Un giocattolino che però negli ultimi sette anni ha sfornato alcune hit piuttosto importanti nella scena electroclash. Pensate alla colonna sonora degli autoscontri ed avete la musica di ZZT, non esattamente la più colta, ma sicuramente la più ‘scassona’ in giro. Come dire: ignoranza elegante! Abbiamo incontrato entrambi per una chiacchierata su di loro, le loro due città (Tiga è di Montreal e Zombie Nation di Monaco) e sull’attuale stato della musica elettronica.
Bene, incominciamo dall’inizio: come mai ZZT? Pensavate al videogioco di Tim Sweeney del 1991 uscito per la EpicGames? O avevate in mente gli Z Z Top? Considerando la conoscenza videoludica di Florian (tutti ci ricordiamo il singolo Kenkraft400 con il campione di Stardust di David Whittarker) mi viene da pensare alla prima delle ipotesi…

Siete in giro dal 2007, con la vostra prima uscita “Lower State of Counsciousness”, e a distanza di 7 anni state ora per pubblicare un nuovo singolo. Cosa è cambiato negli ultimi sette anni nel mondo del clubbing? Il primo remix di una vostra traccia era ad opera dei Justice, che nel mondo della musica elettronica suona come un milione di anni fa…
T: I tempi cambiano, ma ZZT resiste al di fuori delle mode e dei tempi! ZZT è un’entità la quale esiste solamente nel proprio tempo…
Il vostro nuovo disco si intitola “Giving In/ZZTem 700 Bonus Beat”, potete descrivercelo? Le due tracce sono piuttosto diverse tra di loro: mentre la prima è una cavalcata tutta pianoforti house, la seconda è una capolavoro acid funk à la Shit & Shine…
Z: Queste sono le prime tracce che abbiamo scritto e registrato a Montreal e non a Monaco. ZZT è progetto fondato sull’idea di jam session, tanto che noi lavoriamo quasi come una band. Le due tracce riflettono chi noi siamo, le nostre due personalità, ma sono anche due istantanee di un preciso momento nel tempo.
Siete di due città diverse: Tiga da Montreal e Zombie Nation da Monaco. Come vi siete conosciuti? E come queste due città influenzano la vostra musica? O meglio: cosa c’è di Montreal e cosa di Monaco nella vostra musica?
T: ci siamo conosciuti durante il periodo Gigolo (l’etichetta di Dj Hell) e dell’electroclash (genere electro che andava di moda nei primi 2000). La nostra amicizia è dunque cresciuta ed è stato naturale che iniziassimo a fare musica insieme. Penso di parlare per entrambi quando dico che ci piace questo mix di energia e caos nella nostra musica. In più, Zombie ha un’incredibile capacità live, mentre io ho un approccio più da dj, cosa che funziona molto bene dal vivo: l’unione di questi due aspetti ha qualcosa di magico. Non ci piace annoiarci insomma. Monaco è come un tempio per ZZT: è la mia seconda casa ed è una componente fondamentale per il DNA di ZZT.
Avete sempre voluto pubblicare un intero album o è naturalmente capitato?
Z: Ad un certo punto, durante gli anni, ci eravamo resi conto di avere una collezione piuttosto cospicua di musica. Non so ancora spiegarmi di come abbiamo fatto ad uscircene con tutto questo materiale in così poco tempo… non c’è mai stata l’idea di pubblicare o registrare un disco, direi dunque che sì, è capitato…
Come lavorate? Avete registrare negli studi della Turbo (etichetta di Tiga)? Usate macchine analogiche o piuttosto preferite laptop e software?
Z: Be’, prendiamo il meglio da entrambi due modi di fare musica. Come ho detto prima però, siamo proprio come una band, il ché è solo possibile con l’hardware. Ti faccio un’esempio: mentre io sto “spippolando” un synth modulare, Tiga sta manovrando un sequencer ed un delay allo stesso tempo. Dopo dieci minuti, ne togliamo cinque secondi e li usiamo per una canzone, ahhahaha
Ci date una vostra definizione di musica elettronica? Questo genere ha dei confini molto labili, e mai così nebulosi come negli ultimi anni: di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di musica elettronica?
T: Mmmh, penso che questa definizione di genere fosse più applicabile venti anni fa, ma ora non ha più senso onestamente, soprattutto ora che tutta la musica è scritta utilizzando macchine. ZZT non ci pensa francamente a questo: è un problema che lasciamo volentieri ad altri…
Infine, dovremmo aspettarci un nuovo disco da ZZT?
Z: Assolutamente no, ZZT non soddisfa alcune aspettativa! È il nostro progetto/giocattolino per le vacanze![/tab]
[tab title=”English”]ZZT is a project made up by Tiga and Zombie Nation. Born and raised as nothing more than a game, this project is now almost a full time job for both of them, as it is growing more and more in popularity and quality. To describe the music of ZZT, let’s think about a soundtrack of a far away fair with bumper cars and games: something in between the tacky and the amusement. We met Tiga and Zombie Nation and we discussed about several topics, such as the current status of the electronic music, ZZT and their lovely cities.
Well, first of all: why ZZT? Do you mean the 1991 Video game by Tim Sweeney for EpicGames? Or do you mean ZZ Top? Considering that Florian has a good knowledge about video games, I may say the first one…
Z: Well, our names are Z and T. The Z in the middle must be a mistake that happened along the way!
You have been around since 2007, with your first release “Lower State of Consciousness”, and you are now about to release a brand new record. What has changed in the last 7 years in terms of club music? Your first remix was made by Justice, that is a sign of times indeed!
T: the times always change, but ZZT exists outside of these changes/scenes. ZZT exists simply in ZZT time!
Your new record is “Giving In/SyZZTem 700 Bonus Beat”, can you describe it? The two tracks are pretty different from each other: while the first is a housy piano track, the second is an acid funk à la Shit & Shine.
Z: these are the first tracks we did in the studio in Montreal and not in Munich. ZZT is very much a jam based project, we almost work like a band. The two tracks reflect what we both like, but they are also a snapshot of a brief moment in time.
You are obviously from different cities: Tiga from Montreal and Zombie Nation from Munich. How have you met each other? And how these two different background are present in your music? I mean: what is Montreal and what is Munich in your music?
T: We met in Miami in the Gigolo/Electroclash era: I think bonding over the fact we both had bizarre major hits (Kernkraft and Sunglasses At Night). Our friendship grew, and it naturally moved to making music together. I think we both have a basic love for ENERGY and a little bit of CHAOS in our music. Also, Z has an incredible LIVE ability, while I have the traditional DJ approach. Together it is magic. We don’t like to be bored. Munich is the spiritual home of ZZT: it is my second home, and very much part of the ZZT DNA.
Have you always wanted to record an album as ZZT or it just happened?
Z: At some point we realized that we had created quite a collection of great music. I still don’t understand how we managed to come up with that on such a short time. There was never a plan to do an album, so I´d say it just happened.
How do you work? Do you record at the Turbo Studios? Do you use more analogue machines or laptops with software?
Z: we use the best of both worlds. But as I mentioned before: we jam like a band, and that is only possible with hardware. For example I am twisting knobs on the modular synth, T is operating the step sequencer and cranking an old digital delay. After we recorded 10 minutes we cut out 5 seconds and use it as a song, hahah.
Can you give us your definition of electronic music? This genre is massive and its boundaries are very cloudy, what are you talking about when you talk about electronic music?
T: I think 20 years ago maybe these definations/genres meant something, but now they don’t. almost all msuic now is made with machines. ZZT doesn’t really think about this: we leave that to other people.
Finally, should we expect another full record from ZZT?
Z: no, ZZT does not fulfill any expectations. It´s our feel good holiday project![/tab]
