Dopo essere stato frontman di una rock band da quasi 3 milioni di copie vendute, i BB MAK, e aver prestato la sua voce a gente come Tiesto, Chicane, Ferry Corsten, BT, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk e Benny Benassi, Christian Burns debutta con il suo primo album “Simple Modern Answers”, per dimostrare che, anche per i cantanti del mondo EDM i tempi sono maturi per fare i grandi passi.
Parlami delle tue radici musicali: come sei arrivato alla musica elettronica?
Beh, le mie radici musicali risalgono a quando ero bambino, i miei genitori erano entrambi musicisti, quindi sono cresciuto in una casa riempita dal sound di Beatles, Eagles, Steve Wonder, Electric Light Orchestra e altre grandi band di quei tempi. Sono arrivato all’elettronica quando sono venuto a contatto con Tiesto, sei anni fa.
Qual è stato il disco che ha fatto decollare la tua carriera?
La mia prima hit è stato un pezzo intitolato “Back Here”, e risale al 2001, quando facevo parte di una band chiamata BB MAK. In campo elettronico, invece, direi “In the dark”, con Tiesto.
Il tuo album di debutto “Simple Modern Answers” è uscito lo scorso 25 ottobre: non siamo abituati a vedere cantanti EDM fare degli album interi, forse perché potrebbe sembrare più una cosa da cantanti pop o rockstar. Tu cosa ne pensi?
Si, sono d’accordo, non ci sono molti cantanti in campo EDM che fanno album, ma credo che le cose cambieranno, da che l’EDM ha iniziato ad essere un genere di crossover, e nei fatti è ciò che ascolti in molte delle canzoni pop da Top40, in questo periodo, quindi credo che i tempi fossero maturi per rilasciare Simple Modern Answers. Mi piace sempre fare qualcosa di diverso!
C’è qualche altro cantante EDM o trance con cui ti piacerebbe duettare?
Beh, Jes era sulla mia lista! Amo la sua voce e sono stato molto contento di duettare con lei per l’album. “As we collide” è un pezzo che io e lei abbiamo scritto qualche anno fa, ed ero entusiasta quando Paul Oakenfold ha voluto produrlo. Sono veramente innamorato della voce di Jes. Forse ci sarà un duetto con qualcun altro, nel prossimo album…
Quale pensi sia stata la tua performance più memorabile?
Sono stato abbastanza fortunato da girare tutto il mondo con la mia musica, ma una performance che risalti, secondo me è stata quella di qualche mese fa all’Ultra Music Festival di Buenos Aires con Armin van Buuren, con 60.000 persone che cantavano insieme sotto la pioggia!
Hai mai pensato di tenere dei concerti da solista?
Si, attualmente sono in tour come solista, ho fatto qualche show per l’uscita di Simple Modern Answers in Russia e nel resto d’Europa. Spero di arrivare anche in Italia l’anno prossimo!
Tornando al tuo album, ho visto che è pieno di collaborazioni con nomi eccellenti: c’era qualcuno con cui volevi lavorare a tutti i costi? E alla fine, qual è stato il lavoro di squadra più interessante, per te?
Ho avuto degli ottimi produttori, per il disco, sono riuscito a spuntare un sacco di nomi dalla mia lista dei desideri. Amo lavorare con BT, facciamo molte cose insieme. Attenti al nuovo elettrizzante progetto su cui stiamo lavorando, si chiamerà “All Hail The Silence”…Think 1983.
Credi che un pezzo vocal trance si basi più sui suoni o sul testo?
Credo sia una giusta combinazione delle due cose a fare la differenza. Ad esempio a me piace trattare il tema della speranza, che si trova spesso nei pezzi trance.
Ci sono dei temi ricorrenti, nei testi di Simple Modern Answers?
Ci sono molti temi diversi che scorrono tra le liriche di Simple Modern Answers, canzoni che parlano di speranza, altre di disperazione, di fallimenti e di fortuna… Tutte le canzoni sono risposte alle domande che mi girano in testa.

Tell me about your musical roots: how did you get into electronic music?
Well my musical roots go back to when I was a child, my parents are both musicians so growing up my house was always full of the sounds of the Beatles, The Eagles, Stevie Wonder, ELO and other great bands from back in the day. I first got into Electronic music when Tiesto approached me to work on a track about 6 years ago!
Which was the record that made tour career kick off?
Well, my first hit was a track called ‘Back Here’ when I was part of a band called BB MAK, that was 2001. My first hit in the electronic world though was my track ‘In The Dark’ with Tiesto.
Your debut album ‘Simple Modern Answers’ is out from October 25th: we’re not used to see EDM singers releasing albums, maybe because it seems to be better suited to pop- and rockstars. What are your toughts about that?
I agree that you don’t see many EDM singers making albums, I think this will change as EDM is crossing over and actually is what you hear a lot on pop top 40 radio these days so I think the time is perfect to release ‘Simple Modern Answers’. I always like to do something a little different.
Is there any other edm/trance singer which you would like to duet with?
Well, Jes was on my list! I love her voice and so happy that we did a duet together on my album, the track ‘As We Collide’ is a track me and Jes wrote a few years ago and I was thrilled when Paul Oakenfold wanted to produce it for my record. I am in love with Jes’s voice. Maybe there will be another duet with somebody new on the next album.
Which one do you think was your most remarkable performance?
I have been lock enough to tour all over the world with my music, one performance that stands out for me was a few months ago in Buenos Aires with Armin van Buuren. 60,000 people singing along in the rain at Ultra Music Festival!
Have you ever tought about hosting your own solo concert?
Yes, I am currently touring on my own. Been doing a few Simple Modern Answers shows in Russia and europe. I hope to make it to Italy next year!
Talking about your album again, it’s full of collaborations with big names: Was there anyone in particular that you absolutely wanted to work with? And after all, which was the most exciting teamwork?
I have some amazing producers on the record, I ticked off a lot of my wish list on this one! I do love working with BT, we work a lot together. Look out for an exciting new project we are working on together called ‘All Hail The Silence’…Think 1983.
Do you think that a vocal trance record is more about the sounds or the lyrics?
I think its a mixture of the two, I like the theme of hope that often runs through a trance track.
Is there any recurring theme linking the lyrics of ‘Simple Modern Answers’?
There are many different themes running through the lyrics on Simple Modern Answers, songs of hope and songs of despair… Songs of fail and fortune. All the songs are answers to questions in my head at some point in time.
