[tab title=”Italiano”]Quando si parla di musica ci si può riferire a molte cose legate ad essa, ma a un fruitore occasionale può sfuggire la mole di lavoro che c’è dietro. L’industria musicale di qualsiasi genere è sempre in continuo movimento e riuscire a lavorarci non è assolutamente facile nemmeno per i professionisti del settore. Lo sanno bene Santé e Sidney Charles con cui abbiamo scambiato alcune parole riguardo ai loro progetti come l’ultima release “House Lessons” su Avotre, una label che sta facendo un percorso molto importante e che ha molte cose in cantiere. Grazie alla loro costanza e naturalmente alla loro bravura, in pochi anni, Santé e Sidney stanno scalando le classifiche degli store di musica elettronica, e stanno suonando nei migliori club del mondo con il loro stile house che li caratterizza.
Perché hai scelto Sidney per l’ultimo album su Avotre?
Santé: E’ stato il momento perfetto per noi e per Sidney per capitalizzare la sua popolarità e il suo suono. E’ bello dare a un artista di talento come lui una piattaforma dove può mostrare le sue abilità e la sua visione. Soprattutto su un formato LP in cui puoi giocare con diversi generi e stili.
Com’è stato lavorare su questo album per Avotre?
Sidney: E’ stato un piacere e una sfida allo stesso tempo. All’inizio non ero sicuro di essere pronto per un progetto come questo, ma proprio l’insicurezza è stata una grande motivazione per superare questo problema. Alla fine mi sono divertito un sacco nella sperimentazione di nuovi stili di cui non ero abbastanza coraggioso di provare prima. Sono molto felice anche per le collaborazioni che sono venute fuori mentre stavo lavorando su “House Lessons”. Durante il processo creativo stavo cercando di trovare anche nuove fonti di ispirazione che potevano dare nuove idee per le tracce. Alla fine sono rimasto molto soddisfatto del risultato e credo che sia stato un passo importante sfidare me stesso con un progetto come questo, sono sicuro che lo farò altre volte.
Come riesci a gestire la label insieme ai tuoi impegni come dj e produttore?
Santé: Io sono il direttore artistico, A&R e supervisore, ma non vorrei essere lì se tutta la squadra non avesse fatto un ottimo lavoro come questo, fino ad ora. Dal label manager, dal designer fino all’agente di booking che organizza gli showcase Avotre e gli stage dei festival per noi. Se ho un’idea in mente ci vuole tutta la squadra per realizzarla.
Perché hai intitolato l’album “House Lessons”? E’ un titolo provocatorio? Vuoi dire qualcosa con questo album?
Sidney: “House Lessons” si riferisce alla mia prima uscita chiave con lo stesso nome, che mi ha portato al livello successivo del mio percorso musicale. “House Lessons” è stato rilasciato nell 2013 su Avotre ed era la mia prima uscita chiave che ha portato maggiore attenzione su di me da parte dei grandi nomi della scena. Così ho trovato il nome appropriato per un progetto come questo, che ha lo stesso significato personale per me. Non è provocante affatto. Non voglio dire che io sono così bravo, con quello che sto facendo, che posso dare alla gente una lezione di house music. Penso che solo le leggende sono autorizzate a farlo. Con questo nome volevo dire che con l’house music si può insegnare qualcosa, se hai capito le radici e tutto il movimento dietro di esso. In questo modo si può imparare qualcosa di positivo dalla partecipazione a questo movimento. Penso che la scena house underground è una delle più tolleranti che ho conosciuto e dalla mia prospettiva mi piace essere coinvolto in qualcosa che è di mentalità aperta.
Possiamo immaginare l’enorme quantità di tracce che ti arrivano per la tua label. Con quale criterio scegli i dischi da far uscire?
Santé: E’ piuttosto semplice, se posso suonarle nel mio dj set e mi cattura fin dall’inizio, allora sono interessato! Così passo ore ad ascoltare le demo.
Come lavori sulle tue tracce? Quando sei in studio completi una traccia subito o preferisci tornarci sopra più volte?
Sidney: Di solito ho un’idea grezza in mente, nella direzione in cui il mio prossimo brano dovrebbe andare. Inizio sempre con il groove in modo che possa avere qualcosa da costruire. Durante il processo di creazione di una traccia normalmente niente è lo stesso. Il mio flusso creativo per il passo successivo è quello che sto seguendo durante la mia sessione. Torno sui brani più volte, soprattutto durante il mixaggio del progetto per rendere il suono corretto. Non sono in grado di separare completamente la miscelazione e la produzione. Devo sempre farlo nella stessa sessione. Ho anche imparato una lezione molto importante: rinuncia se non vai avanti. Credo che un vero produttore conosce questa situazione, in cui si è incollati a certe idee che non ti stanno portando da nessuna parte, ma in qualche modo pensi che ci possa essere qualcosa di utile alla fine. Sicuramente sa quando fermarsi e iniziare con una nuova idea che darà una nuova energia creativa.
Avotre è una label di qualità, secondo te oltre a rilasciare buona musica quali sono le caratteristiche che deve avere una buona label per definirsi tale?
Santé: Penso che si dovrebbe avere una visione saggia della musica e un marchio visivo, dal logo all’artwork e, in futuro, per la scenografia. Tutte le parti devono lavorare mano nella mano, e devono avere un tema coerente che li attraversa.
Nell’album ci sono molti remix, chi ha scelto gli artisti e perché proprio loro?
Sidney: Ho scelto gli artisti insieme a Santé. I nomi che compaiono nell’album sono principalmente amici e penso che la musica che fanno è veramente bella. Gli stili che fanno sono unici nella scena. Questo è anche quello che volevo per “House Lessons”. Volevo uno stile unico che è anche diverso dal mio. Se fosse un mixtape con solo la mia musica, diventerebbe noioso rapidamente. Quindi penso che i remix conferiscono una spezia speciale e un sapore unico.
Oltre all’album “House Lessons”, per te com’è lavorare con Sidney?
Santé: Assolutamente fantastico!
Per te com’è lavorare con Santé e la sua label?
Sidney: E’ scellerato. E’ davvero bello avere qualcuno al tuo fianco che ha quasi la stessa immaginazione di stili musicali. Il nostro modo di lavorare è per lo più in armonia e possiamo anche fare cose fastidiose per poi fare qualcosa di divertente. Sono davvero felice che Santé mi ha chiesto sin dall’inizio se avessi voluto partecipare al processo lavorativo della sua etichetta ed è una bella sensazione costruire qualcosa da zero e vederlo crescere. Ho anche imparato molto da lui. E’ sulla scena da molto più tempo di me, e mi dà un sacco di consigli utili e mi ha mostrato come funziona la scena anche nel background.
Era il 2012 quando veniva rilasciata su Avotre la tua “Homegirl” che fu una vera e propria hit. Dal 2012 è passato molto tempo e sono cambiate molte cose. Come vedi il tuo futuro e quello della tua label? Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?
Santé: Stiamo cercando di inserire più artisti all’ interno e dare loro l’opportunità di rilasciare alcuni album, anche se non si tratta più di un formato comune. Ma è ottimo per ogni artista di avere una piattaforma dove può mostrare le sue abilità. Vogliamo anche lanciare una serie di compilation e un radioshow. I live show sono molto importanti per noi, stiamo costruendo alcune residenze in posti che ci piacciono a livello internazionale.
Cosa stai programmando per il futuro dopo “House Lessons”? Dove ti vedremo impegnato?
Sidney: Ho un progetto entusiasmante che verrà fuori insieme a Darius Syrossian e Santé. Per quanto riguarda il nostro “Tribal Session Residency” al Sankeys di Ibiza stiamo facendo un tour in autobus a chiamato “Road to Tribal Sessions”. Faremo un giro anche in un sacco di posti nel Regno Unito e alcuni in Europa. Il tour si concluderà a Ibiza con l’apertura del Sankeys a metà Maggio. Da allora in poi mi troverete sull’isola durante l’intera estate perché suonerò al Sankeys. Come ho detto avrò anche un altro grande progetto musicale come “House Lessons” in arrivo, ma voglio aspettare di più fino a quando sarò pronto ad affrontare un’altra sfida come questa.[/tab]
[tab title=”English”]When it comes to music you can refer to many things related to it, but to an occasional user can escape the amount of work behind. The music industry of any kind is always in constant motion and be able to work is not so easy even for professionals. Well aware are Santé and Sidney Charles with we exchanged a few words about their projects as the latest release “House Lessons” on Avotre, a label that is making a path very important and has many things in the pipeline. Thanks to their perseverance and of course to their ability, in few years, Santé and Sidney are climbing the charts of the stores of electronic music, and they are playing in the best clubs in the world with their house style that characterizes them.
Why did you choose Sydney for the last album on Avotre?
Santé: It was the perfect timing for us and for Sidney to capitalize on his popularity and on his sound. It’s great to give a talented artist like him a platform, where he can show his skill and vision. Especially on a LP format where you can play with different genres and styles.
How was working on this album for Avotre?
Sidney: It was a pleasure and a challenge at the same time. In the beginning I was not sure about me being ready for a project like this, but exactly this insecurity was also a big motivation to overcome this problem. In the end, I had a lot of fun in the experimentation of new styles that I was not brave enough to try out before. I am also really happy about the collaborations that came out while I was working on “House Lessons”. During the creative process I was also trying to find new inspiration sources that could gave new ideas for tracks. In the end i was very satisfied with the result, and I think it was an important step to challenge myself with a project like this and I’m sure I will do this other time again.
How do you manage the label together with your commitments as dj and producer?
Santé: I am the art director, A&R and supervisor for it. But I wouldn’t be there if the whole team hasn’t been doing such an excellent job till now. From label manager, from designer and the booking agent that organises Avotre showcase and festival stages for us. If I have an idea in mind it takes the whole team to make it happen.
Why did you call the album “House Lessons”? Is it a provocative title? Would you like say something with this album?
Sidney: “House Lessons” refers to my first key release with the same name which brought me to the next level of my musical journey. “House Lesson” was released in 2013 on Avotre and it was my first key release which brought more attention on me from the big names of the scene. So i found the name appropriate for a project like this, which has the same personal meaning to me. It is not provocative at all. I also don’t want to say that I’m so advanced with what I am doing that I can give people a lesson of house music. I think only the legends are allowed to do so.I also wanted to say with this name, that with house music itself can teach you something, if you understood the roots and the whole movement behind it. So you can learn something positive from participating in this movement. I think the underground house music scene is one of the most tolerant I’ve known and from my own perspective, I like to be involved in something which is open-minded.
We can imagine the huge amount of tracks that arrive to you for your label. How do you choose the tracks to release?
Santé: It’s pretty simple, if I can play them in my dj sets and they catch me from the beginning, then I’m interested! So I spend hours listening to demos.
How do you work on your tracks? When you are in the studio, do you prefer complete a track immediately or do you return on it several times?
Sidney: I normally have raw idea in mind, in which direction my next track should go. I always start with the groove so I can have something to build on. During the process of making a track normally nothing is the same. My creative flow to the next step is what i am following during my session. I definitely go back to tracks several times especially while mixing the project to make it sound proper. I am not able to separate mixing and producing completely. I always have to do in the same session. But I also learned a very important lesson: Give up if you don’t come forward. I think a real producer knows this situation, where you are stick on certain ideas that are not bringing you anywhere but you somehow think that there can be something useful in the end. So you definitely know when to stop and than rather start with a new idea that will give you new creative energy.
Avotre is a label of quality. According to you, in addition to release good music, what are the characteristics that must have a good label to be defined as such?
Santé: I think you should have a music vision wise and a visual trademark, from the logo to the artwork and in future for stage design. All the parts need to work hand in hand, and have a coherent theme running through them.
In the album there are many remixes, who chose the artists and why them?
Sidney: I chose the artist together with Santé. The names that appear on the album are mainly friends and I think the music they make is really good. The styles they make is unique in the scene. This is also what I wanted for “House Lessons”. I wanted a unique style that is also different from my own. If it was just a mixtape with only my own music, it would get boring quickly. So I think the remixes give it a special spice and unique flavor in the end.
Besides album “House Lessons”, how is working with Sidney?
Santé: Absolutely great!
How is work with Santé and his label?
Sidney: It’s wicked. It’s really cool to have someone on your side that has almost the same imagination of musical styles. So our working-process is mostly in harmony and we can even make annoying things to something fun. I’m really happy that Santé asked me from beginning on whether I wanted to participate in the working-processes of his label and it’s a good feeling to build something up from the scratch and seeing it grow. I have also learned a lot from him. He is in the scene for much more time than I am, and he gives me heaps of useful advices and he showed me how the scene also works in the background.
It was 2012 when your “Homegirl” was released on Avotre, which was a real hit. Since 2012, much time has passed and many things have changed. How do you see your future and that of your label? Which are your future plans?
Santé: We are trying to built more artists in the inner circle and give them the opportunity to release some albums, even though this is not a common format any more. But it’s great for every artist to have a platform where he can show his skills. We also want to launch a compilation series and and a radioshow. The live shows are also very important to us, so we are building some residencies in places we enjoy internationally.
What are you planning for the future after “House Lessons”? Where will we see you engaged?
Sidney: I have an exciting project, it coming up together with Darius Syrossian and Santé as well. In the context of our “Tribal Session Residency” at Sankeys Ibiza we are making a bus tour to called “Road to Tribal Sessions”. We will make a tour though a lot of places in the Uk and some in Europe as well. The tour will end in Ibiza with the Sankeys opening in mid of May. From then on, you can find me on the island during the whole summer cause I’m going to playing at Sankeys. As I said I’m sure I will also have another bigger musical project like “House Lessons” coming up, but I want to wait more until I’ll be ready to take on another challenge like this.[/tab]
