Quello che è successo in pochissimo tempo a Miguel Campbell, influenzato negli anni da Giorgio Moroder e dai Daft Punk, capace di imporre il suo unico stile diventando uno degli uomini più titolati della slowhouse targata Hot Creations. Un legame non vincolante visto che i suoi progetti attuali vanno oltre, tra collaborazioni varie e la conduzione della sua etichetta, Outcross Records. Ce ne parla brevemente in questo botta e risposta…
La tua definitiva consacrazione di quest’anno ha permesso di farti apprezzare in tutto il mondo, ma sono ancora poche le informazioni riguardanti la tua crescita musicale negli anni. Vuoi parlarcene?
Ho iniziato a fare il dj nel club in cui ero solito andare da giovane e mi sono avvicinato all’house dopo aver iniziato a frequentare i clubs a Leeds e Manchester. Prima ero un dj hip-hop e seppure ultimamente non si suoni molto questo genere, nella maggior parte dei miei dj set troverete elementi rap.
Molti ti hanno definito il producer più talentuoso di quest’anno. Che effetto ti fa sentire l’affetto di tanta gente in poco tempo?
E’ incredibile avere un grande riscontro da così tante persone. Ho lavorato duramente per raggiungere tutto questo, ritengo quasi una benedizione essere considerato come uno dei migliori.
Lo sai, la domanda è scontata ma è d’obbligo. “Something Special” è stata la hit che ti ha fatto conoscere in tutto il mondo (su Youtube hai raggiunto più di 4 milioni e mezzo di visualizzazioni!). Vuoi raccontarci la genesi di questa traccia? Ti aspettavi così tanto successo?
Sapevo che avrebbe fatto bene, ma onestamente non pensavo avrebbe avuto tale impatto sulla nostra cultura e sulla mia carriera. Quando sono arrivato ad Ibiza l’anno scorso ho capito che “Something Special” sarebbe diventato un gran disco.
Noi più di tanti altri conosciamo la carriera di Giorgio Moroder, una figura che per te rappresenta quasi un esempio e fonte di ispirazione. Quale pensi sia stata la sua vera innovazione e in cosa ti rivedi nel tuo modo di rifare musica?
E’ la carriera di Giorgio Moroder ad essere fonte di ispirazione per me. Adoro il modo in cui ha sperimentato il proprio sound e ha contribuito a produrre artisti così diversi e ad agevolarne il successo.
Sappiamo del tuo prossimo album in uscita su Hot Creations. Quali sono gli altri obiettivi e propositi per il tuo futuro e quello della tua “Outcross Records”?
Dopo il mio album, il mio obiettivo principale sarà portare avanti la mia etichetta, Outcross Records e la mia collaborazione con Matt Hughes. Abbiamo tanti progetti per il futuro, andremo passo dopo passo in modo tale da realizzare tutti i nostri sogni.
Non hai nemmeno mai nascosto la tua passione per i Daft Punk, con i quali sogni di collaborare. Quale pensi possa essere il punto di incontro nel vostro modo di fare musica?
Lavorare con i Daft Punk sarebbe fantastico, loro sono stati una vera ispirazione per me e Matt Hughes (il mio compagno in MAM). Ci viene spesso detto che abbiamo un suono simile a loro perché usiamo tecniche in studio simili in materia di mixaggio e dinamica.
Quest’anno hai già avuto modo di confrontarti con il pubblico italiano tra Milano, Firenze e Reggio Emilia, solo per citarne alcune…che sensazioni hai avuto?
E’ sempre bello suonare in Italia. Le locations e i soundsystems sono davvero buoni e le persone sono fantastiche. L’unica cosa è che la gente non esce fino a tarda notte e qualche volta vorrei che gli eventi si svolgessero prima, ma quando inizia il party è sempre molto divertente.
Come vedi il futuro della House music? Secondo te quale direzione prenderà nei prossimi anni?
Penso che la musica House sia sicuramente in crescita, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la musicalità. Le produzioni saranno sempre migliori finchè gli artisti continueranno a fare musica house. Poi penso che la scena si tufferà nuovamente nel minimalismo, ma con un tocco un pò più disco. Forse meno strumenti o suoni diversi.

This is what happened in a very short time to Miguel Campbell, raised from England and influenced over the years by Giorgio Moroder and Daft Punk, he has imposed his style became one of the top men of Hot Creations. We talked about all these things in this short interview…
We appreciate you all over the world in this year, but there are still little few info about your musical growth over the years. Do you want to talk about that?
I began djing at my local youth club and I got into house music after I began clubbing in Leeds and Manchester. I started off as a hip-hop dj but very rarely play hip hop these days but you can find rap elements in most of my dj sets.
Many journalists and artist say you are the most talented producer of 2012? How is to have all this good words by the people in a short time?
It is amazing to have the great feedback from so many people, this is something I have worked hard to achieve so feel blessed to be regarded as one of the best.
You know, the question is obvious. “Something Special” is a hit all over the world (you have reached more than 4.5 million views on Youtube!). Do you want to tell us about the birth of this track? Did you expect so much success?
I knew that it would do quite well but honestly did not think that it would have the impact that it has had on our culture and my career. It was whilst out in ibiza last year, it became apparent that “Something Special” was going to be a great record.
We know that one of your main influences was Giorgio Moroder. According to you, what was his real innovation and what you take from him for your way to make music?
It is the career of Giorgio Moroder that has been an inspiration to me. I adore the way that he pioneered his own sound and helped to produce so many different artists and assist with their success.
We know of your next album coming out on Hot Creations. What are your aims and intentions for your future (also from your label “Outcross Records”).
Following my album, my main focus will be on my label Outcross Records and my partnership with Matt Hughes. We have so many plans for the future and so we will be taking things step by step in order for our dreams to be realized.
You don’t hide your passion for Daft Punk, you dream to collaborate with them. What do you think is the meeting point among you in the way you make music?
Working with Daft Punk would be amazing as they have been a true inspiration to both myself and Matt Hughes (my partner in MAM). We are often told that we have a similar sound to them because we use similar studio tecniques in respect of mixing and dynamics.
This year you had the chance to play in Italy with many gigs in Milan, Florence and Reggio Emilia, just to name a few… what feeling you had?
It is always great to play in Italy. The venues and soundsystems are really good and the people are great. The only thing is that people don’t go out until late in the night and I sometimes wish the events would get going earlier, but when they do get going, it is always good fun.
How can you see the future of house music? In your opinion which direction house music will take in the next years?
I think house music is definitely on the up and with a lot more going on in respect of the musicallity. I think that the production of music will improve as more and more producers are making house music. Then I think the scene will take another dip towards minimalism but with more of a disco feel. Maybe less instruments or different sounds.
