Riuscire a capire cosa è meglio fare per se stessi e come farlo non è da tutti. Lo sanno bene Delmar e Alvaro meglio conosciuti come Los Suruba. Dopo essersi incontrati agli inizi degli anni 2000 hanno studiato insieme design per poi passare a studiare produzione di musica elettronica al college. Dopo qualche anno, dopo aver intrapreso le loro carriere da solisti nel 2009 hanno fondato il loro nuovo progetto Los Suruba che nel giro di poco tempo è stato apprezzato da migliaia di persone in tutto il mondo tanto da essere scelti come dj resident per il party United Ants all’Ushuaïa di Ibiza. Proprietari di due etichette, Suruba e Suruba X hanno imposto, in giro per il mondo, il loro sound definito da loro stessi open mind.
Come vi siete incontrati la prima volta, e quando avete deciso di fare musica insieme?
Ci siamo incontrati all'”Istituto Europeo di Design” nel 2000. Delmar era stato un dj per alcuni anni prima di incontrarci e mi ha insegnato come suonare con il vinile, poi abbiamo studiato insieme nel corso di “electronic music production” presso la SAE a Madrid nel 2004. All’inizio abbiamo suonato e fatto musica separatamente, ma quando abbiamo iniziato il progetto Los Suruba nel 2009, è stato il momento in cui abbiamo deciso di iniziare a suonare e fare musica insieme.
Qual è il significato del vostro nome “Los Suruba”?
Dopo alcuni anni abbiamo deciso di fare le cose più seriamente e abbiamo creato il nostro marchio. Allo stesso tempo stavamo cercando un nome per questo, nel frattempo ho avuto la visita di mio cugino dal Brasile (intorno al 2004). Siamo andati fuori a festeggiare e ho iniziato a chiedergli i nomi brasiliani per il nostro marchio, e tra le idee che mi ha dato, quello che ho apprezzato di più è stato Suruba. Dissi che suonava in modo esotico, ma cosa significava? Mi ha detto che voleva dire orgia, ma una davvero selvaggia, e mi è piaciuto molto. Il giorno dopo l’ho detto ad Alvaro ed è così che è nato “Suruba”. Ci piace il nome non per il suo significato sessuale ma se si prende nel nostro ambiente è in grado di unire tutte le cose che ci piacciono: un’orgia di arte, musica, design combinato con animazione e persone di ogni tipo, colore e razza. Questo è ciò che significa Suruba per noi, più tardi abbiamo scoperto che Suruba era anche il nome della cappa romana dove si sono svolte tutte le feste e le orge. Quindi abbiamo scelto questo nome per la nostra etichetta e la gente ha iniziato a chiamarci “Los Suruba”, è stato uno sviluppo organico perché le persone ci hanno chiamato in quel modo, non noi.
Voi vivete ad Ibiza. Quanto è strategico e importante per un dj vivere lì?
Noi pensiamo che si tratta di un punto strategico, almeno durante l’estate, perché Ibiza è la Mecca della musica elettronica. Durante la stagione i migliori djs del mondo suonano qui regolarmente e la stagione qui decide più o meno in quale settore sarai nel corso dell’anno. Abbiamo deciso di trasferirci qui 3 anni fa per viverci tutto l’anno ed è stata una delle migliori scelte della nostra carriera. Il primo anno abbiamo suonato solo una volta in un party in barca, la stagione dopo abbiamo suonato 16 volte all’Ushuaïa, tra cui l’apertura e la festa di chiusura, quindi potete immaginare quanto sia stata importante questa mossa per noi.
Quando avete sentito il bisogno di fondare la vostra label Suruba X?
Suruba X è l’etichetta più scura e personale che abbiamo dove facciamo uscire musica senza il bisogno di raggiungere un alto range di vendite. Dal 2009, abbiamo pubblicato 8 uscite su vinile e 27 in digitale. Abbiamo sentito la necessità di iniziare perché ci piace un sacco di diversi stili di musica elettronica, non si concentrano su un solo stile. Non siamo i dj’s tipici che dicono “siamo dj’s techno” o “dj’s house” e suoniamo solo house, noi siamo di mentalità aperta.
Questa estate siete stati resident djs all’Ushuaïa per i party Ants. Com’è andata la vostra residenza lì? Raccontateci qualcosa in proposito.
L’ultima estate è stata davvero speciale per noi, il party, la gente, l’intera esperienza è stata incredibile! Ci sentiamo molto onorati di far parte della colonia. Ci sentiamo come se fosse non solo il party migliore dell’isola, ma in realtà uno dei migliori party del mondo. L’Ushuaïa è come la nostra casa.
Negli ultimi anni avete suonato in un sacco di clubs in giro per il mondo, per esempio avete suonato anche negli Stati Uniti. Tutti i dj che ci hanno suonato dicono che è sempre un’esperienza fantastica. Voi come avete trovato la scena musicale elettronica lì?
Ad essere onesti suonare negli Stati Uniti è stata una bella esperienza, ma pensiamo che la scena underground negli USA ha bisogno ancora di qualche anno per diventare potente.
In questo periodo pensate sia necessario per un dj, essere anche un produttore?
E’ un peccato, ma pensiamo così. In realtà, la maggior parte dei club ti prenotano perché sei un buon produttore, non perché suoni bene. E questo è un problema perché la maggior parte delle volte si va ad ascoltare un’artista che si conosce per le sue produzioni e poi quando lo senti suonare non è così bravo. Questo probabilmente perché è un produttore che è diventato famoso in fretta, rilasciando una hit per esempio, ma poi non dispone di esperienza necessaria come dj.
La stagione estiva si è conclusa, quali sono i vostri obiettivi per questo inverno?
Siamo molto contenti per la stagione ed entusiasti per l’inverno. Suoneremo in un sacco di paesi dove non siamo mai stati prima e suoneremo in molti nuovi club in cui non vediamo l’ora di suonare da molto tempo. Inoltre, faremo il nostro secondo tour sud americano dell’anno e torneremo alle Mauritius e in Sud Africa per suonare poi negli Stati Uniti e in Europa. Nel frattempo troveremo il tempo per lavorare in studio.[/tab]

Being able to understand what is best for themselves and how to do it is not for everyone. It know well by Delmar and Alvaro better known as Los Suruba. After meeting in the early 2000s they have studied together design then move on to study electronic music production in college. A few years later, after taking their solo careers, in 2009 they founded their new duo project Los Suruba that in a short time was enjoyed by thousands of people around the world so much to be chosen as resident djs for the party United Ants at Ushuaïa in Ibiza. Owners of two labels, Suruba and Suruba X they imposed around the world their sound defined by themselves, open mind.
How did you meet for the first time and when did you decide to make music together?
We met at the “Europ Insitute of Design” in 2000. Delmar had been djing for some years before we met and he taught me how to play with vinyl, then we studied “Electronic Music Production” at SAE in Madrid in 2004. At the beginning we played and made music separately but when we started the “Los Suruba project” in 2009, was the moment that we decided to start to play and make music together.
What’s the meaning of your name “Los Suruba”?
After a few years of doing parties, we decided to take things more serious and created our own brand. At the same time that we were looking for a name for it, meanwhile I had a visit from my cousin from Brazil (around 2004). We went out partying and I started asking him for Brazilian names for our brand, and amongst the ideas he gave me, the one I liked the most was ‘Suruba’, so I said ‘that sounds exotic but what does it mean?’ and he told me it meant ‘orgy, but a really wild one’ and I liked it a lot. The next day I told Alvaro and that is how ‘Suruba’ was born. We like the name, not for its sexual meaning but if you take it into our environment it can unite all the things we like: an orgy of art, music, design combined with entertainment and people of all kind, colour and race. That is what Suruba means to us, later on we found out that ‘Suruba’ also was the name of the Roman hood where all the parties and orgies were held. So because we chose this name for our label, people started calling us “Los Suruba”, it was an organic development as the crowd named us that way, not us.
You live in Ibiza. How much is strategic and important to live there, for a dj?
We think that it’s a strategic point, at least during summer, because Ibiza is the Mecca of electronic music. During the season the best djs in the world play here regularly and the season here decides more or less where you will be in the industry during the year. We decided to move here 3 years ago to live here the whole year and it was one of the best choices in our career. The first year we played just once on a boat party in the whole season, the season after we played 16 times in Ushuaïa, including the Opening and the Closing party, so you can imagine how important the move was for us.
When did you feel the necessity to start yours own label, Suruba X?
Suruba X it is the most dark and personal label we have, where we release music without an urge to reach a high rank in sales. Since 2009, we have published 8 releases on vinyl and 27 in digital. We felt the necessity to start it because we like a lot of different styles of electronic music, we aren’t focused only on one style, we are not the typical dj´s that say “we are techno dj’s” or “house dj’s” and we only play house music, we are open minded.
This summer you have been resident at Ushuaïa for Ants parties. How did your residency go there? Tell us something about it.
Last summer was really special for us; the party, the people, the whole experience was amazing! We feel very honored to be part of the colony. We feel like it’s not only the best party on the island, but actually one of the best parties in the world. Ushuaïa is like our home.
In latest years you have played in a lot of clubs around the world, for example you have played also in USA. Every dj who played there say is always a great experience. How did you find the electronic music scene there?
To be honest, to play in USA was a nice experience, but we think the underground scene in USA needs some more years to become powerful.
In this period, do you think is necessary for a dj, to be also a producer?
It ‘a pity, but we think so. In fact, most of the book club you because you are a good writer, not because it sounds good. And this is a problem because most of the time you go to listen to an artist who is known for his productions and then when you hear playing is not that good. This is probably because a producer who became famous quickly, releasing a hit for example, but then does not have necessary experience as a dj.
The summer season ended, what are your objectives for this winter?
We are super happy for the season and excited about the winter. We will be playing in a lot of countries that we have never been to before and will be playing in lot of new clubs that we have been looking forward to playing at for a long time. Also, we will be doing our second South American tour of the year and will be going back to Mauritius and South Africa to play, and then to USA and Europe. Meanwhile, we’ll find time to work in the studio.[/tab]
