Dal 2000, l’etichetta Robsoul si è affermata come una delle principali della scena underground house, fedele ad un sound che affonda le sue radici a Chicago ed influenzata dalla tradizione house di New York, Detroit, Parigi e Manchester. Ora la label, gestita in maniera esperta da Phil Weeks, realizza una serie di sei mini-albums che servono da showcase per i produttori che ne hanno creato il suono. Semplicemente chiamata ‘Best Of Robsoul’, la serie includerà una selezione di tracce in ogni uscita a partire da DJ Sneak e passando per DJ W!LD, Chris Carrier, Joss Moog, Fries & Bridges per arrivare a Phil Weeks. Il primo mini-album, per Chris Carrier, è uscito il 10 Agosto, seguito da un nuovo volume ogni settimana, fino alla conclusione per i Fries & Bridges il 14 di Settembre. Abbiamo colto l’occasione per intervistare Joss Moog per cercare di conoscerlo un po meglio.
I samples che usi per le tue tracce provengono sempre dalla grande tradizione del Jazz, del Soul e del Funk. Sono anche rappresentativi del tuo background musicale? Come sei diventato dj e produttore?
Naturalmente funk, jazz, soul ma anche disco, hip-hop ed acid jazz sono stili musicali che ho sempre amato. É come se andassi a cercare in diverse scatole alla ricerca di diversi giocattoli. Per esempio so che nella scatola funky troveró un bel clap acustico e profondo, nella scatola dell’hip-hop troveró un bel basso rotondo… Sono sempre stato coinvolto nella musica in diversi modi ma mi é sempre piaciuta la creazione e composizione con macchine e synths. Cosi si puo dire che l’uso delle macchine mi ha gradualmente portato verso la musica elettronica, ed inevitabilmente, al djing.
Come hai incontrato Phil Weeks e come hai iniziato a registrare per la sua label Robsoul?
Siamo stati amici da lungo tempo, prima ci siamo incontrati praticando sport e poi iniziando a produrre musica assieme. Dopo di che gli ho fatto ascoltare alcune tracce che sono diventate il mio primo EP su Robsoul (Room 25 del 2006).
Il suono Robsoul, ed il tuo in particolare, mantengono viva la tradizione del cosidetto French Touch. Dal momento che tu sei nato e vivi a Parigi, quali sono i tuoi ricordi di quella fase musicale e, ne senti la mancanza in un modo o nell’altro?
Ho dei grandi ricordi legati a quel periodo perche francesi come Bangalter, Etienne de Crecy, I:cube, St. Germain, Mr Oizo etc. sono responsabili per il mio amore per la musica elettronica. Il loro background era nei loops funky/disco loops e anche io uso in gran parte quel genere di campioni, andando a cercare sempre piu nel profondo di questo genere di musica e, ascoltando le mie produzioni, si puo facilmente notare come anche io usi ancora alcuni trucchi di quei tempi! Non posso dire che quel periodo mi manchi, ci sono ancora un sacco di produttori in giro per il mondo che mi influenzano molto e mantengo vivo quello spirito nelle loro produzioni.
La serie “Best Of Robsoul” funge da showcase per i principali produttori della Robsoul e per le loro releases per l’etichetta. Se tu dovessi descriverli uno ad uno, cominciando da Phil Weeks, che cosa ci diresti?
Phil e Sneak sono entrambi grandi produttori e djs, ammiro la loro energia e la qualitá dei loro sets, la loro personalitá e la grande presenza sul palco. Hanno entrambi una grande esperienza con und enorme background sia nella produzione che nel djing. Wild e Carrier, per i quali ho una grande ammirazione riguardo la qualitá della loro musica, sono maestri di creativitá e produzione.
So che stai lavorando ad un nuovo album. Ci puoi dire qualcosa di più a proposito?
Posso dire che é quasi pronto! Uscirá per Robsoul intorno al Gennaio 2013 e verrá preceduto da un primo EP in uscita intorno a Novembre. Dentro ci troverete alcune classiche tracce house alla Joss Moog ed anche alcuni pezzi nu-disco.
A parte questo, che altro hai in preparazione per il resto dell’anno?
Mi piacerebbe molto poter arrichire alcuni pezzi dell’album con dei video clips. Questo é un progetto che mi sta a cuore da lungo tempo ed ho sempre avuto una passione per l’invenzione di scenari in musica. Penso che l’associazione di video e musica rafforzi l’eccitazione che una traccia puo dare. Per questo la realizzazione dell’album ed il cercare di realizzare un video clip saranno i miei principali obbiettivi per il resto dell’anno.

Since 2000 Robsoul has been at the forefront of underground house music, resolutely sticking to a sound rooted in Chicago and influenced by the classic house music sounds of New York, Detroit, Paris and Manchester. Now the label, expertly run by Phil Weeks, is releasing a series of six mini-albums showcasing the producers who have helped shape its sound. Simply named ‘Best Of Robsoul’ the series will feature a selection of stand out tracks in each installment from DJ Sneak, DJ W!LD, Chris Carrier, Joss Moog, Fries & Bridges and Phil Weeks. The first release came from Chris Carrier on 10th August, followed by a new installment each week, finalised by Fries & Bridges on 14th September. We took the chance to interview Joss Moog and get to know him a bit better.
The samples you choose for your tracks are always informed by the great Jazz, Soul and Funk tradition. Are they representive of your musical background? More in general, how did you became dj and producer?
Of course funk, jazz, soul but also disco, hiphop and acid jazz are music styles that I’ve always loved. It’s like if i was looking in different boxes with different toys inside. For example I know that in the funky box I’ll try to find a nice and deep acoustic clap, in the hiphop box I’ll find out a nice round bass… I’ve always been involved in music in different ways but I always liked creation and composition with machines and synths. So I could say that the use of machines gradually took me to electronic music and, inevitably, to djing.
How did you get to meet Phil Weeks and start recording for his label Robsoul?
We have been friends for a long time, we first met by practising sport and started to make music together. Then I let him listen some tracks that became my first EP on Robsoul (Room 25 in 2006).
The Robsoul’s sound, and you own sound in particular, keep alive the so-called French-touch’s tradition. Since you are born and live in Paris, which are your memories about that musical phase and do you miss it in a way or another?
I have great memories about this period because french people like Bangalter, Etienne de Crecy, I:cube, St Germain, Mr Oizo and so are responsible for my love for electronic music. Their background was funky/disco loops and I largely use these kind of samples, searching deeper and deeper in this kind of music, and by listening to my music one can easily notice that I still use some tricks of this great time! I can’t say that I miss that period, a lot of great producers all around the world are still very influential and keep that spirit alive in their production.
The series “Best Of Robsoul” showcases all the main Robsoul’s producers and their releases for the label. If you should describe all of them one by one, starting from Phil Weeks, what would you say?
Phil and Sneak are both great producers and Djs, I admire the energy and quality of their sets, their personality and their great presence on stage. They are both very experienced with a huge background in both production and djing. Wild and Carrier, for whom i have a great admiration concerning the quality of their music, are masters of creation and production.
I know that you are working at your first album. Can you tell us something more about it?
I can say that it’s almost done ! It will be released on Robsoul around January 2013 and it will be announced by a first EP releases around November. You’ll find some classic Joss Moog house tracks and also some nu-disco tracks.
Beside that, what’s in your pipeline for the rest of the year?
I really would like to incorporate some of the LP tracks with video clips. This project is close to my heart for a long time and I’ve always been fond of inventing scenarios on music. I think that the association of video and music strengthens the thrill of the track. So releasing my LP and trying to make a video clip will be my main goals for the rest of the year!
