[tab title=”Italiano”]Parlare di Vakant significa addentrarsi all’interno della musica clubbing dell’ultima decade della scena tedesca e non solo. Il concetto di amicizia e di sviluppo della carriera di un’artista all’interno di Vakant sembra andare di pari passo con la qualità della musica proposta ed infatti dal roster di Alex Knoublach sono usciti artisti come Tolga Fidan, Alex Smoke ed Onur Ӧzer con alcune delle loro più importanti release. Con lo sguardo rivolto al futuro, abbiamo parlato di minimalismo in musica, di come sia cambiata la proposta negli anni e dei nuovi progetti di Vakant.
Prima di fondare Vakant, eri già coinvolto all’interno dell’industria musicale; quale era lo stato di salute a quel tempo? Lasciando per un momento da parte il “casus Alex Smoke”, quali erano le motivazioni per fondare una nuova etichetta?
Quando un qualcosa come 15 anni fa ho iniziato a lavorare nel mondo musicale, si era già arrivati alla solita conclusione che il meglio si era realizzato nel passato e che l’industria era in inesorabile crollo. Si parlava di anni in cui le riunione erano di stampo dionisiaco come orge romane e che, apparentemente, le vendite passavano il tetto per cui le etichette avevano la possibilità di spendere molti soldi sui loro progetti. Apparentemente, sono arrivato tardi. Guardando indietro però mi ritrovo a sentire anche oggi il piagnucolio della gente riguardo l’industria musicale quindi alla fine non era poi così male, certo oggi è molto più difficile o comunque complicato riuscire a vivere di musica. Il guardarsi indietro può rappresentare un qualcosa di utile ma alle volte deleterio se si va troppo indietro. Alla fine tutto è in costante evoluzione e devi trovare il tuo posto, il fatto che ti piaccia o meno quello che trovi è un’altra questione. Le mie motivazioni: ero già coinvolto nella direzione di una piccola imprint di bootleg con lo stesso amico con cui ho fondato Vakant pochi anni dopo e quello che abbiamo fatto è stato solo lavorare su qualcosa di molto più genuino e duraturo.
Molti degli addetti ai lavori o generalmente chi si occupa e ascolta club music si riferisce a Vakant affibbiandole il tratto distintivo della scena minimal…sei d’accordo con la definizione?
Sì e no…siamo partiti quando la minimal house e la techno hanno avuto il loro picco e come solitamente capita, quando ti viene data un’etichetta è difficile scrollartela di dosso. Non penso che rientriamo all’interno della definizione di label minimal tipica dal momento in cui abbiamo fatto nel corso degli anni uscite di tipo disco e break beat. Ma c’è comunque un fattore comune nella nostra musica, artwork e approccio generale legato ad un certo minimalismo.
E riguardo al concetto di minimalismo, hai un riferimento personale che potrebbe essere applicato in Vakant? E come hai visto mutare il concetto applicato in musica?
Non più della pratica comune ma credo nel principio per cui “meno è meglio” e credo sia valido per molte cose della vita, non solo in arte. Per quanto riguarda Vakant cerco di mantenere un certo understatement, che sia la musica a parlare per sé piuttosto che urlarlo all’aria. Difficile essere ascoltati alle volte ma credo nella tenacia. Mettendo da parte questo, non seguo uno specifico registro minimal di questi tempi. Ho dato uno sguardo alla “minimal top 10” di uno di quei grandi shop digitali ma nulla ha a che fare con una sorta di minimalismo in musica o nella concezione. Sono un po’ scocciato delle classificazioni a voler essere onesto, credo che portino sempre un certo grado di preconcetto e questo limita la strada che la musica avrebbe se fosse ascoltata solo per quello che è.
Il roster di Vakant sembra avere le caratteristiche di un rat-pack: pochi artisti e un processo di sviluppo che parte dalla scoperta dell’artista. Familiare. Quali sono le strade per entrarci, le chiavi?
Non c’è un concetto dietro di essa…sono arrivati nel momento giusto, con la musica giusta e la giusta attitudine. L’amicizia è un roba importante qui.
Vakant ha passato il traguardo dei dieci anni già da due anni. Se adesso ti ritrovassi di nuovo con quell’EP di Alex Smoke (Simple Things, 2004) in mano, fonderesti Vakant anche alla luce di come è cambiata la scena?
Se avessi l’opportunità di uscire nuovamente con la stessa ragazza a cui hai rubato il primo bacio, ci usciresti per davvero con lei oggi? Impossibile rispondere… (mh, nda). Tutto è sembrato essere al posto giusto e momento giusto e si, sicuramente, Alex avrebbe portato musica diversa ai giorni d’oggi. Ma quella uscita in particolare è invecchiata per bene, credo.
Quali sono stati i passi più significativi del percorso di Vakant? Cosa arriverà nel futuro?
12 anni di percorso portano con sé necessariamente tanti momenti memorabili, ma preferisco guardare al futuro che percorrere la linea della memoria. Stiamo lavorando proprio adesso ad alcune release del nostro core. Nico, Tolga, Livio & Roby, Anonym, Sons of Tiki stanno tutti per far uscire nuova musica quest’anno. Ci saranno ancora più party a venire così come progetti radar che mi fanno molto felice perché posso far uscire musica senza il menzionato pregiudizio.
Hai una personale Top 5 di tracce che definiscono l’ethos del tuo gusto in musica che possiamo trovare nelle release Vakant?
No, ma adoro fare classifiche. Eccola:

The concept of friendship and career development of an artist within Vakant seems going hand in hand with the quality of the music. In fact, the proposal roster of Alex Knoblauch include artists like Tolga Fidan, Alex Smoke and Onur Ӧzer that published some of the most important release of their career via Vakant. With an eye to the future, we talked about minimalism in music and how the proposal changed in years and what will be the new Vakant projects.
Before founding Vakant, you were already involved in the music industry… what was the health state of the music industry at that time? Despite the Alex Smoke issue, what were the motivations to establish a new label?
When I started to work in the music scene somewhat 15 years ago it has already been the common conclusion that everything has been much better back in the day and that the industry is relentlessly going down. There were stories around from business meetings like roman orgies and music sales apparently went regularly through the roof giving the labels the possibilities to spend a lot of money on their projects. Apparently, I came too late. But looking back it feels similar to what people are whining about today and in fact it wasn’t that bad back then, even it is harder or at least more complicated today to make a living out of music. Maybe this aspect is crucial for this scene or the industry, retrospect is always a big matter and sometimes too much. In the end, everything is constantly evolving and you have to find your place. Liking it or not is another question. Regarding my motivation, I was already running a small bootleg imprint with the same friend I was starting Vakant a few years after, and we simply wanted to work on something more genuine and enduring.
Most of the reporters or general club music addicted, refers to Vakant as a distinctive minimal label…do you agree on that?
Yes and no… we started the label at a time when minimal house and techno had its peak and as usual once you are labeled with something it is hard to get rid of it. I don’t think that we’re a typical minimal label since we put out pretty much everything from disco to break beats across the years, but one common factor you can find in our music, artwork and general approach is a certain minimalism.
Do you have a personal reference about the concept of minimalism in art that could be applied in Vakant? How have you seen changing the minimal music catalogue in the years?
Not really much more than the common “less is more” principle which I think is valid for many things in life and not only art. For Vakant I like to keep things a bit understatement, let the music speak for itself rather than yelling it across the aether. Hard to get heard sometimes but I believe in tenacity. Besides that I’m not really following a specific minimal music catalogue these days. I have been checking the “minimal” top 10 at some bigger digital shops a few weeks ago but that has nothing to do with any sort of minimalism, music or concept wise. Getting a bit tired of classifications to be honest since they always carry a certain preconception with it and limit the ways music could go if it just gets heard.
Vakant roster seems to be a rat-pack in the dance community, few artists and a developing process that take place from the discovery of the artist. The concept of family seems to be strong here. What should be the keys to enter in this family?
There is no concept behind it… they came at the right time, with the right music and the right attitude. Friendship is an important factor here.
Two years ago Vakant passed the 10th anniversary. In these ten years, the club scene and the music industry changed rapidly and massively also due to the information technology and the competition is harder than before. If you would have that Alex Smoke EP (Simple Things, 2004) in your hands nowadays, would you decide again to start Vakant?
If you would have the chance to date the same girl you stole your first kiss from when you were young, would you still go out with her today? Impossible question to answer. Everything seemed to be right at the time, and Alex would surely hand out different music today. But that particular record aged pretty well I think.
Would you track the most significant steps of the Vakant journey? What will be the next release and what we could expect?
Running a label for 12 years and with this intensity is necessarily filled with a lot of remarkable moments, but I rather look into the future than walking down the memory lane. Right now we’re working on releases of some of our core members… Nico, Tolga, Livio & Roby, Anonym, Sons of Tiki all gonna have some new music out this year. There will be more parties to come and a few under the radar projects which are especially fun for me since I can get music out to the people without the above mentioned prejudice.
