Dopo essersi lasciata alle spalle quel successo planetario che è stato il progetto Hercules and Love affair, Kim Ann Foxman, non pensa che al suo personale e radioso futuro: cantante e cantautrice, dj e producer, un’artista eclettica e originale, con tutte le carte in regola per diventare un’icona dell’elettronica underground d’oltre oceano, e non solo. Insomma, molto più che un semplice “affare d’amore”.
Kim, da clubber sedicenne innamorata dei Technotronic, a dj giramondo apprezzata e rispettata ovunque. Te lo saresti mai aspettato?
Non me lo sarei mai aspettato! Sono cresciuta su un isola (Hawaii), e questo mondo mi sembrava così lontano… Mi sento davvero fortunata. Amo far ballare la gente per vivere.
Il tuo sound è fortemente influenzato da certa dance dei primi anni ’90: acid, deep, hip house e hype. Mi sbaglio? Se è cosi, partendo dall’esperienza con il progetto Hercules and Love Affair, come si sta evolvendo l’artista Kim Ann Foxman?
Non ti sbagli. Mi ispiro tantissimo alla dance dei primi anni ’90: acid e classic deep house, oltre che hip house. Ma amo molto anche l’RnB e il freestyle degli anni ’80. Mi sento un’artista dance in piena evoluzione: sto scrivendo e cantando di persona le mie canzoni, parallelamente alle produzioni. Racconto le mie storie e collaboro con artisti che apprezzo e rispetto molto. Il mio è stato un viaggio musicale divertente e avventuroso!
Hercules and Love Affair: cosa ha significato per te questo progetto e perché hai deciso di abbandonarlo? Qualche rimpianto?
E’ stato un progetto fantastico, un percorso fantastico. Ho amato la musica e le amicizie che ho stretto, sono stata davvero felice, ma poi le cose sono cambiate, ed ho deciso di lasciare. Oggi sono davvero grata per questa esperienza. Ma, no, non ho alcun rimpianto.
Da artista stanziata a New York, credi ci siano differenze fra la scena dance USA e quella europea?
Il mercato della musica dance è sicuramente migliore in Europa, ci sono più opzioni: club migliori, migliori sound systems, orari di chiusura più flessibili e pubblico maggiore. Negli Usa, la scena dance in generale e quella underground specialmente, è molto meno sviluppata, i club sono molti di meno, anche se non per questo meno ‘cool’, specialmente qui a New York. Ovvio, non sto certo parlando dei club che ospitano la nuova scuola “EDM”, perché quello è tutto un altro mondo, che non mi appartiene. In generale la scena è comunque in crescita, e sono sicura che salteranno fuori nuovi grandi clubs e ottimi parties.
Un artista, non per forza del mondo dance, con cui ti piacerebbe collaborare?
Ce ne sono talmente tanti… Janet Jackson, Elizabeth Fraser, Tina Weymouth, le prime tre che mi vengono in mente!
Dj tips: qual è la tua ‘killer track’ al momento? Il tuo disco preferito di tutti i tempi?
Beh, quanto a killer tracks, ne scelgo due, Aster – Cielo (Bicep Remix II) e Snuff Crew feat. Tyree Cooper – Work It Out. Disco preferito di sempre? In realtà non ce ne ho uno solo, dipende dai periodi, oggi risponderei Tom Tom Club – Genius Of Love, l’ho appena sentita in macchina. Davvero geniale.
Qual è il tuo setup in studio? Più analog o vst?
Al momento condivido uno studio a Brooklyn con Populette and Pleasure Planet. Condividiamo la nostra attrezzatura e abbiamo un “arsenale” analogico davvero di tutto rispetto, ma lavoro molto anche con i vst, amo combinare le due cose. Ecco una foto dello studio.
Per quanto riguarda i tuoi set invece? Da quello che vedo e ascolto, sei una dj old school, zero laptop e giù con rimshot e linee di basso acide, ma hai mai pensato ad un live set?
Il live è sicuramente uno dei miei progetti futuri, ma mi concentrerò su questo quando finirò l’album.
La tua ultima release risale ad Ottobre 2012, su Needwant. Cos’hai in serbo per noi?
La mia prossima release personale uscirà su Jackathon, ma ho molte altre collaborazioni in uscita su altre etichette! A fine Settembre su Love Fever è uscito “D.R.E.A.M.” con Ron Jason.

After the huge success of the Hercules and Love affair project, Kim Ann Foxman is thinking about her bright future: singer and songwriter, dj and produce, a very original and eclectic artist, she’s got what it take to become the next big thing in electronic underground scene. It’s just more than a “love affair.
Kim Ann, from a 16 years old clubber who was in love with Technotronic and all that house stuff, to a globe trotter dj and world recognized dance music icon, would ever expected to get where you are now?
I really didn’t expect it, I grew up on an island (Hawaii), and this whole world seemed so far away. I do feel so lucky and I love making people dance for a living.
Your sound is strongly influenced by the early 90’s dance music: acid, deep, hip house and hype. Am I wrong? If I’m not, starting from this and after the Hercules and Love affair experience, how is Kim Ann evolving as a dance music artist?
yes you are right. I am inspired by a lot of early 90’s dance music. I love acid house and all classic deep house & hip house, I also love RnB and freestyle from the 80’s. I do feel myself evolving as a dance music artist, I’m writing and singing my own songs, and doing my own production as well. I’m telling my own stories, and I’m collaborating with artists that I love and respect so much. It’s been such a fun journey. adventures non stop!
Hercules and Love affair: what did it mean for you this project and why did you decide to leave it? Any regrets?
Hercules and Love Affair was a project that I am happy to have experienced, it was an amazing ride, I loved the music, I loved the friendships I made, but I went into the project with so much love and happiness and over time, things really started to change along the ride, that made me not so happy anymore, so I chose to leave and I feel it was a really good decision. do I regret leaving it? Not at all. I’m very thankful for the many fun times and experiences that I had with Hercules and Love Affair, but I’m really happy with my decision.
As a New York based artist, what are for you the main differences between US and Europe electronic scenes?
The market for dance music is much better in Europe, there are more options for better club nights, better sound systems, clubs stay open later, bigger crowds. In the US, the underground dance music scene is much smaller, but still very special, and cool there are better dancers, especially in NY. But sadly there are less choices for places with a good vibe and good sound system. I’m not talking about the new school “EDM” scene because I’m not really in that – that’s a whole different conversation but as far as places I play in Europe compared to places that I play as a House dj in the US… that’s what I’m talking about the scene in the US is growing though, especially in the last few years, and new great clubs and parties are popping up for sure.
An artist (not only in the Dance world) you would like to collaborate with?
So many, Janet Jackson, Elizabeth Fraser, Tina Weymouth spring to mind.
Dj tips: What’s the hottest jam in your bag at the moment and (this is an hard one, I know) what’s your all time favourite track?
Hottest jam at the moment- well, I’m loving Aster – Cielo (Bicep Remix II) and also Snuff Crew – Work It Out ft. Tyree Cooper is always a dancefloor winner. All time fav track? this can change all the time for me – today I will say Tom Tom Club – Genius Of Love because i just listened to it on a drive to upstate New York. It really is so genius.
How do you work in the studio, it’s more about analog or vst? What’s your studio setup?
I share a studio with Populette and Pleasure Planet at the moment in Brooklyn. We all pool our gear and we have a pretty awesome set up for analogue gear. I also work with vsts as well. i like the combo. Here is a link of our studio.
And what about your dj sets? From what I could listen and see, you are an old-school-no-laptop-dj who loves rimshots and 303 basslines, and no doubts about its? But have you ever thought about a live set?
I will def have a live set sometime in the future, I’ll concentrate on that once i finish my album project.
October ’12 your last personal release on Needwant: What’s next? What are your plans for the future?
My next solo release is gonna be on Jackathon, and i have other collabs coming out on other labels as well. At the end of September on Love Fever went out “D.R.E.A.M.” with Ron Jason.
