Non ha di certo bisogno di ulteriori presentazioni il duo berlinese Booka Shade, uno dei capitoli più promettenti e seguiti nell’enciclopedia mondiale della musica elettronica. Fra una tappa e l’altra del loro live tour, Arno Kammermeier e Walter Merziger trovano il tempo di parlarci dei loro esordi, delle loro anime divise a metà fra l’essere dj e musicisti, del distacco dalla Get Physical, ma soprattutto decidono di rivelare a noi di Soundwall l’imminente rilascio di un nuovo EP… decisamente “scottante”!
Concedeteci una prima domanda di rito un po’ scontata: come vi siete conosciuti e com’è nato il vostro duo?
Ci siamo incontrati suonando in una school band all’età di quindici anni. La nostra prima band si chiamava Indian Summer, poi ci chiamammo invece Planet Claire, in onore di una traccia dei B52’s che portava quel nome. I primi due 12″ sotto il nome di “Booka Shade” uscirono nel 1995, ma i Booka Shade come li conoscete oggi nacquero poco dopo la creazione della label Get Physical, nel 2002.
Come mai avete deciso di essere allo stesso tempo dj e strumentisti? Vi sentite “diversi” dagli altri dj per questo vostro dualismo?
Entrambi abbiamo da sempre avuto il desiderio di fare della musica uno stile di vita, di poter “vivere il sogno”. E l’abbiamo fatto, siamo arrivati ad essere musicisti e produttori. Il progetto Booka Shade è principalmente quello di una live band, il DJing è venuto dopo, solamente nel 2009. In effetti a volte capita di sentirci come alieni, perché suoniamo musica live nel mondo dei dj, e d’altro canto quando suoniamo in consolle, ci sentiamo allo stesso tempo musicisti. La gente viene ai nostri set essenzialmente per ascoltare i nostri brani e in un certo senso la nostra è una situazione abbastanza gradevole, perché al mondo d’oggi, dove tutto sembra essere “lo stesso”, è bello invece essere “diversi”.
Siete gli autori di capolavori come “Mandarine Girl”, “Night Falls”, “Body Language” e “In White Rooms”: avete mai avuto paura di non riuscire più a concepire qualcosa in grado di raggiungere un tale successo?
Non ci è mai capitato.
Come vi siete sentiti ad abbandonare la Get Physical Music, l’etichetta da voi fondata assieme ai M.A.N.D.Y.? Si è trattato di una separazione sofferta?
Si, è stato difficile, ma era la giusta decisione: nessuno di noi si sentiva più a proprio agio. E data l’amicizia instaurata con Patrick e Philipp, abbiamo deciso che sarebbe stato meglio non esser più loro partner commerciali, proprio per non dover dare un taglio a questo nostro rapporto.
Siete stati sul punto di sciogliere il vostro duo. Cosa vi ha fatto cambiare idea?
La produzione del nostro album “EVE” ha avuto tempi lunghi. In questi due anni sapevamo di avere tra le mani delle grandi tracce, ma non eravamo felici di come stessero andando le cose e realizzammo di aver bisogno di un cambiamento, per sentirci nuovamente ispirati e produttivi. Questo è stato possibile solamente quando lasciammo la nostra sede di Berlino per cercare uno studio di registrazione da qualche altra parte.
Cosa ha ispirato la scelta del titolo del vostro ultimo album?
L’aver registrato l’album in uno studio vicino a Manchester, chiamato “EVE”.
Per il vostro singolo “Love Drug”, avete deciso di collaborare con il vocalist degli Azari & III, Fritz Helder. Com’è stato lavorare con lui?
Abbiamo incontrato Fritz occasionalmente durante spettacoli o festival in cui suonammo insieme e oltretutto siamo stati sotto la stessa agenzia di management. Gli abbiamo chiesto di passare dal nostro studio la prima volta che fosse capitato a Berlino, così avremmo avuto modo di sperimentare qualche idea. Quello che non sapevamo è che essendo Fritz un party guy, sarebbe venuto in studio direttamente dal Panorama Bar! Le registrazioni quindi ci hanno rubato un bel po’ di tempo, ma lui sembrava abbastanza ispirato. È un fantastico performer e l’abbiamo voluto con noi sul palco anche durante uno show a Londra all’inizio di quest’anno.
Come stanno andando le vostre date? C’è un posto in particolare dove amate esibirvi più di tutti gli altri?
Siamo in procinto di iniziare un nuovo live tour da Ottobre fino agli inizi di Dicembre che ci porterà a Londra, Dublino, negli Stati Uniti e in Australia. Amiamo suonare in qualsiasi luogo. Nel 2015 speriamo di avere la possibilità di portare il nostro spettacolo live in Italia, restiamo in attesa di suonare in qualche folle discoteca italiana sulla spiaggia d’estate!
Svelateci cosa avete in serbo per i prossimi mesi!
Siamo molto felici di annunciare il rilascio del nostro nuovo EP “Fire”, previsto per l’11 Novembre. Tutti e tre i brani proposti sono stati passati in heavy rotation durante i nostri dj set quest’estate. La title track “Line Of Fire”, ad esempio, ha riscosso davvero molto successo al Creamfields in Inghilterra. Le atmosfere di “Back To Monza” suscitano in noi il ricordo delle vibrazioni notturne del club Monza di Francoforte dei primi anni del 2000, quando le sonorità della Get Physical andavano definendosi. “Right On Track” sarà presto presentata per la prima volta nei nostri set, così come nei prossimi live show.[/tab]

Between one gig and the other of their live tour, Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger find the time to tell us about their beginnings, their souls divided between being DJs and musicians, the detachment from Get Physical, but mostly, they decided to reveal to Soundwall the upcoming release of a new EP… very “hot”!
Where did you meet and how was “Booka Shade” born?
We met in a school band at the age of 15. Our first bands were called Indian Summer and Planet Claire (after a B52´s song). The first two 12″s under the name Booka Shade were released in 1995, but Booka Shade the way we know them today started shortly after we set up the label Get Physical, in 2002.
Why did you decide to be DJs and also musicians? Do you feel “different” from all others DJs?
Both of us always had the dream to make music as a living, to “live the dream”. And that’s what we did. We’re both musicians and producers, Booka Shade is mainly a Live band, the DJing only came a lot later, in 2009 approx. Sometimes we do feel like aliens indeed, because we play Live music in the dj world, and when we dj, it still feels like we’re musicians. People come to our dj sets to essentially hear our own songs. And in a way, it’s a quite comfy situation because in today’s world, where everything seems to be “the same”, it’s great to be “different”.
You are the authors of masterpieces such as “Mandarine Girl”, “Night Falls”, “Body Language” and “In White Rooms”: have you ever been afraid of not being able to do something equally successful?
No not really.
How did you feel leaving Get Physical Music, the label you started alongside M.A.N.D.Y.? Was it a suffered separation?
Yes it hurt, but it was the right decision. None of us felt comfortable anymore, and as we are still friends with patrick and philipp from M.A.N.D.Y., we decided it would be better not to be business partners anymore, it would have killed the friendship.
You were on the verge of breaking up. What made you change your mind?
The production of the album “EVE” took a very long time. 2 years into the production, we knew we had great songs, but we weren’t happy with the way things were going and realised we needed a change, in order to feel excited again. That’s when we decided to leave our usual working surrounding in Berlin and look for a recording studio somewhere else.
What inspired the title of the album?
We recorded the album in a studio close to Manchester, called “EVE”.
For your last single “Love Drug”, you decided to team up with Azari & III vocalist Fritz Helder. How was working with him?
We met fritz occasionally at shows or festivals we played together and also have the same management. We asked him to come to our studio next time he would be in Berlin, so we could try out ideas. What we didn’t know was that – being the party guy he is – he would come straight from panorama bar to the studio! Recordings took a while, but he seemed quite inspired. He’s a fantastic performer and joined us on stage for example at a show we played in London earlier this year.
How are going your gigs? Is there a place where you love to play above all?
We’re just about to start a new live tour from October to early December which will lead us to London, Dublin, the US and Australia. All places we really enjoy playing. In 2015 we hope to get the chance to bring the Live show to Italy, and also we’re looking forward to DJing at some of those crazy beach discos in Italy in summer!
What you have in store for the next few months?
We’re very happy to announce that we’ll have a new EP out on nov 11, called “Line Of Fire”. All three tracks have been on heavy rotation during our dj sets this summer. The title track “Line Of Fire” for example premiered at Creamfields UK with great success. The atmosphere of “Back To Monza” reminds us very much of the late night vibe at club Monza in Frankfurt in the early 2000’s, where the sound of the first Get Physical releases was defined. As well as in the dj sets, “Right On Track” will be featured in our upcoming Live shows.[/tab]
