Difficilmente capita di fare quattro chiacchiere con coloro i quali hanno realmente cambiato le regole del gioco in termini di festival nel campo della musica elettronica. Robin Ebinger è uno di questi. Co-fondatore di Cosmopop e di eventi celeberrimi, primo su tutti Time Warp (ma anche Love Family Park, SEMF e molti altri) ci ha dedicato un po’ del suo tempo per raccontarci la sua storia. Dai primi eventi nella piccola Ludwigshafen fino alla notorietà e alla rapida espansione del suo brand in tutta Europa. Trovare il giusto connubio fra infrastrutture sempre più all’avanguardia, una proposta musicale fresca e poliedrica ed un gruppo di lavoro determinato e coeso è il segreto grazie al quale i ragazzi di Cosmopop sono ancora oggi sulla cresta dell’onda.
Sappiamo che sei una delle menti dietro il leggendario Time Warp, quello che non sappiamo è che sei arrivato in contatto con il mondo dell’intrattenimento notturno. Quali sono stati gli eventi che ti hanno portato ad entrare in questo affascinante ecosistema?
Permettimi di usare questa citazione “music was my first love” perciò quando ho avuto il mio primo contatto con la musica elettronica nei primi anni ’90 sono rimasto totalmente affascinato dall’energia di questo nuovo sound. La passione per l’elettronica ha portato me e il mio partner Steffen a cominciare ad organizzare eventi.
Come è nato il format Time Warp? Che tipo di festa aveva in mente lo staff quando è stato concepito?
A dirla tutta è stato inventato e creato dal mio socio Steffen Charles quando ancora eravamo in competizione (anche se comunque siamo sempre stati amici). Time Warp ha avuto inizio in un vecchio magazzino a Ludwigshafen, una cittadina vicina a Mannheim. Steffen avviò l’evento insieme a Michael Hock, che è ancora oggi il nostro production manager. La primissima line up includeva nomi come Speedy J, Robert Armani, Laurent Garnier… Nel 1995 arrivarono Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox e Josh Wink e ci spostammo nella Maimarkthalle a Mannheim, che è tuttora la nostra base operativa. E’ curioso come molti di questi nomi siano rimasti sui nostri cartelloni fin da allora.
Come si è evoluto poi negli anni successivi? Vi aspettavate tutto questo successo?
Quando abbiamo cominciato tutto questo non era di certo fatto per la fama. Abbiamo fatto quello che ci sembrava giusto. Guidati dalla passione per la musica elettronica e dall’idea di dare alle persone e agli artisti un’esperienza migliore possibile immersi in un’atmosfera speciale. Durante i primi 10 anni, Time Warp è stato organizzato anche in molte altre città tedesche e dal 2000 in poi ci siamo definitivamente stabiliti alla Maimarkthalle a Mannheim. Nel 2005 abbiamo organizzato i nostri primi eventi all’estero a Praga e Vienna, seguiti poi da quelli olandesi a partire dal 2008. L’ultimo arrivato è stata l’Italia a partire dal 2011. Oggi, Time Warp è diventato un brand internazionale riconosciuto per la sua autentica esperienza di divertimento e dove le persone possono rimanere ispirate e conoscere persone da tutto il mondo. Oltretutto, nonostante il festival abbia avuto molto successo e sia cresciuto altrettanto in fretta, ci piace continuare a considerarci come un evento underground.
Come hai appena detto, dal 2000 in poi la Mainmarkthalle di Mannheim è diventata la casa ufficiale del Time Warp, attirando ogni anno decine di migliaia di visitatori da tutta Europa. Qual è il momento vissuto là dentro che ricordi con maggior piacere?
Ogni edizione ha avuto i suoi momenti indimenticabili e porta con se grandi ricordi. Ogni volta che si è concluso un evento, il team inizia già a pensare a quello seguente. Direi che il momento migliore resta quando ogni anno apriamo i nostri cancelli e si possono vedere tutte quelle persone entusiaste provenienti da ogni angolo del globo. In quell’attimo ti rendi conto di quante persone hanno deciso di intraprendere un viaggio (spesso anche lungo) solo per condividere quell’esperienza. Time Warp è qualcosa che non si può descrivere… bisogna solo andarci per poter capire.
Come mai avete deciso di creare Time Warp proprio a Mannheim invece che, per dirne una, Berlino? Avete preferito valorizzare il vostro territorio?
Non è stata in realtà una decisione presa per andare contro Berlino o altri posti. Mannheim è stata la città dove siamo cresciuti musicalmente e dove abbiamo iniziato ad organizzare eventi. Perciò ci è sembrato naturale cominciare il tutto in quel luogo.
A circa 10 anni dalla prima edizione, avete iniziato ad organizzare degli eventi lontano dalla Germania, prima a Praga e poi a Vienna. Come andarono quegli esperimenti?
Sono state entrambe esperienze interessanti. L’edizione di Praga è stata un successo e avevamo intenzione di continuare a svolgere l’evento lì. Purtroppo l’anno seguente la location dove è stata organizzata la festa è stata distrutta da un incendio e i nostri partner in Repubblica Ceca si sono divisi. Per questo motivo non abbiamo più fatto nulla da quelle parti. Invece Vienna è stato molto difficile perché il mercato da quelle parti non era giusto per noi e per la proposta musicale che Time Warp portava con se.
Dopo quegli esperimenti avete creato dei festival satellite stabili prima in Olanda e poi in Italia. Volevate accontentare i vostri ospiti più fedeli regalandogli un pezzo di Time Warp vicino a casa?
Si, è stata quella la ragione principale. Gli olandesi sono sempre stati una grossa fetta del pubblico di Time Warp. Anche gli italiani hanno sempre partecipato fin dalla prima edizione. I nostri amici italiani sono la nostra più grande fonte di affluenza dopo i tedeschi. E inoltre crediamo che siano gli ospiti più entusiasti e fedeli, in poche parole il pubblico che tutti sognerebbero. Era un passo logico andare in Italia e proporre un evento per questa gente fantastica. Milano ha sempre avuto un fascino particolare: è la città della moda e delle mode, perciò credevamo che era giusto che Time Warp avesse luogo lì. Ad oggi abbiamo ricevuto una calda accoglienza e ci piace lavorare con così tanta brava gente. Ci ha fatto molto piacere che molti nell’ambiente come i promoter, gli opinionisti e i media ci abbiano supportati fin dal nostro primo anno in Italia. Senza dimenticare il ruolo fondamentale dei nostri partner come Randy di RND, Berit di BArtist e Luca di Modart.
E proprio a proposito di questo, fuori dagli schemi dei comunicati stampa puoi dirci cos’è successo con il Time Warp Italy per il 2013? Quali sono i motivi alla base del suo annullamento e del rinvio al 2014? Rischia di esserci un cambio di location?
Semplicemente non abbiamo trovato una data che facesse al nostro caso in Fiera e che ci permettesse di avere tutti i nostri artisti e staff al completo. Torneremo nel 2014 per il nostro grande ventesimo anniversario. Per quelli che non hanno voglia di attendere, ci sarà il Time Warp Holland il 7 Dicembre allo Jaarbeurs ad Utrecht (e ci saremo anche noi di Soundwall, ndr). Ci porteremo dietro parecchie idee già sperimentate nell’ultima edizione del Time Warp di Mannheim.
Dopo anni di grandi successi, l’anno prossimo Time Warp celebrerà i suoi primi 20 anni. Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare per festeggiare questo lieto evento?
Abbiamo appena concluso il design del poster per il ventesimo anniversario. Il team creativo sta lavorando su diverse idee come ad esempio degli speciali video-episodi ed anche a un documentario. Inoltre il nostro team di produzione è alle prese con l’assetto degli stage per il prossimo anno. Preparatevi a qualcosa di veramente speciale.
Nel 2003 insieme a Steffen Charles hai fondato Cosmopop, l’organizzazione che gestisce Time Warp ed altri festival come il Love Family Park e il SEMF a Stoccarda, senza contare alcuni club storici come il Loft e l’Hafen49. Come è nata l’organizzazione e come si è sviluppata nel corso degli anni?
Io e Steffen siamo amici fin dai primi anni ’90. Al tempo lui fondò Time Warp e io stavo gestendo la mia serie di eventi. Ci siamo sempre aiutati a vicenda. Dopo che ho terminato gli studi abbiamo deciso di unire le forze e di creare una nuova compagnia. Quello era il 2003… cavolo come vola il tempo. All’inizio ad occuparci di tutto c’eravamo solo io, Steffen, un impiegato full-time e due part-time. In poche parole abbiamo costruito questa azienda partendo da zero. Il 2003 ed il 2004 sono stati anni piuttosto duri per quel che mi riguarda. La techno ha subito grandi cambiamenti dopo il primo boom commerciale a cavallo tra i ’90 e i 2000. La nostra strategia è sempre stata quella di investire sui nostri brand, sulla qualità degli eventi (senza compromessi) e sul far conoscere il nostro marchio internazionalmente. Al di là dei nostri festival, abbiamo iniziato ad aiutare un sacco di artisti con i loro show e nel frattempo abbiamo integrato una profonda conoscenza di ciò che essi hanno bisogno. Un’altra cosa molto importante per Cosmopop è di creare un gruppo forte e di continuare a svilupparlo, senza dimenticare di investire nelle infrastrutture.
Proprio il Love Family Park è diventato ormai un appuntamento fisso nell’estate europea. Quest’anno avete aperto definitivamente le porte anche alle sonorità un po’ più scure, dedicando uno stage intero alla techno. Siete soddisfatti del risultato ottenuto?
Si, siamo soddisfatti del fatto di aver arricchito la proposta musicale del Love Family Park. I nostri visitatori l’hanno molto apprezzato. Il LFP ha luogo da ormai 18 anni, per mantenere la sua attrattiva e vincere la concorrenza cerchiamo di di svilupparlo costantemente stando ben attenti a non comprometterne l’essenza che da sempre lo caratterizza. Come per il Time Warp, cerchiamo sempre di spingerci oltre i nostri limiti: TechNOLIMITS!
Quest’anno avete organizzato il Sonus Festival in Croazia, andando a coprire una zona (quella di Pag) in cui sono presenti moltissimi festival durante l’estate. Che cosa rende Sonus maggiormente degno di essere visitato rispetto agli altri?
In collaborazione col nostro parner croato, Dalle, abbiamo fatto in modo di portare una nuova proposta musicale sull’isola di Pag. Molte persone facenti parte della scena internazionale sono intervenute. Diversi artisti sono venuti prima o se ne sono andati dopo rispetto a quando dovevano suonare. Tutto questo ha fatto si che si creasse una grande atmosfera famigliare, che sono sicuro tutti avranno avvertito.
Cosa riserva il futuro a Cosmopop? C’è qualche progetto in cantiere che vi andrebbe di condividere con i nostri lettori?
Siamo costantemente al lavoro per trovare nuove idee e nuovi progetti. Nel 2014 farà la sua comparsa un nuovo festival: Sea You, organizzato al Tunisee a Friburgo, in Germania. Si tratterà di un open air della durata di tre giorni organizzato sul lago. Uno stage sarà direttamente sulla riva, così che la gente possa fare il bagno mentre balla. Vi consiglio di tenere fisso lo sguardo su questo evento!

It’s not always easy to have a chat with those who have actually changed the rules of the game in terms of festivals in electronic music’s environment. Robin Ebinger is one of those. Co-founder of Cosmopop and man in charge of famous events, first of all Time Warp (but also Love Family Park, SEMF and many others) Robin has spent a bit of his time to tell us his story. From the early events in the small Ludwigshafen’s venues up to the reputation gained nowdays passing through the rapid expansion of his brand throughout Europe. Finding the right match between increasingly more advanced infrastructures, an always renovated musical offering and a determined and cohesive working group is the secret by which the boys from Cosmopop are still on the crest of the wave after all this time.
We know you’re one of the minds behind the legendary Time Warp, what we don’t know is how you got in touch with the world of night’s entertainment. What were the events that lead you to enter this fascinating ecosystem?
Let use this famous hook line “Music was my first love” and so when I got first contact with electronic music in the early 90ies I was straight away fascinated by the energy of this new sound. The passion for electronic music leaded me and also my partner Steffen to start events.
How did the Time Warp format come out? What kind of party the staff had in mind when it was designed?
Actually that was invented and established by my partner Steffen Charles, back then we were competitors but have been always friends. With Time Warp, it all started 1994 in an old warehouse in Ludwigshafen, a city close to Mannheim. Steffen started the event together with Michael Hock who is still the Time Warp Production manager. The line up of the first event saw people like Speedy J, Robert Armani, Laurent Garnier… In 1995 Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Josh Wink gave their Time Warp debut and we moved with the event to the Maimarkthalle in Mannheim, our homebase. Its nice to have some of the artists on board ever since.
How has it evolved then in succeeding years? Did you honestly expect all this fame?
We haven’t started the whole thing as we were striving for fame. Well we just did what we thought was right. Driven by passion for electronic music and by the idea to give the audience and the artists alike the best possible experience in a special atmosphere. Within the first 10 years, Time Warp took also place on several other cities in Germany and from 2000 ownwards the homebase for Time Warp has been the Maimarkthalle in Mannheim. In 2005 we had our first show abroad in Prague, Vienna followed and since 2008 Holland is our regular yearly party abroad. 2011 Italy joined our international portfolio. Today, Time Warp is a very international brand that stands for an authentic event experience for a place to get inspired and meet people from all over the world. Although, Time Warp is very successful and has grown huge, we are still accepted and regard ourselves as an underground dance event.
As you said, from 2000 onwards, the Maimarkthalle of Mannheim has become the official home of Time Warp, attracting every year thousands of visitors from all over Europe. What is the time lived in there that you remember with most pleasure?
Each edition has its own highlights and brings many good memories. Whenever we have finished one edition, the entire team looks forward to the next. The most precious moment though is every year when we open the doors and you could see all those cheerful people from all over the world. And you realise they all travel long distances just to share this experience. Time Warp is also something you cannot describe… I mean you have to be there to feel it.
Why did you decide to place Time Warp in Mannheim rather than, for instance, a place like Berlin? Did you prefer to value your own territory?
It wasn’t actually a decision against Berlin or other places. Mannheim was the city in which we grew up musically and had our first event experience. So it was rather natural to start an event here.
About 10 years after the first edition, you have started to organize events away from Germany, first in Prague and then in Vienna. How went those experiments?
Both were interesting experiences. The edition in Prague was successful and we intended to keep on doing TW there. However, the year after the location in which Time Warp took place, had been destroyed by fire and our partners from the Czech Republic split themselves. So we haven’t done anything there anymore. And Vienna was very difficult as the market down there wasn’t right for us and the musical proposition Time Warp has to give.
After those experiments you created some stable satellite festivals, first in the Netherlands and then in Italy. Have you wanted to please your most loyal guests by giving them a piece of Time Warp closer to home?
Yes that’s the main reason. The Dutch have always been a large part of the Time Warp crowd. And also Italians have been coming to TW even from the first edition. Our Italian friends are the biggest fan base after our German audience. And also we think the Italians are the most loyal and enthusiastic guests, in other words the best audience you can dream of. It was a logical step for us to go to Italy and bring Time Warp to this euphoric crowd. Milano has always had a special appeal to us: it the city of fashion and trends, so we believe Time Warp should take place there. So far, we have received a warm welcome and are happy to work together with so many nice people in Italy. We are glad that many people from the industry such as club or festival promoters, opinion leaders and media haven given us support in the first year. Not to forget the work of our Italian partners, Randy from RND, Berit vom BARTIST and Luca from Modart.
And right about this, outside the box of press releases can you tell us what happened with the Time Warp Italy for 2013? Which are the reasons for its cancellation and postponement to 2014? Is it probable that there will be a venue change?
We simply couldn’t find a date at the Fiera for the festival on which we also could get all the artists that stand for Time Warp. We will be back in 2014 for the big 20th Year anniversary of Time Warp. For those who cannot wait, Time Warp Netherlands is on the 7th of December 2013 at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. We will bring lots from the stage designs and production from Time Warp Mannheim 2013.
After years of great success, next year Time Warp celebrate its 20th anniversary. Which goodies should we expect to celebrate this happy event?
We have just finished the designs for the 20 years anniversary poster. The creative team is working on some ideas such as special video episodes and documentary. And our production team is currently busy with the stage and floor designs for next year. Be prepared to get something special.
In 2003, along with Charles Steffen you have founded Cosmopop, the organization that manages Time Warp and other festivals like the Love Family Park and SEMF in Stuttgart, not to mention some historic clubs like the Loft and Hafen49. How was the organization born and how has developed over the years?
Steffen and myself have been friends since the early 90ties. Back then he founded Time Warp and I had my event series. We always helped each other. After I finished my studies, we decided to join forces and build up a new company. That was in 2003… time is rushing. In the beginning there were just Steffen, myself, one fulltime and two part-time employees. So, we build the company from the scratch. 2003 and 2004 were rather difficult years as to my perception, Techno had been going through some changes after the first commercial bang at the end of the 90s and beginning 00 years. Our strategy has been ever since to invest in our brands, to invest in quality on the events, techNOcompromise, and to bring the brands on an international level. Apart from our own festivals, we have started to help a lot of artists with their show productions and have in the meantime gained a deep understanding and knowledge for artist needs. What is also very important for cosmopop is to built a strong team and keep on developing the people and invest in infrastructure.
Just the Love Family Park has become a permanent fixture in the European summer. This year you finally opened the doors to the darker sounds, dedicating a whole stage to techno. Are you satisfied of the result obtained with this experiment?
Yes, we are satisfied that we enriched the musical spectrum of Love Family Park. The guests really appreciated it. LFP has been going on for 18 years now. To keep it relevant for the people and to succeed in competition who always have to further develop a festival brand without losing its core values. The same with Time Warp, we always try to push the limitis: techNOLIMITS!
This year you have organized the Sonus Festival in Croatia, thus covering an area (that of Pag) where there are many festivals during the summer. What makes Sonus more worthy to be visited than the other ones?
Together with our Croatian Partner, Dalle we managed to bring a new musical proposition to the island of Pag. Many people from the international scene were there, artists came earlier or stayed longer. This all brought a special family and friends atmosphere, which everybody could have felt.
What does the future hold to Cosmopop? Is there any project in the pipeline that you’d like to share with our readers?
We are constantly thinking about new projects or evaluating ideas. In 2014 we will come up with a new festival: Sea You, at the Tunisee in Freiburg Germany. It’s a 3 Day Open Air festival situated at a Lake. One stage will be in the lake, so people can swim and dance in the water. Keep your eyes open for this one.
