Quando anni fa udii per caso “First Stroke” tutto avrei immaginato tranne di ascoltare il disco di uno dei Dj più conosciuti e famosi della scena techno e tanto meno che fosse uno dei due fondatori della famosissima Plus8 Records: John Acquaviva. L’altro co-fondatore è, come sappiamo tutti, il noto Richie Hawtin. John ha ottenuto dei grandi successi durante la sua carriera e nel mondo del digitale e dell’analogico; le sue collaborazioni con Lützenkirchen, Kid Dub, Swen Weber, Julio Navas, David Amo, Olivier Giacomotto, Madox, Tommie Sunshine, Alex D’Elia, Andrea Doria, Remo, Cirillo e tanti altri parlano chiaro. Un producer e Dj completo che ha conquistato tutte le charts e i clubbers di tutte le generazioni ritagliandosi un posto nei migliori di sempre! Un altro grande passo per l’italo-canadese è stato creare la Definitive Recordings insieme ad Hawtin e Karl Kowalski, dove molti grandi Dj hanno rilasciato le loro tracce e le proprie idee. Non si è fermato certo qua! Acquaviva è stato anche di grande aiuto per il lancio di Beatport.com, il più grande portale di download di dance-music del mondo. Ciao John e benvenuto su Soundwall! E’ veramente un onore!
Ti sei laureato in matematica e statistica, ma non hai voluto intraprendere quella noiosa strada e hai lasciato perdere tutto per diventare un grande Dj e producer! Com’è stato il passaggio da clubber a performer? Raccontaci i sviluppi di questa storia.
La transizione è avvenuta agli inizi della scuola e non l’ho neanche notata. Anche da giovane mi piaceva selezionare musica alle feste scolastiche. Credo di averlo sempre avuto nel sangue.
“Too Cool 4 Skool” è un pò il manifesto di questa voglia di abbandonare gli studi e ciò che li circonda, oppure è solo un caso che si intitoli così?
Questo è una delle modalità di vedere le cose. Con questo, nella vita è meglio una vera esperienza di vita invece di una passata per strada. Ma, l’altra faccia della medaglia è che alcune persone non imparano mai, così sostanzialmente sono troppo fighi per la scuola.
La passione per la musica, Djing e produzione sono antecedenti o postumi alla tua laurea?
Sono antecedenti alla mia laurea. La scuola non mi piaceva molto ma forse la mia più grande lezione di vita è stata di finire qualcosa che ho iniziato. Dico sempre ai miei figli che…“se riuscite a finire un cosa che non vi piace particolarmente e la fate anche bene, immaginate cosa potete fare con qualcosa di cui siete appassionati”.
Per quanto concerne la produzione hai avuto delle dritte o frequentato dei corsi, oppure hai fatto tutto da autodidatta?
Mai andato a scuola, ma ho accumulato suggerimenti da ogni ingegnere con il quale ho lavorato lungo la carriera. Molti ingegneri sono qualificati e mi hanno insegnato i principi che avrei dovuto adottare o no. Per esempio, quando si accendono le lucette rosse che indicano il clip sul mixer (redlining) non va bene, ma noi tutti Djs non facciamo che accendere quelle di tutti i mixer che vediamo…i risultati a volte sono buoni, altre volte no.
Hai origini italiane, ma sei cresciuto poi in Canada. Qual è il tuo legame con l’Italia, senti di farne ancora parte? Cosa ne pensi a proposito della techno della tua nazione natale?
Ho una strano rapporto con l’Italia. Sono nato in un momento in cui erano obbligatori i 2 anni di servizio militare. Quando ho iniziato ad avere grande successo in Europa, nel 1991, non sono potuto entrare in Italia a causa di un disguido con le mie carte/esenzioni militari. Quindi l’unico Paese nel quale non sono entrato fino a 35 anni e non avevo dunque più problemi militari…era l’Italia. Così spesso mi sono sentito più europeo che italiano. Ma da allora sono venuto molte volte e sono diventato più italiano e ho fatto bene ad imparare e a collegarmi con la mia lingua e la mia cultura.
Tra il 1989 e il 1990 insieme a Richie Hawtin fondate la Plus8 Records Ltd, scuderia dei migliori produttori del mondo; etichetta progressiva e un determinante della scena underground di Detroit. Cosa rappresenta per te la Plus 8 e la tua amicizia con Hawtin?
E’ stato il nostro primo sforzo e abbiamo creato il nostro marchio nel mondo. Abbiamo fatto molte cose da allora, sia insieme che separatamente, ma la Plus8 è ancora molto speciale per me…e penso lo sia per entrambi.
E’ giusto attribuire una buona parte del tuo successo e di Richie a questa label?
Non ho capito questa domanda…ma fammi provare. Le fondamenta del nostro successo sono di sicuro formate dalla Plus8. Era la prima volta che avevamo provato una cosa del genere, ed è riuscita a livello internazionale. Quindi sì…
Viste le molteplici collaborazioni mi viene da chiederti che rapporti hai con Olivier Giacomotto. Avete ancora qualche progetto per i vostri ascoltatori?
Ho lavorato con molte persone in studio, organizzato tour e tutto ciò che ha a che fare con la musica nel corso degli anni. Olivier è uno dei miei preferiti e uno dei migliori amici tra tutte le persone che conosco. Condividiamo molto la nostra passione e la nostra visione. Questo si estende al cibo e alle bevande. Così abbiamo sempre molto da fare insieme. Abbiamo appena fatto un tour delle Americhe dove l’ho presentato a molti dei miei club e in nuovi posti. Faremo molto di più di questo perchè l’etichetta è forte e la gente si aspetta di più dal nostro sound.
C’è un artista in particolare, di qualsiasi genere musicale con cui ti piacerebbe collaborare?
Attualmente spero e penso di fare qualcosa con Umek, che conosco da sempre ma con il quale non ho mai fatto niente…penso che si possa realizzare il tutto nel 2012.
Fai parte della scena elettronica mondiale da molti anni. Questa passione quanto tempo “ruba” da dedicare a te stesso e alla famiglia?
Dormo veramente poco. E’ l’unico modo per fare tutto ciò che si desidera.
Hai qualche progetto in vista per il tuo futuro?
Niente di rilevante…o meglio, niente che mi sia permesso di rivelare…si spera in alcuni lavori top secret nel prossimo anno o fra due.

You graduated in mathematics and statistics, but you wouldn’t undertake that tedious road and you left everything to become a great Dj and producer! How was the transition from clubber to performer? Tell us about developments of this story.
The transition happened early in school so I never really noticed. Even at a young age I would select music at school parties. I guess it was always in my blood.
“Too Cool 4 Skool” is the manifest of this desire to leave studies, or is a case it is called in this way?
That is one way to look at it. In that life is better with a real experience in life instead of the street. But the other side of this, is that some people never learn, so basically they are too cool for school.
The passion for music, Djing and production are antecedents or posthmously to your degree?
They were they before my degree. I did not like school very much but perhaps my best lesson in life was to finish something i started. I tell me kids this…“if you can finish something you are not particularily fond of and do well, imagine what you can do with something you have a passion for.”
Regarding production you received tips or you attended some courses, or you did it all by self-learner?
Never went to school, but picked up tips from each engineer I worked with along the way. Some engineers were formally trained and gave me some fundamentals that I would take or do the opposite. For example, redlining was bad, but all of us Djs always redline every mixer we see…sometimes good and sometimes bad results.
You are Italian-born, but then you grow up in Canada. What’s your relationship with Italy, you feel still a part of it? What do you think about the Techno in your birthplace country?
I have a strange relationship with Italy. I was born in a time when there was 2 years compulsory military service. When we started to have our big success in Europe in 1991, I could not enter Italy due to a mixup in my military papers/exemption. So the only country I did not enter until I was 35 and no longer had a military issue…was Italy. So I often feel more European than Italian. But I have come a lot since then and have become more Italian and done pretty well at learning and connecting with my language and culture.
Between 1989 and 1990 with Richie Hawtin founded Plus8 Records Ltd, stable of the best producers in the world; progressive label and a determinant of the Detroit’s underground scene. What does it symbolyze for you Plus 8 and your friendship with Hawtin?
It was our first effort and making our mark in the world. We have done many things since then, both together and separately, but Plus8 is still very special to me…and I think to us both.
Do you think it’s right assign a good part of your and of Richie success on this label?
I do not understand this question…but let me try. The foundation of our success is for sure with Plus8. It was the first time we tried and succeeded at an international level. So yes…
Since severals parterships I ask you what is your relationship with Olivier Giacomotto. Do you have plans for your listeners?
I have worked with many people in the studio, touring and everything to do with music over the years. Olivier is one of my favorite and best friends of all the people I know. We share a lot of the same passion and vision. This extends to food and drink. So we always have lots to do together. We just did a tour of the Americas where i introduced him to many of my clubs and new places. We will be doing more of this as the label is strong and people want more of our sound.
Is there a particular artist, of any genre of music with whom you like to collaborate?
Actually hoping and planning to do something with Umek whom I have known forever but never done things with…I think 2012 might be it.
You are part of the electronic scene for many years. How this passion steal time for you and for a family?
I sleep very little. It is the only way to do all that you want.
Do you have projects for your future in sight?
Nothing major…or rather, nothing that I am allowed to say…hopefully some top secret stuff comes in in the next year or two. You can always count on myself or Richie for this.
