Dj, produttore, art director, Pedro Winter aka Busy P è anche il boss della Ed Banger Records, una delle etichette che più ha contribuito alla diffusione su scala globale del French Touch. Manager dei Daft Punk per 12 anni, Pedro è passato dall’essere una delle figure chiave della scena underground parigina degli anni ’90, al gestire un’etichetta di successo e un’agenzia che nel roster include artisti del calibro di Sebastian, Mr. Oizo, Cassius e i Justice, per citarne alcuni. A Soundwall racconta del suo lavoro, della sua etichetta e della data imminente a Roma.
Ciao Pedro, è bello averti qui su Soundwall. Potresti presentarti brevemente?
Ciao ciao! Mia madre mi ha chiamato Pierre, i miei fratelli sud americani Pedro, i miei amici invece mi chiamano Busy P. Gestisco l’Ed Banger records dal 2003, qui a Parigi. Ho lavorato con i due robot Daft Punk dal 1996 al 2008, il miglior modo per imparare il mio lavoro.
Devi essere molto impegnato. Com’è la tua giornata tipo?
E’ bello che la gente fantastichi un pò… quindi diciamo che volo in jet privati e che per colazione mi vedo con Kanye West. No no, scherzo. In realtà vado in ufficio alle 10 e lavoro duro per offrirvi la migliore musica in circolazione. Non è per niente facile gestire un’etichetta al giorno d’oggi. La gente non compra più dischi, dobbiamo trovare sempre nuove idee per tenere alta l’attenzione.
In pratica gestisci un piccolo impero musicale. Com’è hai iniziato il tuo percorso?
Impero? Credimi, mi piacerebbe! Sono felice che le persone credano in noi. Al tempo misi sotto contratto Mr. Flash e Justice, gente che avevo incontrato per puro caso. Diciamo che ero lì al momento giusto.
Com’è stato fare da manager ai Daft Punk? Qualche episodio divertente da condividere con noi?
L’esperienza con i Daft Punk è stata sicuramente l’avvenimento più significativo per la mia carriera. Gli episodi divertenti però li tengo per il libro che un giorno scriverò.
Cos’è esattamente il “French touch”?
E’ un mix di funk americano, ritmi tedeschi, melodie inglesi e un senso dell’humour tipicamente francese.
Gestisci l’Ed Banger records. Come procede? Cosa mi dici del nuovo EP in uscita di Laurent Garnier?
Il mio obiettivo è quello di dimostrare che puoi pubblicare lavori di Mr. Oizo, Mr. Flash, Dj Mehdi e dei Justice allo stesso tempo. Certi sordi dicono che la musica che pubblichiamo non cambia mai. Avete mai ascoltato Mickey Moonlight? Krazy Baldhead? E ora Laurent Garnier? Questi artisti hanno stili molto diversi. L’Ed Banger records si occupa di musica moderna, semplicemente. Non rimaniamo fissi su un unico genere.
Che consiglio daresti a chi vuole aprire una label?
Lasciate perdere!
Dance music a parte, cosa ti piace ascoltare? E nel tuo background cosa troviamo?
Adoro la musica deprimente. Ad esempio, sono un grandissimo fan di Nick Drake. Da ragazzo ascoltavo un sacco di metal. Nella mia top 3 metto Metallica, Beastie Boys e Kraftwerk.
Sei stato uno dei primi a realizzare il potenziale offerto dalla rete. Come pensi che internet abbia cambiato il modo in cui la gente si approccia alla musica?
E’ un po’ presto per dirlo, ma credo che internet sia una buona cosa, anche se non vendiamo più dischi. Mi piace il fatto che si possano ascoltare e scoprire artisti che non si conoscevano prima, è facile e veloce. Ma allo stesso tempo non mi piace sapere che si può scaricare l’album dei Justice ancora prima che esca. Anche quello è facile e veloce!
Tra gli artisti del “L-Ektrica Spring Attitude” di Roma ci sei anche tu. Che cosa dobbiamo aspettarci?
In primo luogo, adoro i ragazzi del L-Ektrica. Davvero. Credo che siano solo 2 o 3 in tutto il mondo i promoter con cui ho lavorato sin dai primi giorni. A Roma sono gli unici per cui voglio suonare e non vedo l’ora. Il mio set sarà più dolce del solito, più housey, decisamente più soulful, probabilmente più particolare, ma sempre funky!
In conclusione, quali sono i tuoi programmi per il 2012.
Questo 2012 ha bisogno di essere riempito di amore. L’anno scorso non è stato facile per noi e perdere Mehdi è stato ancora più duro. Sono innamorato e sento il bisogno di dirglielo tutti i giorni. La vita è breve.

Hello Pedro, it’s good to have you on Soundwall. Could you please introduce yourself to those that might not be familiar with you?
Ciao Ciao! My mum called me Pierre, my south american brothers called me Pedro, my friends are calling me Busy P. I run Ed Banger records in Paris since 2003. I was working with the 2 Daft Punk robots from 1996 till 2008, it was the best place to learn my job.
You must be fully engaged. What’s your typical day like?
It’s good to let the fantasy in the head of people… so let’s pretend i fly in jets and i chill with Kanye West for breakfast. No no seriously, I go to my office at 10am and I work hard to give you the hottest music around. It’s not easy to run a label today. People don’t buy records anymore. So we need to find exciting ideas to get the attention.
You do run a music empire. How did it all start for you?
Empire? I wish! I’m glad people trust us. It started like an accident. I signed Mr. Flash and Justice who I both met by chance. Let’s say i was there at the right moment.
How was managing Daft Punk? Some funny moments to share with us?
Sharing the adventure with Daft Punk was certainly the most important thing that happened to me in my music business career. I keep the funny moments for the book I will write one day ahahah!
When you think to French music, the first thing that comes to your head is “French touch”. How would you describe it?
A mix of american funk, german rhythm, english melodies, and typical french sens of humour!
You run Ed Banger Records. How’s it going? What’s about the new Laurent Garnier Ep?
My goal is to prove you can release music from Mr. Oizo, Mr. Flash, Dj Mehdi and Justice at the same time. Some deaf people says we are releasing the same music all the time…Have your heard about Mickey Moonlight? Krazy Baldhead? and now Laurent Garnier? None of those artists are doing the same music. Ed Banger records is about modern music that’s it. Not stick to one sound.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start a label?
Do not put your fingers in it!
What kind of music do you like to listen to apart from dance music? And what’s about your background?
I love depressing music. I am a big fan of Nick Drake for example. I used to listen to metal most of the time when i was a teenager. Metallica is in my top 3 (with Beastie Boys and Kraftwerk)
You were one of the first to realize the potential offered by the internet. How do you think the web has changed the way people experience music?
It’ s too early to say, but i believe internet is a good thing even if i don’t sell records anymore… I like the fact you can listen and learn about artist you did not know before, it’s quick and easy. But at the same time I don’t like you can get the full Justice album before it’s out ahahaha it’s a also very quick and easy!
You’re playing at “L-Ektrica Spring Attitude” in Rome. Tell us a bit about what can we expect? What format do you prefer as a dj?
First, you know i love you L-Ektrica guys. Really. i think I have just 2 or 3 promoters in the world I’ve been working since day one. In Roma you are the only one I want to dj with. I can’t wait to play for you, it will be more mellow than what i used to do. More house, more soulfull, more weirdo maybe. Always funky!
What’s your plan for 2012?
2012 needs to be filled with love. 2011 was too hard for us, loosing Mehdi was the hardest. I am in love and I need to tell her everyday, life is short.
