Tra gli ospiti del M.I.T festival Alfred Darlinghton in arte Daedelus, geniale artigiano musicale dalle giacche ultracolorate… Vediamo cosa ci racconta nell’intervista pre-festival…
Le tue produzioni sono il connubio perfetto tra elettronica contemporanea e la musica campionata di ieri, in particolare l’hip hop, molto presente nelle tue composizioni. Come è nata l’idea di miscelare questi stili musicali?
Grazie per le belle parole, nonostante io debba ammettere che non credo di aver avuto “un’ idea”, sono stato semplicemente un prodotto dell’ ambiente in cui sono vissuto.
Quella cresciuta a Los Angeles non è stata una “mono cultura”, ci sono così tante persone diverse che arrivano con la loro musica, o in competizione, che è stato facile appassionarsi all’ hip hop o all’elettronica ecc ecc. Sento che la cosa migliore che io possa fare per valorizzare tutta questo “bagaglio” è abbandonarmi a tutte le diverse influenze più che posso e semplicemente lasciare che la musica faccia il suo corso. Io la servo.
Artigiano dei tuoi pezzi, inventore e costruttore di “scatole magiche” che caratterizzano i tuoi live barocchi e allo stesso tempo iper moderni. Da dove viene fuori questa passione e come hai imparato a maneggiare componenti elettroniche?
Ho solo dato una piccola mano per il Monome “Magic Box” ma realmente l’invenzione è di Brian Crabtree ed è una cosa che volevo puntualizzare da tempo. Io l’ho già usato qualche volta in giro per il mondo, ma questa è una virtù legata solo al fatto che ce ne sono pochissimi esemplari.
Ogni Monome è fatto a mano quindi Brian e sua moglie impiegano molto tempo per produrne uno. Ma lo spirito del Monome è una fantastica idea “open source”, e sono orgoglioso di condividerlo.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?
Vorrei poter arrivare al prossimo concerto, alla prossima registrazione, alla prossima scena, alla prossima alla prossima…questo sarebbe abbastanza bello.
Presto sarò a Roma per il Meet In Town, nel passaggio dal mio precedente disco “Righeous Fists of Harmony” al nuovo “Bespoke” per la Ninjatune, poi di ritorno alla mia amata Santa Monica, a Los Angeles, e infine vedrò cosa mi aspetta nel futuro.
Quest’anno sei di nuovo ospite di casa Mit e della capitale romana, al fianco di altri artisti della scena alternativa internazionale. Cosa ne pensi della scelta di un “one-day festival” rispetto alla rassegna dei tre anni precedenti?
Una giornata è una fantastica opportunità per chi ha orecchie coraggiose e poco tempo per stare in un posto.
Mi piacerebbe incoraggiare gli ascoltatori a girare per le sale alla ricerca del loro sound e di cose mai sentite.

Your works are a perfect mix of contemporary electronic music and yesterday’s sampled music, especially hip hop, which is constantly present in your pieces. How did you develop the idea of mixing these different styles?
Thank you for your kind words, however I must admit I don’t believe I had an idea as much as I was just a product of my environment. You see growing up in Los Angeles wasn’t a mono-culture, you had so many different people and their musics coming together, or competing for your attention that it was easy to get obsessed with HipHop or Electro or on and on. I feel like the best I can do to honor this upbringing is to surrender to these different influences as much as possible and just let the music be however many combinations it wants. I serve it.
As the creator of your pieces, you build these “magic boxes” that characterize your baroque and ultra-modern performances. where did you get this passion from and how did you learn how to handle electronic components?
I only had a very small hand in the Monome “Magic Box” it really is the invention of Brian Crabtree who I meant long ago mostly by chance. I have indeed been using it around the world for sometime, but that is only a virtue of scarcity. Each Monome is made by hand, so Brian and his wife take a long while to produce units. But the spirit of the Monome is a fantastic open source idea, and I am proud to share it. (more info and videos at Monome.org)
What are your future plans?
I wish that I can get to the next gig / next record / next scene / next next, that would wonderful enough. Soon in Rome for Meet In Town, soon from my previous record “Righeous Fists of Harmony” for Brainfeeder to my next “Bespoke” for Ninjatune, soon back to my beloved Santa Monica, Los Angeles, soon for what lies ahead.
You’re once again host at Mit in Rome this year, together with other artists from the international alternative music scene. What do you think of the idea of a “one-day festival” compared to the past years’ events?
One day is a fantastic opportunity for brave ears and little time to dwell in one place. I’d encourage listeners to roam the halls in search for their sounds and sounds never-heard. The best in the world will be on offer, take courage and advantage of it! I hope to meet you there.
