Come vi avevamo detto, il Sankeys di Manchester ha chiuso il 6 Maggio. L’ultimo notte di uno dei club più apprezzati al mondo è stata una lunga maratona con ospiti segreti, artisti particolarmente amati dallo staff, ma sopratutto dai resident, colonne portanti del club. Per capire meglio cosa ha spinto David Vincent (art director del Sankeys) a decidere di puntare tutto su Ibiza, abbiamo deciso di scambiarci quattro chiacchiere.
Ciao David, prima di parlare di Sankeys e di tutto il resto, raccontaci la tua storia: come la musica e la club culture hanno cambiato la tua vita?
Per essere sinceri, la musica e la club culture stanno ancora cambiando la mia vita. Mi sento come se fossi in un viaggio che non è ancora finito. E Sankeys Ibiza è la prossima meta del mio percorso.
Sankeys, o meglio “Sankeys Soap”, nasce nel 1994, Venerdì “Bugged Out!” e il Sabato le leggende di oggi come Carl Cox, Daft Punk, Moby. Tu hai iniziato a lavorare per Sankeys nel 2000, cosa ci puoi dire di quei primi anni? Cosa ti ricordi con maggior malinconia?
Nel 2000 la scena club di Manchester era molto deprimente. Un pubblico pericoloso, i locali chiudevano, e un sacco di guai. Quindi ciò che è accaduto dopo è stato come iniziare dallo scratch, come guardare un foglio bianco e chiedersi – come posso riempirlo? Da dove dobbiamo iniziare? Ci approcciamo alla realtà dei fatti, con una sorta di innocenza per fare qualcosa di nuovo e fresco per la città. Siamo cresciuti organicamente. Per me è stato un onore lavorare con i miei idoli con regolarità, come Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Carl Cox, Frankie Knuckles – le vere leggende che suonando al Sankeys lo hanno reso ciò che oggi è. E’ stato un periodo meraviglioso. Probabilmente il mio ricordo preferito è stato vedere suonare Danny Tenaglia. Lui ha avuto un rapporto speciale con il club, e il suo primo set di 12 ore è stato qualcosa di veramente speciale, roba veramente dell’altro mondo. In quel momento tutti quelli che erano lì avevano capito che avevamo alzato di nuovo i nostri standard.
Noi italiani non sappiamo molto del Sankeys, o meglio prima del 2010 soltanto i più appassionati e i più feticisti sapevano che Manchester era la città della storica Haçienda da cui sono usciti i New Order e hanno debuttato alcune leggende viventi. Dal 2010 con il premio di DJ Mag, Sankeys diventa una realtà mondiale. Come dicevamo prima tu hai preso le redini del locale solo nel 2000, cosa è cambiato in questo club per divenire uno dei più famosi e apprezzati al mondo?
Il 2010 è stato veramente il nostro anno, in cui è stato ripagato il nostro duro lavoro. Abbiamo apportato 15 cambiamenti al locale, focalizzandoci su tutti i dettagli – il club di per sé era già fantastico e di livello mondiale, è stato per me un ulteriore lavoro di rifinitura. I dj già parlavano di quanto amassero il soffitto basso, quindi abbiamo perfezionato l’audio in consolle per migliorare l’esperienza di chiunque suonasse. Abbiamo valorizzato il locale per il nostro fantastico pubblico, migliorando qualsiasi cosa, così che il Sankeys in quell’anno fosse un club “fuoriclasse”. Se noi avessimo meritato di vincere quel premio, era nel 2010.
Nel 2011 nasce Sankeys Ibiza. In Italia, parlando dell’isla blanca, si dice che non è più la stessa e che probabilmente il suo spirito ormai è stato inquinato dal business. Dal comunicato apparso sulla pagina Facebook di Sankeys dichiari chiaramente che uno dei motivi per cui avete chiuso il club di Manchester è proprio la voglia di focalizzarvi su ibiza, la domanda è ovvia: Ibiza per soldi? Ibiza per lo spirito? o Ibiza per confrontarvi con i migliori? E soprattutto perché non l’idea opposta, chiudere Ibiza e rimanere a Manchester?
No, non è mai per i soldi. Ho sempre reinvestito tutto nel Sankeys per renderlo migliore, per rendere più intensa l’esperienza di tutti, dalla prospettiva dei clubbers e per tutti gli artisti che si sono esibiti live o in dj set. Ciò che ho capito negli ultimi due anni è che è impossibile gestire due club come io vorrei – dovrei esserci per fare in modo che tutto vada perfettamente. Io posso essere in un solo luogo. Ed è anche vitale che io abbia con me il mio team, ed è il motivo per cui ho preso la decisione di portare tutti con me a Ibiza per la nostra terza stagione. Sankyes è stato aperto ogni settimana a Manchester per 13 anni – ha fatto il suo tempo, se così posso dire. E non mi fraintendere, io ho avuto un’esperienza fantastica; siamo stati votati come il miglior club al mondo, siamo stati riconosciuti da un museo per i nostri sforzi, abbiamo creato qualcosa di veramente speciale. Ma gestire entrambi i club, significa avere anche il doppio della fatica, quindi io e il mio team ci siamo trasferiti ad Ibiza per avere un approccio più completo e professionale.
Parlando di musica in senso stretto, la qualità delle release è da qualche anno in netto calo, un ritorno alle hit di un tempo e ai suoni del lontano passato ne sono il chiaro segnale. Tu che hai vissuto da dietro le quinte l’evolversi della musica elettronica cosa pensi della scena musicale moderna? Dove arriveremo? Che succederà? Qual è lo step successivo?
L’attuale scena musicale mondiale si muove ad un ritmo velocissimo. Oggi giorno tutti possono produrre, lo studio di un producer è il suo laptop, quindi si: posso dire che la qualità si è abbassata perché tutti possono produrre la propria musica. Comunque, qualcuno come Mylo ad esempio avrebbe mai ottenuto il suo successo, avendo iniziato con il suo laptop? Questa è la velocità delle cose ed è differente – ora non c’è veramente un disco dell’estate, alcune lo sono per qualche settimana, se ci riescono!
Il Sankeys dai tempi di Manchester ha un rapporto particolare con Ibiza, durante un party Danny Tenaglia prese il microfono per paragonarlo ad un mix tra Studio 54 e WMC e te in una recente intervista hai affermato che la naturale casa di Danny è il Sankeys. Da dove nasce questo feeling particolare?
Questo feeling particolare scaturisce dal modo in cui noi curiamo e creiamo la magia nel dancefloor, dalla programmazione alla location in se. Il contatto con il pubblico è vitale, dal dj alle persone al club stesso. Riusciamo a creare atmosfere pazzesche e fare feste di cui le persone ancora parlano settimane dopo.
Per concludere, cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare in questa stagione di Sankeys Ibiza e poi…Sankeys Manchester riaprirà? Non possiamo credere che chiuderà, mancherà a tante, troppe persone.
Nel nostro primo anno ad Ibiza, era tutto sbagliato. L’anno scorso, forse 50 cose erano sbagliate. E quest’anno sta andando tutto bene! Abbiamo imparato moltissimo negli ultimi due anni e ora sento che Sankeys Ibiza sta diventando qualcosa di veramente speciale. Credo che le persone che non sono ancora venute avranno un grosso shock quando entreranno, saranno stupite. Mi chiedo sempre se oggi esista un club musicalmente migliore del Sankeys Ibiza. E’ ciò che mi guida per renderlo il miglior club al mondo. Abbiamo una ottima programmazione settimanale, dal ViVa Warrios, all’Hypercolour, passando per il party di Solomun, fino al Carnival. Sento che il 2013 sarà il nostro anno ad Ibiza. Per quanto riguarda il Sankeys di Manchester, si senza dubbio chiuderemo in maniera definitiva.

As we mentioned, Sankeys in Manchester closed on the 6th of May. The last night of one of the most appreciated clubs in the world was a very long show with secret guests, big favourites of the crew, but most of all resident djs, the pillars of the club. To better understand what led David Vincent (Sankeys art director) to decide to bet everything on Ibiza, we thought of having a small chat with him.
Hi David, before starting with Sankeys and the rest, tell us your story: how have music and the club culture changed your life?
To be honest with you, music and club culture is still changing my life. I feel I am on a journey and it hasn’t stopped yet. And Sankeys Ibiza is the next step of the journey for me.
Sankeys, or actually “Sankeys Soap”, begins in 1994 with “Bugged Out!” on Fridays and on Saturdays legends such as Carl Cox, Daft Punk, Moby. You have started to work with Sankeys in 2000. What can you tell us about those first years? What are your best memories?
In 2000 it was a very depressed club scene in Manchester. Lots of gangs, venues getting shut down, endless trouble. So what happened then was basically starting from scratch, like looking at a blank sheet of paper and asking – how are we going to fill this? Where do we start? It was kind of innocent really, the way we approached it, doing something fresh in the city. We grew organically. For me it was such an honour to work with my idols on a regular basis, like Hawtin, Sasha, Carl Cox, Frankie Knuckles – the really legendary people who came to play at Sankeys loads. It was an amazing time. Probably my favourite memory is Tenaglia playing. He has got a special relationship with the club, and his first 12-hour set was truly something special, from another world really. Anyone who was there then knew we had re-set everything, we had raised the bar again.
Italians don’t know a lot about Sankeys, or actually, before 2010, only the most passionate and fetishists (clubbers?!) knew that Manchester was the hometown of the historic New Order-sponsored Haçienda where living legends made their debut. With the 2010 Dj Mag prize, Sankeys became well-known to the whole world.
As we mentioned earlier, you took charge of the club only in 2000, what were the changes that made it into one of the most famous and appreciated clubs in the world?
2010 really was our year, when all of the hard work paid off. We made 15 changes to the venue which really was focusing on all of the detail – the venue itself was already fantastic and world-class, it was for me about refining it all further. DJs already spoke about how they loved the low ceiling, so we improved the booth for the experience of everyone playing. We improved the venue for our amazing crowd, enhancing everything so Sankeys was that year a true world-beater. If ever we deserved to win that award, it was 2010.
In 2011 Sankeys Ibiza saw the light. In Italy many say that the Isla Blanca is not the same anymore and that probably its spirit has been spoiled by business. In the statement on Sankeys Facebook page you clearly say that one of the reasons why you decided to close the Manchester club is because you want to focus on Ibiza. An obvious question arises: Ibiza because of the money, of its spirit or because you want to compete with the best? And, most of all, why not the opposite, closing down Ibiza and keeping Manchester?
No, it is not or has ever been about the money. I have always ploughed everything back into Sankeys to make it better, to improve everyone’s experience, from the clubbers’ perspective and for all of the DJs and live acts. What I have learnt during the last couple of years is that it is impossible to run two clubs at the same time the way I want to – which is me being present to ensure everything runs perfectly. I can only be in one place. And also it’s vital I have my team around me too, which is why I have made this decision, to bring everyone with me to Ibiza for our third season there. Sankeys has been running weekly in Manchester for 13 years – I have done my time, if you like. And don’t get me wrong, I have had an amazing time too; we have been voted the World’s Best Club, been recognised by a musuem for our efforts, we have created something really special here. But running both clubs at the same time meant both were suffering too, so this is why I and the production team are all going to Ibiza to approach it fully.
Talking strictly about music, the quality of releases has been declining in the past few years, demonstrated by a return to the hits and sounds of a long-gone past. You have lived the evolution of electronic music behind the scenes. What do you think of today’s musical scene? Where are we heading? What will happen? What is the next step?
The current music world moves at such a fast pace. These days everyone can produce, people’s studios are their laptops, so yes I would say the quality has declined because everyone can make music. However, would someone like Mylo for example ever gotten his break, as he made his debut on a computer? It’s the speed that everything goes at which is different – now you don’t really have “tunes of the summer,” they only last for a few weeks – if that!
Sankeys has always had a special relationship with Ibiza. Once in a party Danny Tenaglia grabbed the mic and compared it to a mix between Studio 54 and WMC, and you stated in a recent interview that Danny’s home is Sankeys. Where does this special feeling come from?
The special feeling comes from the way we curate and create musical magic on the dance floor, from the programming to the venue itself. The connection to the crowd is vital, from the DJ to the people to the venue itself. We create explosive atmospheres and make parties that people talk about weeks after.
Finally, what should we expect from Sankeys Ibiza in this season? and…Sankeys Manchester will ever re-open? We can’t believe it’s going to close, will be surely missed by many.
In our first year in Ibiza, everything went wrong. Then last year, maybe 50 things went wrong. And this year – everything is going to be right! We have learnt so much in the last two years that I now feel Sankeys Ibiza is going to be something really special. I think people who have not yet been are going to be in for a huge shock – they will be amazed. I always ask myself is there a better club musically right now than Sankeys Ibiza? This is what drives me, to make it the best club in the world here. We have got a brilliant weekly schedule, everything from VIVa Warriors to Hypercolour to Carnival to Solomun’s parties. I really feel 2013 is going to be our year in Ibiza. As for Manchester, I am closing the club indefinitely.
