[tab title=”Italiano”]Andrei Rata, noto ai più con il nome di Andrew Rayel, è senza dubbio uno dei giovani più promettenti del panorama trance degli ultimi anni. Poco più che ventenne, ancora studente universitario, ha alle spalle una solida gavetta in studio, che gli ha già permesso di occupare posizioni importanti nelle classifiche e di calcare i palchi più prestigiosi in ogni angolo del mondo. Poco più di un mese fa, ha dato alle stampe il suo album di debutto, “Find Your Harmony”: ci è sembrata una buona occasione per farci quattro chiacchiere.
“The Piano Man”: mai soprannome fu più appropriato! Qual è il tuo rapporto con il pianoforte? Le tue melodie vengono da lì?
Il pianoforte è il modo in cui tutto per me è iniziato, è stato il mio amore per il piano che ha convinto i miei genitori ad inscrivermi in una scuola musicale per affinare le mie conoscenz, che mi hanno portato fino ai miei giorni da produttore nei quali ho scoperto il mondo della dance e il background musicale di Andrew Rayel, e per cui sono conosciuto ora come “Piano Man”. Onestamente seguo la mia ispirazione quando le dita sfiorano i tasti del pianoforte e attingo da quello.
Come musicista hai una formazione classica, hai anche studiato qualcosa di audio engineering e music production? o sei un autodidatta?
In realtà sono autodidatta. Ho letto molti libri sull’argomento, e a dire la verità guardo ancora qualche tutorial.
Ho sentito che hai iniziato a produrre a soli 13 anni, come era il tuo studio allora?
A quei tempi il mio setup era davvero molto basilare, avevo un semplice PC e quello era tutto! Non avevo neanche delle normali monitor, erano solo piccoli speaker qualsiasi, per quello i miei mix dell’epoca suonavano un po’ strani.
Raramente si vede qualcuno emergere dalla scena trance/edm così velocemente e con la tua costanza: qual è il tuo segreto? Chi ti è di ispirazione musicalmente e personalmente parlando?
In realtà non c’è un segreto, la mia ispirazione arriva dalle esperienze della quotidianità, dal rapporto con i fan, ricordi del tour e dal contatto con quelle situazioni di ogni giorno che ti risvegliano e ti sono di ispirazione come l’amore, la natura, così come la mia famiglia e sicuramente le persone con cui vengo in contatto nel mio lavoro.
Fare un pezzo con Armin è stato come realizzare un sogno, per te?
Senza dubbio. Armin è stato la mia più grande ispirazione e un grande supporter della mia musica, per cui è stato un onore e un sogno, dato che lui è stato uno dei motivi per cui ho voluto iniziare a produrre e lavorare con lui mi ha segnato sia umanamente che dal punto di vista della mia carriera.
Qual è stata la pietra miliare della tua carriera fino ad ora?
Onestamente non riuscirei a sceglierne solo una nella mia carriera, ma tra le tante direi l’uscita del mio album “Find Your Harmony”, essere votato per la prima volta nella DJ Mag Top100 ed essere quello con più posizioni guadagnate nell’anno successivo, collaborare con Armin così come affiancarlo sul palco. Solo per citarne alcune!
Il tuo atteso album “Find Your Harmony” è stato presentato come uno degli highlights di quest’anno nella scena trance: raccontaci il suo processo di produzione! Ti sei trovato in studio un giorno e ti sei deciso a fare un intero album o è stato un percorso più organico?
“Find Your Harmony” è stato in produzione per più di due anni, era qualcosa che avevo in mente e su cui lavoravo fin dagli albori della mia carriera. Mettendo insieme varie idee e a poco a poco illuminandole e rendendole qualcosa di più grande, cercando le perfette combinazioni, e certamente gli show settimanali grazie ai quali sono venuto a contatto con il supporto dei fan mi hanno aiutato molto! Dopo ogni serata cercavo di ricordarmi la sensazione che avevo sul palco e ogni volta che tornavo in studio tentavo di ricrearla nell’immagine della folla davanti a me. Le loro espressioni e i loro sorrisi, questo è quello che mi ha aiutato a comporre “Find Your Harmony” e spero in questo modo di rendere la loro vita un pochino migliore. Sono molto grato a tutti coloro che hanno contribuito a rendere questo sogno una realtà.
Qual è la tua traccia preferita dell’album?
Impossibile scegliere! L’intero progetto è come un figlio per me, e non puoi scegliere il tuo figlio preferito, vero? L’intero album è una grande storia e ogni brano contribuisce a renderla accattivante. Ogni traccia racconta di una storia e di un’esperienza.
E tu, la tua armonia l’hai trovata?
In realtà non credo. Ho sicuramente trovato la mia armonia nella musica, ma non si esaurisce con questo! “Find Your Harmony” non riguarda solo la musica ma la vita stessa, l’amore, la saggezza la famiglia, l’unità e molto altro e il perfetto equilibrio tra ognuna di loro. Per me va bene, sono ancora giovane e molte di queste cose sono difficili da ottenere. Ci sono ancora così tante opportunità nel futuro, spero che invecchiando possa dirmi felice e soddisfatto di aver trovato la mia armonia.
A cosa stai lavorando al momento? Quali sono i tuoi programmi per l’immediato futuro?
Sto sempre raccogliendo idee per le prossime uscite, alche già per il prossimo album, poi progetti per degli show e produzioni più grandiosi, collaborazioni, remix, summer festivals che sono sempre meravigliosi e poi vorrei espandere il mio radio show “Find Your Harmony”.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]Is safe to say that Andrei Rata, better known as Andrew Rayel, is one of the most rising young talent of the last few years in the Trance scene. He’s 22, he’s still a student, but rose through the ranks, climbing the charts and playing on the most important stages all over the world. He just released his first artist album, called “Find Your Harmony”, so we took the chance to have a chat with him.
“The Piano Man”: never a nickname was such appropriate! How’s your relationship with the piano? Do you usually start jamming on it, to create your melodies?
Piano is how everything started for me, it was my love for the piano which lead my parents to enroll me in an orchestral music school to broaden my knowledge of music, in which it lead on my production days in which I merged the world of dance music and Andrew Rayel’s background knowledge, and in which I got known for as the piano man. I honestly just go with how my inspiration go when my hands touch the piano keys and take it from there.
As a musician, you’re classical trained, have you studied something about audio engineering and music production also? Or were you self-taught?
I was self taught. I red many books about it and currently still watching some videos about it.
I know you started producing at 13 only: how was your studio setup, back then?
Back then my setup was pretty easy ! Just a simple PC computer and that’s it. I didn’t even have normal speakers , some random small speakers. That’s why my mixes sounded really weird back then.
I’ve rarely seen someone rising as fast and constantly as you’re doing, in the edm and trance scene: what’s your secret? Who’s your inspiration, both musically and personally speaking?
Well, there is no secret, my inspiration comes from daily life experience, my connection with my fans, tour experience, things you see happening in daily life that wakens you up or makes you inspired like love, and nature, as well as my family, and of course all the people I work with.
Making a track together with Armin himself was like a dream come true, for you?
For sure. Armin has been my biggest inspiration, and a big supporter of my music and it’s honor as well as a dream, as he is one of the people that inspired me to produce music and having the chance to do a collaboration with someone like that is a big mark in your life as well your career.
Which has been the most important milestone in your career so far?
Honestly I can’t pick one because it’s impossible for me but several milestones I can mention such as releasing my artist album “Find Your Harmony”, being voted for the first time in DJ Mag, and being highest climber in the following year, creating a collaboration with the man himself Armin Van Buuren, as well being on his shoulders during the collab on stage! Just to mention a few.
Your highly-anticipated album “Find Your Harmony” has been presented as one of this year’s highlights in the trance scene: tell us about the making of it! Have you sit back in the studio one day and said “ok, let’s do an entire album”, or has been a more organic process?
“Find Your Harmony” has been in the work for over 2+ years, it was something I had in mind and was working on since the start of my career, you know brainstorming here and there, and step by step just brightening the ideas and making them bigger, searching for the perfect vocalists, and of course the weekly shows in which I get the love and inspiration from the fans that I need ! After every show I tried to remember that feeling from the stage, and when I went to the studio I just pictured the whole crowd in front of me. Their happy faces and smiles, that’s what inspired me to create “Find Your Harmony” and I hope with it I can make their life at least a little bit better. I’m really thankful for everyone who has contributed in making something that was just a dream coming to reality.
Which is your favorite track in the album?
Impossible to choose! The entire project is my baby, and you can’t pick your favorite child, can you? The whole album is a big story, and all the parts together make it captivating! Each track has its own story and experience behind it which tells something.
Have you found your own harmony, yet?
Well I don’t think so, I certainly found my harmony in music, but that’s not it! “Find Your Harmony” is not only about music, it’s about the whole life, love, wisdom, family, unity etc. and perfect balance between them. And it’s ok, I’m still young and most of these things are really hard to achieve J There are still so many things to do in the future and I hope one day, when I get old I will be proud and happy for all the things I’ve done and I would say that I found my Harmony!
What are you working on, at the moment? Which are your main goals, for the next future?
Well always working on ideas for upcoming tracks, some ideas already for the next album, bigger show concepts and productions, collaborations, remixes, summer time festivals are always amazing, and expanding my radio show “Find Your Harmony”.[/tab]
