[tab title=”Italiano”]Gavin Lynch giovane musicista, produttore e ingegnere del suono di Dublino, con il progetto Matador, il suo sound particolare e release tutte di altissima qualità, grazie anche all’egida di casa Minus e al supporto di Richie Hawtin, ha indubbiamente lasciato un segno importante e tangibile nel panorama techno mondiale.
Il prossimo 6 aprile Matador, insieme ad Ellen Allien, Blawan e alla nostra perla italiana Carola Pisaturo, salirà sul palco dell’Old River Park di Napoli per “International Talent In The Park”, l’evento che da alcuni anni vede i clubbers partenopei alle prese con una pasquetta elettronica in compagnia dei migliori artisti internazionali. Minimale come la sua musica, a tratti lisergico, dalla nostra intervista emerge un artista determinato, consapevole del proprio lavoro e dei propri obiettivi, che lascia poco spazio alle parole preferendo l’approccio tutto sostanza. Non possiamo dire di averlo conosciuto a fondo e ci sarebbe piaciuto capire qualcosa in più ma si sa, l’arte vuole il suo mistero.
Prima domanda, com’è iniziata la tua storia nella musica? Se dovessimo guardare nella tua collezione di dischi cosa troveremmo?
Di tutto, dalla Motown ai Fleetwood Mac, ai Lemon Jelly e la lista prosegue. Mi piace ascoltare tanta musica, techno, house, pop, rock, jazz, praticamente di tutto.
Com’è stato crescere a Dublino? Pensi che in qualche modo abbia influenzato la tua musica? So hai cominciato a fare il dj a 16 anni, che musica suonavi?
Storia molto comune, ho comprato i giradischi a 16, mi sono trasferito in città a 18, comperato dischi techno, suonato i dischi, volevo fare pezzi miei, ho imparato come si fa e poi ho fatto i dischi. All’epoca m’influenzava molto gente come Dave Clarke e Jeff Mills.
Secondo la tua esperienza, cosa pensi sia più importante per rimanere rilevanti nel panorama musicale odierno?
Devi essere originale, non copiare, rimanere fedele alle tue convinzioni e soprattutto, lavorare duro, non è facile!
Parlando di cose tecniche, hai uno studio? Hardware o software? Che DAW utilizzi? Hai qualche strumento preferito? Dato che hai un suono molto curato e sappiamo che prima di fare il produttore sei stato anche un ingegnere del suono, pensi che ti abbia aiutato a definirlo?
Uso Logic, il resto è un segreto.
La performance live è uno degli elementi principali del tuo show, cosa ti piace di più, improvvisare o l’assenza di vincoli? Che setup usi e come prepari un set?
Uso due portatili, Native Instruments Maschine ed un controller midi Livid. Uso Ableton e faccio tutto al momento. Penso che sia la configurazione più creativa per me, anche se la cambio sempre, aggiungo nuovi elementi, etc…
Il tuo ultimo EP “Play With Me pt.2” uscito a marzo è schizzato al nr. 2 nella classifica di Beatport dopo appena una settimana e sappiamo che stai lavorando ad un album che uscirà nel 2015, veramente impressionante, come ti senti dopo aver ricevuto così tanti riscontri positivi? Ci puoi dire qualcosa dell’album?
Adesso è al numero 1 e mi sento benedetto ogni giorno, ma lavoro duro in studio e anche quando viaggio, in questi anni ho trovato sono riuscito a trovare il giusto bilanciamento tra le due cose. Ho finito l’album a gennaio, verrà pubblicato verso fine anno.
Viaggi intorno al mondo, ti esibisci live, sforni remix, produci tracce nuove, come fai a fare tutto?
Ho un team, in viaggio la mia fidanzata gestisce il tuor poi i miei manager e le agenzie fanno un ottimo lavoro per mettere tutto insieme. Tutto questo mi permette di avere anche il tempo per concentrarmi in studio.
Se un giovane produttore ti chiedesse un consiglio su come sviluppare la sua carriera, quale sarebbe?
Lavora duro, concentrati, capisci bene come funzionano le cose. Per me significa essere in grado di fare tutto dall’inizio alla fine, dalla parte creativa, al mix e infine il mastering.
Il 6 aprile suonerai all’Old River Park di Napoli con Ellen Alien, Blawan e Carola Pisaturo nell’evento “International Talent In The Park”, un grande appuntamento annuale qui in Italia, cosa hai in programma per il tuo set in un occasione così particolare?
Ascolterete alcune tracce nuove dal mio ultimo EP e ho in serbo un paio di sorprese che credo non si aspetti nessuno. Mi piace suonare in Italia, il pubblico è strepitoso, come gli Irlandesi; mi aspetto una grande affluenza a Napoli perché ho sentito parlare benissimo dell’Old River, non vedo l’ora.[/tab]

April 6 Matador, alongside Ellen Allien, Blawan and our Italian pearl Carola Pisaturo, will be performing at the Old River Park for “International Talent In The Park”, the event that in the past few year leads the Easter Monday in Naples with top artists from around the world. Minimal like his music, sometime lysergic, from our interview come to light a determined artist, aware of his job and focused on his objectives, that leave very small space to words, preferring a much more concrete approach. We can’t say to have gone deeper with him and we’d liked to understand some more but we know, art need some mystery.
First question, what is your musical background? If we were to go through your music collection what sort of stuff are we likely to find.
Everything from Motown to Fleetwood Mac to Lemon Jelly…the list goes on… I enjoy listening to most music, be it techno, house, pop, rock, jazz…all sorts really…
How was growing up in Dublin? Do you think it has somehow influenced your music? I know that you’ve djing there when you where 16, what kind of music did you played?
Usual story really, got turntables at 16, moved to the big city at 18, bought techno records, played records, wanted to make my own records, learned how to make records, made records, at the time people like Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills influenced me.
Giving your experience, what do you think is more important to stay relevant in today music business?
You have to be individual, don’t copy anyone else, stay true to what you believe in, and above all work hard, it’s not easy!
Talking about technical stuff, do you have a studio? Hardware or software? Which DAW are you using? Do you have any weapons of choice? Since you have a very distinctive sound and we know that before being a producer you were a sound engineer, do you think that this could have helped shaping it?
I use Logic and the rest is a secret.
Performing live is a key element of your show, what do you like most, improvisation of the lack of boundaries? What is your setup and how did you prepare a set?
I use 2 laptops, a native instruments Machine, and a livid midi controller. I run Ableton on the laptops and work on the fly. I feel it’s the most creative set up for me, but I’m always changing it, adding new elements etc…
Your last EP “Play With Me pt.2” released in March skyrocketed to nr. 2 on Beatport after a week and we know that you are working on an album that should be released in 2015, that’s really impressive, how do you feel about all this fabulous feedback? Could you tell us something about the album?
It’s now number one and I feel blessed every day, but I also work hard in the studio and on the road, I’ve found a better balance this year in juggling studio time and touring. I wrote and album in January and that will be released towards the end of the year.
Travelling around the world, performing live, doing remixes, producing new tracks, how do you manage to fit all together.
I have a team, on the road my fiancée is my tour manager and then my management team and booking agents do a great job in piecing it all together. That then gives me the time to concentrate in the studio.
If you a young producer approach you for an advice about the best way to start or develop his career, what will it be?
Work hard, and be dedicated, and know how everything works inside out, for me it’s about being able to write everything from beginning to end, from the creative side, to mixing and then finally mastering.
April 06 you will be performing at the Old River Park in Naples alongside Ellen Alien, Blawan and Carola Pisaturo for “International Talent In The Park”, a big annual event here in Italy, what are you planning for your live set in this very special occasion?
You will hear some new music from my latest EP, and I’ve got one or two tricks up my sleeve that people might not expect. I love playing in Italy, the crowd is wild, just like the Irish and I’m expecting a big one in Naples because I’ve heard so many good things about Old River, can’t wait.[/tab]
