Abbiamo aspettato Gavin in una hall d’albergo per circa un’ora, eravamo in tre e ci domandavamo come fosse intervistare uno che prima di fare il dj ha scritto pagine su pagine per mixmag… dopo aver intervistato gente con alle spalle vent’anni di musica cosa sarà mai intervistare uno che suona da cosi poco tempo mi direte voi, ed invece posso garantirvi che tra “colleghi” non è mei facile risultare poco banali ed interessanti. Gavin comunque è risultato veramente una persona alla mano, un ragazzo come noi, come tutti noi. Ci ha raccontato come avesse apprezzato la cena in un classica hostaria romana, posti che dice di preferire ai freddisimi e poco caratteristici ristoranti chic in cui lo portano spesso quando viaggia per l’Europa. Lui è fatto cosi, ama scoprire i posti dove viaggia, ama scoprirne la cultura e le tradizioni. Gavin è arrivato in albergo con Andrea Lombardo, amico e Resident della serata Full Flava di cui l’irlandese era ospite. Gavin ama l’Italia, ci ha raccontato di un suo viaggio precedente a Venezia e di come si è ritrovato a giocare un Irlanda/Italia a pallone ubriaco alle 5 di mattina in piazza San Marco, ci ha raccontato della sua passione per i clubs e per i party, passione che ha sempre avuto e che ha sempre condiviso con i suoi amici fin dalle frequentazioni dei party di Leeds. Mi è rimasto impresso quando mi ha detto di ricordarsi un set di Cirillo al DC10 in cui l’italiano stava passando l’originale di The End dei Doors, ha usato il paragone per farci capire quanto apprezza sperimentare diversi generi senza fermarsi solamente a ciò che piace in quel momento al pubblico. Parlando di produzioni ci ha raccontato di come non sia un maniaco dell’analogico, ma preferisce ottimizzare al massimo i settaggi dei suoi software digitali, cosa che gli viene piuttosto bene considerando le sue ottime uscite su Cadenza, Cocoon e Kindisch. Il ragazzo tra un set e l’altro inoltre ama fare sport e si tiene in forma correndo… Entrando nel vivo della serata, il pubblico del Lanificio ha gradito quanto me uno dei primi dischi messi da Gavin, quell’A1 di “The Longest Night” su Olmeto di Layo e Bushwacka, Gavin ha dimostrato di saper tenere bene la pista. Chi sa se dopo aver vissuto a Londra e adesso a Berlino prima o poi non si trasferirà anche qui da noi, a detta del suo manager Roma gli è rimasta nel cuore.

We waited for Gavin in a hotel lobby for about an hour, it was three of us and we were asking ourselves how it would be to interview someone who used to write page after page for mixmag before becoming a DJ… after interviewing people with more than twenty years of music behind them, you might be thinking what is in it to interview someone who’s been playing since a short time. Instead I can guarantee that between “colleagues” it’s never easy to take little interest. Anyways Gavin seemed like a very down to earth person, a guy like us, like all of us. He started telling us about how he would appreciate a dinner in a classic roman “Hosteria”, which he prefers much more to the cold and uncharacteristic chic restaurants that they bring him to often when he’s travelling around europe. He’s made like that, he loves discovering the places he travels to, he loves discovering their culture and traditions. Gavin arrived at the hotel together with Andrea Lombardo, friend and resident of the Full Flava night, where the irishman was a guest. Gavin loves Italy, he told us about a recent trip of his to Venice and how he found himself playing an Ireland – Italy football match drunk, at 5am in the morning on Piazza San Marco, he told us about his passion for clubs and for parties, a passion he has always had and that he always shared with his friends since the times he used to party in Leeds. It impressed me when he remembered a set of Cirillo at DC10, where the Italian was playing the original version of The End by The Doors, he used the comparison to make us understand how he appreciates experimenting with different genres, without concentrating solely on what the public likes in that moment. Speaking of productions he told us how he isn’t that much of an analogic maniac, but he prefers to maximally optimise the settings of his digital software, something in which he succeeds, considering his good releases on Cadenza, Cocoon and Kindisch. Between this and that set, he also likes doing sport and keeping in shape by running… Going into the flow of the night, the crowd at Lanificio appreciated one of the first records played by Gavin as much as me, the A1 of “The Longest Night” on Olmeto by Layo and Bushwacka, Gavin proved he could take on the dancefloor very well. Who knows that after living in London and now in Berlin, sometime he may even move over here to us, according to his manager Rome stayed in his heart.
