[tab title=”Italiano”]Vinili, label, macchine analogiche, club culture e Parigi sono stati solo alcuni dei tanti argomenti affrontati in questa intervista in compagnia di Djebali. Dj, produttore e label owner, è sicuramente uno degli artisti più interessanti della scena house francese del momento. Grazie al suo stile e alla sua musica Djebali è anche uno dei dj resident dello storico Rex Club con il suo party “Ideal Juice”. Dopo le varie esperienze vissute negli Stati Uniti e non solo, torna finalmente in Italia, il 12 Dicembre all’Origami Club di Venezia per il Nordik showcase.
Prima di iniziare però sono curioso di sapere dove sei in questo momento e cosa stai facendo. Lavori anche durante il tuo tempo libero o ogni tanto ti dedichi alle altre tue passioni?
Sono seduto nel mio nuovo studio a Parigi, e sto lavorando sulle nuove patch. Mi dedico a fare e a scovare nuova musica! Ho diverse passioni, ma ad essere onesto non ho (o non prendo) il tempo per fare altro. Con le date durante il fine settimana e la settimana trascorsa in studio è piuttosto difficile trovare del tempo libero. Comunque mi piace anche trascorrere del tempo con i miei amici e andare mangiare fuori per esempio, oppure farmi un drink dopo una lunga sessione di studio. Ero abituato a fare un sacco di sport da studente, ma erano 10 anni fa.
Non molto tempo fa sei stato in tour anche negli USA. E’ stata la tua prima volta li come dj? Com’è stata questa esperienza e com’è stato per te suonare li?
Ci ho suonato per la prima volta alcuni anni fa durante la settimana della WMC, ma nel Gennaio scorso ho ottenuto il mio visto di lavoro per gli Stati Uniti. Da quel momento ho già preso parte a quattro tour, tra cui in città come Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago così come in Messico, a Montreal e a Toronto. L’ultimo è durato un’intera settimana, mi è piaciuto tantissimo. Ho avuto il tempo di visitare i negozi di dischi in ogni città e sentire l’atmosfera di ognuno, troppo! Sono sempre stupito quando passo del tempo lì. Quando ero più giovane, non avrei mai immaginato che un giorno sarei stato in tour negli Stati Uniti. Per quanto riguarda il modo di fare festa sono rimasto sorpreso di trovare una folla eccellente con un sacco di energia. Anche come il mercoledì a Los Angeles o la domenica e il lunedì a New York. Non me lo sarei mai aspettato! Credo che l’interesse per la musica elettronica underground negli Stati Uniti stia diventando sempre più grande e ho avuto modo di sentirlo nei club.
Dal 2011 hai lanciato la tua label ( djebali ), che ha lati diversi come ( djebali ) reworks e ( djebali ) present. Quali sono le differenze principali tra di loro e perché hai deciso di dare più sfaccettature alla tua etichetta?
In realtà ho iniziato ( djebali ) per rilasciare la mia musica quando voglio e, ovviamente, è per questo che l’ho chiamata come me. Ho iniziato a ricevere un sacco di demo prima di lanciare questa etichetta, ma non ero convinto fino a quando non ho ricevuto un demo da Mr KS che ho considerato di pubblicare musica di altre persone. Ho suonato un sacco di tracce dal demo e, dopo l’estate 2013, gli ho chiesto se aveva ancora liberi quei brani, mi rispose di si e così ho deciso di creare ( djebali ) present per fare uscire le nuove tracce dai nuovi arrivati o dai nuovi progetti. Mentre tutto funzionava perfettamente, nel 2014 ho deciso di ampliare la mia collezione di etichette chiedendo ad amici nel settore di fare dei remix del mio piccolo catalogo e così è nata ( djebali ) reworks. Ora ho release da artisti come The Mole & Hreno, Christian Burkhardt, Hold Youth, Ben Vedren, John Dimas, Livio & Roby.
Sulla tua label fai uscire musica solo in vinile, una scelta molto coraggiosa ma che fanno le etichette di qualità. Tu perché hai fatto questa scelta da subito? All’inizio non c’è il rischio di passare inosservati nella massa di tracce che esce oggigiorno?
Non fare il vinile non era un’opzione! Sono stato innamorato del vinile da quando ho iniziato a comprarlo 17 anni fa. E’ stato super rischioso all’inizio perché il vinile non era popolare nel momento in cui ho lanciato l’etichetta; vendere 300 copie era un sogno per un sacco di label. Così ( djebali ) è stato più di un progetto di una vera e propria etichetta, ho voluto mantenere tutto crudo (come l’art work, semplice). Ho voluto che fosse esclusiva, ho deciso di non fare release in digitale e sono davvero grato per tutto il supporto che ho avuto fin dall’inizio da parte delle persone che hanno acquistato i miei dischi e che hanno sostenuto l’etichetta. Senza di loro non avrei potuto continuare a farlo.
Nel 2011 hai anche suonato per la prima volta ad Ibiza, precisamente al DC10 per il Circoloco dove sei stato anche questa estate. Com’è suonare li? E’ veramente il club perfetto dove ogni dj può fare quello che vuole?
Lo è! In realtà la prima volta provi a lavorare sul tuo set in modo che si adatti perfettamente al club, ma più si suona e più ci si rende conto che si può suonare quello che vuoi, se è coerente! Naturalmente bisogna adattarsi al momento della giornata e a seconda della posizione (nel giardino, nella terrazza o nella sala principale), ma si ha la libertà di prendere la folla dove si vuole, tutti sono lì per lo stesso obiettivo; il party e la musica!
Tu abiti a Parigi e qualche giorno prima del tragico evento della notte del 13 Novembre avevo intenzione di chiederti com’è vivere li per un giovane artista. Ti faccio lo stesso questa domanda ma ti chiedo anche cosa è cambiato nel tuo stato d’animo e cosa provi.
Quello che è successo è stato molto triste e tragico. Io ero a Parigi quel giorno e dovevo volare il giorno dopo. Mi chiedevo se ero in grado di viaggiare e suonare, ma ho deciso di farlo, pensando alle vittime. Di sicuro non è stato il mio miglior set, ma ho suonato con il cuore. Mi sono reso conto quella notte che io appartengo al club e alla club culture, e nessuno mi terrà lontano da quello! All’aeroporto avevo paura di tensioni tra le persone e la sicurezza ma sono rimasto sorpreso di vedere tutti essere davvero gentili e solidali! Questo è veramente importante quando si verificano questo tipo di tragedie; stare insieme, aiutandosi l’un l’altro ed essere uniti.
Oltre al DC10 ad Ibiza, hai anche un rapporto speciale con un club della tua città, il Rex, dove suoni regolarmente e hai una serata dedicata a te. Com’è nato questo rapporto e da cosa sono caratterizzate le serate “Ideal Juice”?
Ho suonato per il Rex Club per molto tempo. Il Rex Club sostiene sempre le nuove generazioni e fa anche dei collegamenti con artisti affermati. Mi ricordo che andavo lì quasi ogni fine settimana quando ero più giovane. La mia residenza, Ideal Juice, è in corso da circa due anni e non potrei essere più felice di farla al Rex Club. 26 anni di musica elettronica di qualità, è un grandissimo onore poter spingere i dischi per loro regolarmente! Ai miei party cerco di invitare gli artisti che amo, amici, live acts, non c’è alcuna restrizione. Quando la musica è buona, hai il succo ideale eheh.
Come nasce un disco di Djebali? Voglio dire, hai un mood particolare quando sei in studio? Inoltre hai anche alcuni strumenti che usi spesso per le tue produzioni?
Beh, in realtà non ho un particolare “mood per fare musica”. Io lavoro in qualsiasi stato d’animo mi trovo in quel momento. Il processo fondamentalmente è sempre lo stesso: ho un MPC3000, che uso per controllare tutti i miei sintetizzatori e drum macchine (SH101, SH09, Juno 60, TR-909, MPC2000xl per citarne alcuni). Uso anche un sacco di cose esterne come reverberi, delay, computer e FX. Io uso il computer proprio come un registratore a dire il vero, e per fare alcuni ritocchi sull’edit.
Il tuo ultimo lavoro sulla tua etichetta è ( djebali 09 ), hai già in cantiere la prossima uscita? A cosa stai lavorando?
Sì, sono già sul numero 10 che tra non molto sarà finito. Ho anche ultimato alcuni remix che usciranno presto. Troverete sulla mia ( djebali ) una nuova traccia di Premiesku chiamata “In My Chek” con il mio remix sul lato B, c’è anche un remix per Sebo K sulla sua nuova etichetta vinyl-only Scenario, e un remix che ho appena finito per Alex Arnoult su NoFitState, l’etichetta di Geddes. Sono ancora in via di sviluppo anche la serie reworks (con remix da Mandar, Tuccillo, Chez Damier, Alci, Cab Drivers) e anche i ( djebali ) present! Beccatevi l’ultima che è stata appena rilasciata pochi giorni fa, è da Rhythm&Soul ed è molto bella.

[tab title=”English”]Vinyl, label, analog machines, club culture and Paris are just some of the many topics covered in this interview with Djebali. DJ, producer and label owner, is definitely one of the most interesting artists of the French house scene of the moment. Thanks to his style in and to his music Djebali is also one of the resident dj of the historic Rex Club with his party “Ideal Juice”. After the experiences in the United States and elsewhere, he finally comes back in Italy, on December 12 at Origami Club in Venice for the Nordik showcase.
Before starting I’m curious to know where are you right now and what are you doing. Do you work also during your free time or sometimes you dedicate yourself to your other passions?
I am sitting in my new studio in Paris, working on re-patching everything. I dedicate me to making, and digging for music! I have different passions but to be honest I don’t have (or don’t take) the time to do anything else. With gigs during the weekend and spending the week in the studio, it’s pretty hard to find free time. I would say I love to spend time hanging out with my friends and eating at restaurants for example, or having a quick drink after a long studio session. I used to do a lot of sports as a student but that was 10 years ago.
Not long ago you were on tour in the US. Was it your first time there as dj? How was this experience and how was it for you to play there?
I played there for the first time a few years ago during WMC week but last January I got my working visa for the US. So since then, I’ve already taken part in four tours, including cities like Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago as well as Mexico, Montreal and Toronto. The last one was a entire week, I just loved it. I had time to visit record shops in every city and feel the atmosphere of each one, too! I am always amazed when I spend time there. When I was young, I could never have imagined that one day I’d tour in US. Party-wise, I was surprised to find a super crowd with a lot of energy. Even on a Wednesday in LA or a Sunday and Monday in NYC. I never expected that! I think the following for underground electronic music in the US is getting bigger and bigger and I was able to feel it in the clubs.
Since 2011 you launched your own label ( djebali ), which has different sides like ( Djebali ) reworks and ( djebali ) present. What are the main differences between them and why you decided to give more facets to your label?
Actually I started ( djebali ) to release my own music when I want and obviously that’s why I named it after myself. I started to receive a lot of demos before launching that label but I wasn’t convinced until I got a demo from Mr KS that I considered releasing other people’s music. I played a lot of the tracks from this demo and, after summer 2013, I asked him if he’d signed the tracks, he said he had not so I decided to create ( djebali ) presents to release tracks by newcomers or new projects. As everything was working great, in 2014 I decided to expand my collection of labels asking friends in the industry doing remixes of my little back catalogue and so ( djebali ) reworks was born. I’ve now releases from artists like The Mole & Hreno, Christian Burkhardt, Hold Youth, Ben Vedren, John Dimas, Livio & Roby.
On your label you release music on vinyl only, a very brave choice, that quality labels do. Why have you did this choice from the beginning? At first isn’t there the risk of going unnoticed in the mass of tracks coming out today?
Not doing vinyl wasn’t an option! I’ve been in love with vinyl since I started to buy it 17 years ago. It was super risky at first because vinyl wasn’t popular at all around the time when I launched the label; selling 300 copies was a dream for a lot of labels. As ( djebali ) was more a project than a proper label, I wanted to keep it raw (as the artwork is, simple). So I wanted it to be exclusive, I decided not to release it digitally and I am truly thankful for all the support I’ve had since the beginning from people who have bought my records and supported the label. Without them I couldn’t have continued doing it.
In 2011 you also played for the first time in Ibiza, precisely at DC10 for Circoloco where you have been also this summer. How do it feel to play there? Is it really the perfect club where every dj can do whatever wants?
It is! Actually the first time you try to work your set so it fits perfectly to the club, but the more you play the more you realize you can play what you want, if it’s coherent! Of course you adapt to the time of day and the location (the garden, the terrace or main room) but you have the freedom to take the crowd wherever you want, everybody is there for the same goal; the party and the music!
You live in Paris and a few days before the tragic events of the night of November 13 I’d liked to ask you how is living in Paris for a young artist. I’ll make you the same question but I also ask you what has changed in your mood and how do you feel.
What happened was very sad and tragic. I was actually in Paris that day and had to fly the next day. I was wondering if I was able to travel and play but I decided to do it and play, thinking of the victims. For sure it wasn’t my best set but I played from the heart. I realise that night that I belong to clubs and club culture, and nobody will keep me away from that! At the airport I was afraid of tensions between people and security and I was surprised to see everyone being really kind and united! This is truly important when this kind of tragedy occurs; staying together, helping one another and being united.
Besides to the DC10 in Ibiza, you also have a special relation with a club in your city, the Rex, where you play regularly and have a party dedicated to you. How was born this relationship and which are characteristics of “Ideal Juice” parties?
I’ve been playing for Rex Club for a very long time now. Rex Club always support the new generations and make connections with established artists, too. I remember going there almost every weekend when I was young. My residency, Ideal Juice, has been going for about two years now and I couldn’t be more happy to do it at Rex Club. 26 years of quality electronic music, what an honour to be able to spin their regularly! At my parties, I try to invite the artists I love, friends, live acts, there is no restriction. When the music is good, you’ve got the ideal juice eheh.
How a Djebali record born? I mean, have you a particular mood when you’re in the studio? Have you also some machines that you use frequently for your productions?
Well actually I don’t have a particular “music making mood”. I just work in whatever mood I am in at that moment. The process is basically always the same: I have a MPC3000, which I use to control all my synths and drums machines (SH 101, SH09, Juno 60, TR-909, MPC2000xl to name a few). I use also a lot of external gear like reverb, delays, comp and FX. I use the computer just as a recorder actually, and to make some final touches on the edit.
Your last work on your label is ( djebali 09 ), are you already preparing the next issue? What are you working?
Yes I am already on number 10 and that will be finished soon. I’ve also finished some remixes that will be out soon. You’ll find on my ( djebali ) imprint, a new Premiesku track called “In My Chek” with my remix on B side, there is also a remix for Sebo K on his new vinyl-only label Scenario, and a remix I just finished for Alex Arnoult on NoFitState, Geddes’ label. I am still also developing the reworks series (with remixes coming by Mandar, Tuccillo, Chez Damier, Alci, Cab Drivers) and also the ( djebali ) present! Check out the latest one, which was just released a few days ago, it’s by Rhythm&Soul and it’s so good.
