[tab title=”Italiano”]“Forget”, uno dei più grandi successi dance dello scorso anno, ha anche lanciato a livello mondiale la carriera del suo giovanissimo autore Patrick Topping. Abbiamo colto l’occasione di fare la sua conoscenza e di sapere qualcosa di più riguardo anche i suoi progetti per il futuro che, tra i vari appuntamenti, vedono anche una sua esibizione al Paradise Stage del We Are FSTVL il 31 Maggio prossimo ad Upminster nell’Essex.
Quanto è cambiata la tua vita dopo l’uscita del tuo brano “Forget”?
Le cose sono cresciute costantemente nel corso di circa un anno prima dell’uscita di “Forget” dal momento che durante di quel periodo ho prodotto tre altri EP, per cui non si può dire che “Forget” sia saltata fuori dal nulla, anche se devo ammettere che da quando è uscita le cose hanno preso di molto velocità.
Suppongo che il potenziale di hit trasversale di quel tuo brano sia stato chiaro fin dall’inizio. Te lo aspettavi però un successo di quelle proporzioni?
No, per niente! Quando l’ho prodotto ero cosciente del fatto che fosse uno dei miei pezzi più forti e sapevo che l’avrei sicuramente incluso nei miei sets ma non ero sicuro che avrei trovato una label disposta a darlo alle stampe. Non appena Jamie Jones l´ha sentito però mi ha subito incoraggiato dicendomi che era in assoluto la mia produzione migliore, da quel punto in poi ho cominciato a pensare che avrebbe potuto fare bene, ma non avrei mai immaginato che potesse raggiungere un successo così grosso come quello che ha poi ottenuto.
Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa a proposito della tua residenza al DC10 la scorsa estate?
Quello è stato un sogno che è diventato realtà visto che il DC10 è il mio club preferito in tutto il mondo. Ogni volta che ho suonato lì mi sono sentito come a casa. Il pubblico è uno dei migliori e rende il lavoro dietro alla consolle un vero piacere.
Immagino che sia stata un’esperienza speciale per te quella di trovarti ad Ibiza proprio nel momento in cui il successo di “Forget” stava raggiungendo la sua fase più calda
Oh si! È stata una cosa pazzesca. La ascoltavi letteralmente ovunque, non solo nei clubs ma anche nei bars, nei ristoranti, sui taxi! È stata un esperienza surreale.
Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa a proposito della tua collaborazione con Green Velvet? Come è stato lavorare con una leggenda di quel livello?
È stato un gran onore poter lavorare con lui. È uno dei miei artisti preferiti per cui realizzare “Voicemail” è stata veramente un esperienza incredibile ed una delle cose che professionalmente mi rendono più orgoglioso. È sempre gentile, rilassato e molto divertente per cui la collaborazione è stata anche molto piacevole. Nonostante non abbiamo avuto la possibilità di trovarci assieme in studio, dal momento che lui in quel periodo lavorava nel suo studio di Chicago mentre io mi trovavo a Newcastle, abbiamo parlato molto al telefono e via Skype e questo ci ha permesso di lavorare alle varie parti del brano insieme ed in tempo reale. È pazzesco se pensi a quanto velocemente quella traccia è stata prodotta, solamente in un paio di giorni. Sono molto contento di come è riuscita bene.
Jamie Jones ha avuto un ruolo importante nel tuo successo. Siete ancora in contatto? Avete in programma una qualche collaborazione in futuro?
Si certamente. Lui è il primo al quale faccio sentire la mia musica e proprio in questo momento stiamo lavorando ad una traccia in collaborazione. Inoltre suono spesso ai suoi parties Paradise per cui ho anche la possibilità di incontrarlo spesso anche lì.
Sò che anche Sven Väth e Luciano sono due dei tuoi eroi musicali. Hai mai avuto la possibilità di incontrarli di persona?
Ho incontrato Sven per caso circa tre anni fa, come semplice fan gli chiesi di posare in una foto insieme in un club di Miami, ma a parte questo non li ho mai veramente incontrati.
Guardandoti indietro, rimpiangi per un motivo o l’altro la scena dei club di Newcastle, la città dove hai iniziato la tua carriera?
In effetti io continuo ad organizzare parties a Newcastle, in genere cinque all’anno. È una cosa che amo fare visto che sono sempre delle grandissime serate nelle quali ho la possibilità di portare artisti che amo nella mia città ed ho anche la possibilità di suonare al loro fianco.
Parlando più in generale del Regno Unito, qual è la tua opinione riguardo alla scena legata ai clubs ed alla dance al momento?
È incredibile. Secondo la mia esperienza suonando in giro per il mondo in svariati paesi e potendo essere testimone diretto delle varie scene musicali, devo dire che il mio paese è tra i più forti. Ognuna delle principali città è piena di eventi che fanno il pienone ogni settimana ed anche le città più piccole stanno cominciando ad avere delle scene interessanti. È una vera esplosione.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il 2015?
Ho della nuova musica che sta per uscire su Hot Creations e forse anche su Hottrax. Speriamo anche che il brano in collaborazione con Jamie possa venire pubblicato. Oltre a questi forse ci sarà ancora una release su un’altra etichetta. Per quel che riguarda i tour invece suonerò a molti festivals ed in alcune città in cui non sono ancora stato e prevedo che sarà un’altra estate molto eccitante per quel che riguarda Ibiza.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]“Forget”, one of the biggest dance hits of the last year also sent to the next level the career of its young producer Patrick Topping. We took the chance to get to know him and to know something more about his future plans which, among the many other, will include a gig at the Paradise stage at We Are FSTVL the 31th of May in Upminster, Essex.
How much your life has changed since the huge success of “Forget”?
Things had been steadily building for about one year before “Forget” was released, as I had three other EPs released in the space of twelve months leading up to the release of “Forget”, so it wasn’t exactly an overnight thing around that track, but obviously when that dropped it did pick things even faster for sure.
I suppose the crossover hit potential of that track was clear to see from the start. But did you expect the kind of succes it actually had?
No, not at all! When I made it, I knew it was one of the stronger tracks that I had done and it would certainly go into my sets, but I wasn’t sure that it would be signed. Although soon as Jamie Jones heard it, he said it was my biggest track yet, so at that point I started thinking “Maybe it could do well”, but I never imagined it would be as well as it was.
Can you tell us something about your residency at DC10 last summer?
That was a dream come true, as it’s my favourite club in the world. Every time I played, I felt really at ease and comfortable playing there. The crowd is also one of the best anywhere, so it makes playing such a pleasure.
I guess it was quite an experience for you being in Ibiza right at the time when the success of “Forget” was happening?
Yeah it was crazy! Literally heard it everywhere, not just in the clubs, in the bars, the restaurants, taxis! That was quite a surreal experience.
Can you tell us something about your collaboration with Green Velvet? How was working with a legend like him?
That was such an honour working with him. He is one of my favourite artists, so making “Voicemail” with him was so cool for me. It was such an amazing experience and one of my proudest moments as an artist myself. He is so nice and chilled, and also really funny, so it was really enjoyable. Although we didn’t sit in the studio together, as we worked separately, him in his studio in Chicago and me in mine in Newcastle, we did speak a lot on the phone and Skype, to allow us to work things out in real time. It’s actually mad how that track came together so quickly, in a couple days, I’m so happy with how it worked out.
Jamie Jones had a big role in your breakthrough. Are you still in touch with him? Do you plan any collaboration in the future?
Yeah of course, I still send all my music to him first and we are actually working on a collaboration track together at the moment too. It’s wicked because now I’m playing a lot of his Paradise parties too, so get to see him often at those also.
I know that Sven Väth and Luciano are also two of your musical heroes. Do you already had the chance to meet them too?
I met Sven like 3 years ago randomly, when I was asking for a photo with him as a fan in a club in Miami, but no I haven’t ever met either of them properly.
In retrospect, do you miss in a way or another the club scene in Newcastle, the city in which you started your career?
I actually still promote parties in Newcastle, we usually do about 5 of those per year. which I love, as it always a really great gig and its cool to be able to bring artists I love to my home city and play along side them.
Talking about UK, what’s your opinion about the British club and dance music scene at the moment?
It’s amazing, from my experience of playing around the world at various countries and experiencing their music scenes, I’ve got to say at the UK is up there with the strongest. Every major city is thriving with packed out events each week and even the smaller towns are now starting to have healthy scenes too. It is really exploding here.
What’s your plans for 2015?
I have some new music coming out on Hot Creations and maybe Hottrax, hopefully that track with Jamie will come out, then maybe a release on a different label as well. Then tour wise I’m playing so many festivals and new cities and Ibiza is looking really exciting this summer too.[/tab]
