Schietto, freddo e simpatico. Luomo si presenta così. Nel “mediterraneo del futuro”, così chiama la sua fredda Finlandia, affronta la vita ed il lavoro con un perenne easy going che fa quasi paura: i cambiamenti della vita sono semplicemente dettati dagli umori della mattina, i dischi escono fuori così, semplicemente, tanto per provare emozioni nuove. L’amore per la vita traspare in ogni sua parole: è l’imprevisto e la curiosità per quello che non si conosce che ne danno il giusto gusto. Sarà per questo che ha così tanti alter ego?
Vladislav Delay, Sistol, Uusitalo, Conoco, Luomo. La domanda nasce spontanea: come mai cosÏ tanti soprannomi e a cosa ti ispiri per trovarli?
La musica stessa mi ispira a trovare un nome per ogni progetto. Lavoro in così tanti e diversi campi della musica che ha senso per me dare a loro nomi diversi. Mi aiuta a concentrarmi meglio su ogniuno di loro, ed è anche giusto nell’ascolto: non a tutti piace ascoltare sia il free jazz che il vocal house. Identifica meglio i generi.
Iniziamo dagli inizi: quando hai deciso di affrontare la carriera da dj e produttore?
A circa 16 o 17 anni. Prima, dall’età di 5 anni, suonavo la batteria e le percussioni.
Quando e come nasce il personaggio di Luomo?
Ho iniziato con Luomo intorno al 2000 o poco prima. Fino ad allora facevo solo musica elettronica sperimentale ma ad un certo punto mi sono stancato di queste tonalità: volevo fare qualcosa di completamente diverso. In quel tempo avevo zero esperienza ed interesse per la musica dance o house o club music, ma me la sentivo intuitiva; la musica house era solo una cosa che volevo provare. Era anche il modo più semplice per incorporare influenze pop e vocals.
La tua musica, un mix di ambient, pop house molto ricercata, sembra venire dalle calde terre spagnole o sud americane, e non dalle fredde regioni della finlandia. Che emozioni ti da questo genere?
La Finlandia è il Mediterraneo del futuro! nessuna regione è più fredda …in ogni caso, mi sono sempre gettato in qualche cosa che potesse e sentissi mia, che mi piacesse, ma in generale non mi piace la musica fredda o meccanica. Piuttosto preferisco quella che trasmette emozioni e sentimenti, e che abbia un lato umano.
“Plus”, il quinto album firmato Luomo, sembra un viaggio nella musica degli anni ’80: sinth, bass line e drum kit sono gli stessi ascoltabili in qualunque canzone di quegli anni. Cosa ti appassiona di quegli anni?
Non ho mai realmente apprezzato la musica anni ’80. Ma mi sento sempre molto libero di fare musica come mi sento, questa volta in qualche modo ho scoperto questi anni. Non ero solito sentire o in altro modo non ero influenzato dalla musica anni ’80. Io in realtà non mi sono ancora reso conto che nel nuovo album ci siano rimandi degli anni ’80. Per me si trattava di usare suoni che non avevo ancora mai usato prima, e questa era la mia idea principale, cosiccome per le canzoni, gli arrangiamenti e la produzione, volevo farla in modi non ho fatto finora.
Oltre agli album firmati Luomo, escono sempre Ep con gli altri tuoi pseudonomi. Non hai mai pensato di concentrarti solo su di uno?
Mai.
Riprendendo la domanda precedente, in quale personaggio ti riconosci di più?
Se dovessi sceglierne uno, allora Vladislav Delay.
Uscirà a brevissimo il nuovo album. Hai già in serbo qualche novità per il futuro, qualche collaborazione?
Come sempre, ci sono nuove produzioni in corso. La prossima release sarà il nuovo album di Vladislav Delay su Raster Noton a metà Novembre.

Vladislav Delay, Systolic, Uusitalo, Conoco. Luomo. The question rises spontaneous: why so many nicknames and what inspires you to find them?
Music itself inspires me to come up with a name for each project. I work with so many different fields of music that it makes sense to give them different names. it helps me to focus on them and it also is fair for the listener, not everyone likes to listen both free jazz and vocal house.
Starting from the beginning: When have you decided to start the career of producer?
At about the age of 16 or 17. Before that i was playing drums and percussion since the age of 5.
When and how does the character Luomo?
I started Luomo at around year 2000 or little bit before. Until then i was only doing experimental electronic music and at one point got kind of bored of that and wanted to do something totally different. At that point i had zero experience or interest in dance or house or club music, it just happened intuitively; house music seemed like a thing i wanted to try out. It also was easiest way to incorporate pop influences and use vocals.
Your music is a mix of ambient, pop, and house mmusic. It seems come from the hot Spanish or South American lands, not from the cold regions of Finland. What emotions give you this genre?
Finland is the Mediterranean of the future! No more cold region anyway, I throw in anything i can and feel like, but in general i don’t like cold or mechanical music but rather one with emotions and feelings and human side in it.
“Plus,” the fifth album signed Luomo, it seems a trip to the 80s music: synth, bass line and drum kit are the same heard in any songs of those years. What are you passionate about those years?
I actually never liked 80s music. But i feel very free to do music as i feel like, this time somehow it turned out like this. I wasn’t listening or otherwise influenced by 80s music. I actually didn’t realize the new album has 80s feel to is. For me it’s about using sounds i haven’t used before, that was my main idea for it, and also to otherwise do songs, arrangements, production in ways i haven’t done so far.
In addition to the albums signe Luomo, come out continuously Ep with your other pseudonyms. Have you ever think to focus only on one?
Never.
Connected to the previous question, in wich character do you recognize more?
If i had to pick one then Vladislav Delay.
The new album will be released soon. Have you already some news for the future, some collaboration?
As always, there are new productions going on. Next release will be new Vladislav Delay album on Raster Noton in mid-November.
