved, always over the patterns and always over the top. Never trivial fact. Who listened to them, and even better who has seen them, already know that. For those who do not know them, I suggest just reading the article and listen to at least some of their track. It’s worth it.
What was your first encounter with the music? Did you play any instrument when you were young?
C: I think i got familiar with music listening with my dad and his records collection (my dad isn’t Jim Savile) then i also practiced drums fora while and some piano bases…and I’m still young.
D: I remember to be attracted to a piano, around 4.I was triying to replay the entertainer song. i play and learn music since my tender age i studied saxophone 15 years.I like to play naively with lot of instruments, flute, clarinette, keys.I just get a garmon, a russian accordeon, gonna try to make soemthing with it.
J: Piano for 2 weeks, saxophone for 6 month.
What kind of music do you like to listen to when you’re not working? If you were to advise the purchase of a new album, what would it be?
C: We listen a lot of different musics every days. Swell sometimes you can be attracted with a special genre for a longer period. Recently I re listened a lot of songs because we were composing for our other band “Les fils du calvaire” and now I’m really on a spacy pseudo future discovering mood John Carpenter, wendy carlos I’m asweel feed a lot by my too collegues and my little sister with have an incredible musical culture…
D: I’m listening all types of music, i’m digging non stop, in every genres, epoques. While i’m writing this interview, i’m listening Gundrun Gut, just dicovered her not long time ago. Youtube is so amazing for diggin’.
J: The last album of the band Why? And the summer tape of Kanye West.
If you had to choose, what is your favorite album (one for each)?
C: My answer of today is: for the cover Santana “Abraxas”, for the name “Bad” Michael Jackson, for the music: The Beatles.

Like many other artists, you have moved to Berlin. What this city has more than the others (and that makes the difference) for those who produce music?
C: In my eyes living in berlin doesn’t make differences to produce music, we could do music a bit anywhere but for sure in Berlin, u swim in electronic music and club culture, and on a more material view, it’s way more easy to find space to make noise in berlin than in paris…and cheaper.
D: The city has a very easy-living mood, a feeling of emptyness, of space. A feeling of freedom. People get to behave nice there. And yes, also the life is cheaper, u can focus on other things.
J: I moved to this city half time only because the other did. I prefer Paris.
During your career as a group, what is the best thing that has happened to you and what is the worse? There is some adventure that you can share?
C: Should i really tell again the story when i lost my **** in bar 25? It was my worst the best is just to live this life everyday.
D: Probably when i almost loose my eye in Ingolstatd in Germany. After we did the barmitzva of noze. I slept with one eye open, and when i woke up was really scared! The best one is that we played in Ukraina and met my wife!
J: What happen on the road stays on the road that why i love our job.
Voice, synth and percussion. there will never be a fourth? Projects for the future? With whom you would like to collaborate with?
C: We have no limits in terms of collaborations, personally i would like one day to do a record in Louisiana USA working with some bayou artists chanting in a 400 years old french, there is an amazing mix of culture, from native indians, mixed with carribeans grooves and forms heritage, with modern Nola styles from jazz and marching bands to Lil Wayne.
D: We collaborated with so many people, and will. Music is made to be share. I would like to go back to Mali and make some music with people there again. It’s an amazing place, where u can hear the roots of blues.
J: At the moment Micky Blanco, Santigold or Mr Oizo.
Finally, if you had not musicians, what other job would you have done? Have you any other passion besides music that you would like to carry on?
C: I think i would be a not talented drug dealer …or i could work at the bar in Salon Zur Wilde Renate, Berlin Beach.
D: Maybe some politic!
J: Shoe bizness, restaurent and club, beach bar, surfer, burger shop.
