Chiamatelo The Wizard, l’Alieno, il mago dei 3 piatti o semplicemente Jeff, la sostanza non cambia. Mills è, senza ombra di dubbio, uno di quelli che hanno scritto (e continuano a scrivere) pagine della storia della musica. Inutile star qui ad elencare tutti i momenti fondamentali della sua vita, un elenco che si può estrarre da una qualsiasi biografia aggiornata. Ciò che mi ha dato da pensare nelle ultime settimane invece è stata una semplice domanda che vorrei porre a tutti voi, o, perlomeno, a coloro che amano la sua musica e/o hanno voglia di mettersi in discussione. Io, una volta avuta la mia risposta, ho fatto il punto della situazione e mi sono reso conto che troppo spesso mi soffermo ad aspetti tec(h)nici, di contorno e pseudo-culturali di un brano o di un album. Un po‘ troppo spesso si confonde il piacevole con il bello o con l’interessante, o meglio, troppo di frequente ci sfugge di mente che quando una cosa non si capisce andrebbe riascoltata fin quasi l’esaurimento: superare lo scoglio (o il morbido cuscino) dell’abitudine, per far lavorare il cervello, le orecchie e l’interpretazione. La mia domanda è semplice, vergognosamente semplice, ma allo stesso tempo, se inquadrata nel contesto di quest’intervista, penso e spero possa essere un buono spunto di riflessione. Se pensato ai suoi soli concept album e non agli EP o alle raccolte di brani, quante volte avete ascoltato tutto d’un fiato un intero lavoro di Jeff Mills?
La tua vita, come spesso accade per un artista, non è mai stata bloccata, rilegata ad un solo luogo. Dopo Detroit ti sei spostato prima a New City, poi a Berlino ed in fine a Chicago. Considerando che ogni luogo ha le sue pulsazioni, i suoi ritmi e le sue dinamiche di vita, come hanno influenzato queste 4 città la tua evoluzione artistica rispetto alla volontà di voler far Techno al di fuori della sua sola concezione musicale?
Negli anni mi sono trasferito da Detroit a New York, ma mi sono sempre portato dietro quella tecnica che mi deriva dai tempi della Final Cut e dall’Underground Resistence. Quindi, oggi come allora, quando mi siedo per produrre conservo delle abitudini che ormai mi accompagnano da sempre. Avevo poco più di 30 anni all’epoca. Ero più anziano della stragrande maggioranza della gente che avevo attorno e avevo un’idea abbastanza precisa di dove fossi e di cosa stessi facendo. In tutte le città in cui ho vissuto ho cercato sempre di trovare il modo di studiare, approcciare e realizzare la musica da varie e diverse prospettive.
Continuando a parlare di forme e ritmi della civilizzazione, nel 2000 hai portato a termine “Metropolis”, un progetto nato con l’obbiettivo di creare una nuova colonna sonora dell’omonimo film muto del 1927 diretto da Fritz Lang. Forse questa può esser considerata la tua prima opera incentrata su possibili scenari futuri. Perché, fra i molti film di fantascienza, hai scelto proprio “Metropolis”? Che nesso hai cercato di creare fra le musiche ed il film?
Parlando di scenari futuri penso che la mia prima vera esperienza potrebbe essere considerata “Discoveries The Rings Of Saturn” pubblicata come X-102 (disco uscito nel 1992 e composto da Jeff Mills, Mike Banks & Robert Hood, ndr). In Metropolis di Fritz Lang sono stati non pochi gli aspetti che mi hanno convinto che fosse quella la scelta giusta. Ad esempio: il fatto che, nel film, la storia è ambientata attorno al 2000; le correlazioni che ritrovavo con la città in cui sono cresciuto, Detroit; la presentazione di Metropolis e dei lavoratori del sottosuolo; le relazioni oscure fra i vari personaggi; la tecnica magistrale di Lang e molti altri aspetti. Ho creato le musiche basandomi su vari elementi che ho percepito in ogni segmento del film, come il movimento degli attori, le diverse sfumature di luce e buio e via di scorrendo.
Oltre alla particolarità di questo progetto, e di altri come “Time Machine” e “Three Ages”, sono interessanti anche le modalità di esecuzione (live accompagnati dalla proiezione integrale dei film) e i luoghi in cui hai presentato il progetto (Museo della Musica di Parigi e la Royal Albert Hall di Londra per citarne due). Hai sempre portato la tua musica in location completamente diverse: insomma, dall’Awakenings alla Royal Albert Hall ce ne passa… Le differenze fra le varie tipologie di luoghi in cui hai suonato forse sono più evidenti, quel che vorrei chiederti sono invece i nessi, i link fra le varie location ed esibizioni. Certo, cambiano le dinamiche delle performance, ma stiamo parlando pur sempre di Techno…
Non è complicato portare la Techno in location diverse. I parametri indefiniti del genere lo rendono ideale per questi adattamenti. Io continuo a pensare che il modo migliore di vivere la Techno sia semplicemente quello di ascoltarla, senza ballare. Sostengo sia corretto assumere che la Techno non sia derivata da macchina o software particolari, ma, magari, sia il frutto di un sentimento, di una o più sensazioni che l’ascoltatore prova rapportandosi con una musica progettata in maniera unica.
Ho letto in un’intervista che non sei solito far prendere alle tue performance una direzione piuttosto che un’altra in base alla risposta del pubblico in questione. Allo stesso tempo, però, hai affermato che dicidi quanto puoi andare affondo basandosi sulle reazioni del pubblico. Il 6 Ottobre hai suonato al Brancaleone di Roma, locale in cui suoni ormai da molti anni. Che tipo di pubblico ti trovi di fronte in quel club? Che rapporto hai con questo club?
Solitamente ho davanti a me un pubblico molto entusiasta al Brancaleone, un audience ben educato all’ascolto. Ho suonato molto spesso al Branca ed è sempre stata un’esperienza fantastica. Le persone che frequentano quel locale sono secondo me uno dei motivi per cui si va a creare quell’atmosfera unica.
Io stesso giorno, inoltre, la tua performance nel medesimo club è stata preceduta dall’italian premier del film “SubBerlin – The Sotry of Tresor”, in collaborazione con Soundwall Magazine e Tresor Berlin. Sei una delle molte figure illustri che prendono parte al film ed è proprio con il Tresor, fra l’altro, che hai rilasciato alcuni dei tuoi primi lavori più noti (Waveform Transmission Vol. 1, ad esempio). Pensando agli anni in cui la tua Techno era più fisica rispetto ad ora, come racconteresti il Tresor di quel periodo a qualcuno che non lo ha mai vissuto? Pensi che SubBerlin riesca a rendere ciò che era il Club?
I ricordi che ho del Tresor rappresentano alcuni dei momenti più importanti della mia carriera da dj. Essere lì, nel momento in cui l’Est e l’Ovest di Berlino si stavano ritrovando, è stata un’esperienza che non dimenticherò mai. Non ho avuto ancora occasione di vedere il film, ma sono sicuro che non riesce a spiegare veramente tutto; immagino si siano concentrati sull’importanza della realtà “Tresor” nell’evoluzione della Techno qui in Europa. Ci sono alcune cose che accadevano fra la gente di quegli anni che non verranno mai documentate a dovere. Ad esempio, la fondamentale importanza di Hard Wax, il ruolo che il negozio aveva come fulcro del movimento e punto di riferimento sia per gente comune che per Djs. Ma anche alcuni bar, alcuni caffè in cui si discuteva del concetto e delle teorie circa la Techno. Non vedo veramente l’ora di trovare il tempo per sedermi e godermi il film!
Tornando ora a tempi più recenti, trovo il tuo modo di produrre in affascinante contrapposizione con il tuo interesse per lo studio di tempi, spazi e suoni del domani. Da quanto ho letto non utilizzi software ma solo hardware, il tuo modo di produrre è rimasto perlopiù invariato rispetto al passato: una concretizzazione rétro del futuro… interessante! Come mai questa scelta, semplice abitudine?
Mah, guarda, ho capito che l’attrezzatura e i mezzi con cui uno produce non sono veramente così importanti. E‘ ciò che fai con quell’attrezzatura che fa la differenza.
Sempre parlando del tuo rapporto con il presente, è raro sentirti suonare tracce di altri artisti. Come mai? Immagino non ti rispecchi nella classica concezione del dj. Ti interessi ancora dell’evoluzione del genere? Qual è il tuo pensiero a riguardo?
Sono per lo più interessato a portare avanti il genere. Il mio obbiettivo è quello di espandermi verso l’esterno in tutte le direzioni. Per questo motivo sono costantemente alla ricerca di qualcosa di nuova da suonare. Quando ho capito che non potevo trovare e comprare abbastanza tracce che rispecchiassero le mie necessità, ho deciso di provare a farmele da solo. A volte suono ancora brani di altri artisti, ma la maggior parte del materiale che uso è fatto specificatamente pensando al carattere delle mie esibizioni.
Uno dei tanti motivi per cui a mio parere varrebbe la pena acquistare “Sequence” (prodotto che uscirà a fine Ottobre, nato con lo scopo di celebrare il ventennale dell’etichetta raccontandone la storia attraverso foto, desing art e musica) è la presenza di un tuo commento per ognuna delle 24 tracce presenti nell’opera. Sarebbe veramente un onore concludere questa breve intervista con un tuo commento sulla traccia “Changes Of Life”, o, se preferisci, un tuo commento esclusivo su “Aitken Basin”, traccia non presente in Sequence.
OK. Vada per “Aitken Basin”: è una traccia dall’album “The Messenger”. L’ Aitken Basin è il cratere più esteso che l’uomo abbia mai trovato sulla Luna. Nella storia immaginaria di The Messenger è proprio in quel cratere che risiede una particolare razza di alieni. Questi sono lì con lo scopo di raccogliere i sogni degli esseri umani al fine di inviarli in altri luoghi dello spazio occupati da specie incapaci di sognare. Gli umani conservano deboli ricordi dei loro sogni proprio a causa di quest’estrazione aliena che va a privare l’individuo della maggior parte del ricordo, subito dopo che il sogno viene sintetizzato. In questo immaginario ogni esperienza che l’uomo vive nel corso della vita è disegnata dagli abitanti dell’Aitken Basin. La nostra realtà non è altro che “foraggio per le masse aliene” [“livestock feed”].

Call him The Wizard, the Alien, the “3 decks magician” or just Jeff, it does not change. Mills is without doubt one of those who wrote (and still write) the pages of the history of music. Needless to sit here and to list all important moments of his life, a list that can be extracted from any biography. What got me thinking about, in the last weeks, was a simple question that I would pose to all of you, or at least to those who love Jeff music and/or to thoso who want to do some “soul searching”. Once I had my answer, I realized that too often I stop to technical and pseudo-cultural aspetcs of a song or an album. A bit too often I exchange the pleasant with the beautiful or the interesting, or rather, too often I forget that, when you do not understand something, you should listen to it again and again, until you’re nearly exhausted. My question is simple, embarrassingly simple, but at the same time, in the context of this interview, I think it could be a good reflection starting point. How many times did you listen in one breath to an entire work of Jeff Mills?
Your life, as it often happens in the life of an artist, has never been locked, bound to one place. After Detroit, you first moved to New York, then to Berlin and finally to Chicago. Considering that each place has its heartbeat, its rhythm and its life dynamics, how did these four cities influence your artistic development connected to your desire to make Techno outside from its musical concept?
By the time I moved from Detroit to NY, I had nearly established a particular technique that stemmed from working in the musical units Final Cut and Underground Resistance, so when I sat down to make music, I had certain habits that I always drew from. I was in my early 30’s as well. Older than most of the people that were around, I had a pretty good idea of where I was and what I was doing. I don’t recall being so heavily influence that I thought what I was doing was less than anything else. In all the cities I lived in, I always made it a point to search out things that might help me approach a concept from various perspective.
Continuing to talk about shapes and rhythms of civilization, in 2000 you have completed “Metropolis”, a project with the purpose of creating a new score for the 1927 silent film directed by Fritz Lang. Perhaps this can be considered your first work focused on possible future sceneries. Why, among many science fiction movies, did you choose “Metropolis”? What is the link you tried to create between music and movie?
In terms of future sceneries, I think X-102 discoveries The Rings Of Saturn might be the first experience. In Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, there were a few aspects that convinced me it was the right choice. Things like: In the film, the story takes place around the year 2000, the relationship between the city I grew up, Detroit and the satire of Metropolis and the workers of the underground, the obscure relationship between characters, the masterful technique of Lang and many other aspects. I composed the music based on how I understood what I seen on the screen in each segment. The movement of the actors, the different degrees of light and dark, etc.
In addition to the peculiarity of these projects, also the performance (live set accompanied by movie screening) and venues in which you presented these projects (Museum of Music in Paris and the Royal Albert Hall in London, for example) are really interesting. You used to bring your music in completely different locations: I mean, between Awakenings and the Royal Albert Hall there are lots of thing… Maybe differences between various locations you played at are most clear, what I’d like to ask are the connections, the links between these different live acts. Ok, dynamics and undertones of performances change, but it is always Techno…
It’s not that difficult to convert to the various scenarios. The undefined parameters of Techno makes it the perfect genre for these adaptations. I always believe that the best way to experience Techno is to listen to it [without dancing]. I think it is logical to assume that Techno isn’t derived from particular machines of software, but perhaps, its a feeling that a listener gets from hearing music being projected in a unique way.
On the 6th of October you played at Brancaleone in Rome, club where you played several times. What kind of audience you usually find there?
A very enthusiastic, well educated audience. I’ve played there many times and its always a fantastic experience. The people are responsible for the unique atmosphere.
Furthermore, on the same day and at the same club, your performance was preceded by the Italian premier of the movie “SubBerlin – The Sotry of Tresor”, in collaboration with Soundwall Magazine and Tresor Berlin. You are one of the many illustrious figures who talk in the film; and exactly with Tresor, you released some of your first best-known works (Waveform Transmission Vol 1, for example). Looking back to the period in which your Techno was more physical than now, how would you describe the Tresor of that time to someone who has never experience it? Do you think SubBerlin is able to describe what the club really was?
My memories of Tresor are some of the highlights of my dj career. To be there, during the time east and west Berlin came together was a experience I’ll never forget. I’ve haven’t seen the film yet, but I’m sure it doesn’t really fully explain just important Tresor was to the evolution of the Techno Music here in Europe. There were many things happening among the people that will probably never be documented. For instance, how important the record Hardwax Records was, the role the shop played as a hub for everyone/DJs at that time. Or, certain bars and cafes that were the places theories and concepts about Techno music were discussed. I look forward to seeing the movie.
I think your way of producing creates a fascinating contrast with your interest in the study of time, space and sounds of tomorrow. I read you don’t use computer softwares but only hardware: we can say the way you produce music is not changed from the past: a rétro realization of the future… interesting! Why this choice? Simple habit?
I’ve realized that the equipment isn’t really that important. It is what’s done with the equipment that makes the difference.
Still talking about your relationship with the present, it is rare to hear you play tracks from other artists. Why? I guess you do not reflect the classical conception of the word “dj”, but are you still interested in the evolution of the genre? What do you think about its last changing?
I’m mostly interested in moving forward with the genre. Expanding outward in all directions. To do this, I’m always looking for unique things to play. When I seen that I couldn’t find and buy enough of these tracks, I decided to try and make them myself. I still play other artist’s tracks, but most of the material is made specifically for what I need.
One of many reasons for which, in my opinion, one should buy “Sequence” (that will be out on late October in order to celebrate the first 20 years of activity of Axis) is the presence of your comment for each of the 24 tracks present in the work. It would really be an honor ending this interview with a comment on the track “Changes Of Life” or, if you prefer, with your comment on “Aitken Basin”, that is not present in Sequence.
OK. “Aitken Basin” is a track from the album “The Messenger”. The Aitken Basin is the largest crater on the Moon. In the fictional story of The Messenger, it is inside this crater that a race of aliens reside. They’re there for the purpose of harvesting the dreams of humans to send them elsewhere in the Universe to other species that do not have the ability to dream. Humans retain small faint accounts of their dreams, which is the residue due to the extraction, but the large collection that every human produces are taken soon after we create them. Everything humans experience in their lives is by design by the Aliens. Our reality is nothing more than “livestock feed”.
