L’appellativo che mi sembra più adatto per descrivere Guti è sicuramente “eroe dei due mondi”. In questo caso non si parla certamente di imprese militari, ma di importanti risultati in campo musicale. Cresciuto in una famiglia con la musica nel sangue Guti intraprende una crescita musicale molto particolare. Da giovane è un autodidatta del pianoforte e poco dopo viene contaminato da una forte onda blues che lo porterà in futuro a diventare molto famoso in Sud America come componente di alcune rock band. Si esibisce un po’ ovunque in quei paesi latini riscuotendo un enorme successo, ma la notorietà non sembra soddisfarlo. La sua vita sembra guidata da una forte necessità di scoperta e del completo rifiuto per la monotonia e per questo nelle pause che gli concedeva la sua carriera rock si avvicina ad altri mondi, tra i quali i ritmi latini della salsa, il jazz e l’elettronica. Trovatosi un po’ per caso in uno studio a sperimentare su house beat di vario genere è oggi catapultato al centro del movimento techno-house di stampo tedesco. Trasferitosi dal Sud America a Dusseldorf (sede di Desolat) è oggi uno degli esponenti di spicco della label fondata da Loco Dice e Martin Buttrich. Il suo amore per la scoperta non è sicuramente secondo alla nostra voglia di saperne di più sul suo conto e per questo andiamo a sentire cosa ha da raccontarci.
Ciao Guti, benvenuto su Soundwall.
Una vita movimentata, dal rock in Argentina all’elettronica in Europa. Come è avvenuta questa trasformazione?
E’ stato un percorso naturale, da fuori potrà sembrare una pazzia, ma per me era solo musica. E’ stato così da sempre…il mio periodo all’interno della rock band è stato grandioso e gliene sono davvero grato. Racconterò ai miei figli storie che certa gente sogna di vivere e che invece io ho vissuto. Ora questa esperienza in Europa è incredibile, far musica, esibirsi in giro per il mondo, bello!
Ti esibivi di fronte a migliaia di persone con la tua band e ora fai lo stesso dietro la consolle, sono esperienze diverse o danno le stesse sensazioni?
Quando ti esibisci di fronte a quelle folle sta tutto nell’energia e cosa sei capace di di farne…la prendi, la ridai, la musica è un dono. Tuttavia, il dancefloor ti da un feedback molto più forte di quello di un concerto.
Hai iniziato a vivere l’elettronica in Sud America e ora la vivi in Europa, a tuo modo di vedere che differenze ci sono tra la scene elettronica sud americana e quella europea?
La differenza principale è che in Europa ci sono 3-4 generazioni che sono nate ascoltando questa musica, e in Sud America invece è qualcosa di veramente nuovo. In Europa ci sono tanti club, dai più grandi ai seminterrati. Questo significa che ci sono sempre nuovi artisti e nuove tendenze e così le cose si muovono molto velocemente. In Sud America invece abbiamo molti meno preconcetti e questo questo ti permette di mostrare un punto di vista diverso, il che rende la cosa più interessante.
La tua carriera da artista dell’elettronica è cominciata intensamente con la collaborazione con alcune label quali Wolf+Lamb, Crosstown Rebels e Raum, come sono state queste esperienze?
Dorian Paic è stato il primo che ha creduto in me…in qualcuno che veniva sostanzialmente dal nulla, che suonava il piano più che l’house music. E’ stata quella canzone con Damian Schwartz su Raum Music che ha fatto iniziare tutto. Per quanto riguarda Wolf+Lamb e Crosstown posso dire solo belle cose. Sono state un pacchetto di buone tracce nel posto giusto al momento giusto. Anche la mia release con Ryan Crosson su Supplement Facts è stata importante per me, da quella è nata una grande amicizia con Guy Gerber, con il quale ho avuto migliaia di bellissimi momenti, cosa che ha fatto si che facessimo uscire delle tracce insieme…
E dopo sei stato notato da Loco Dice e quindi Desolat. Come procede la tua collaborazione con questa label?
Desolat è grandiosa, è la mia casa. Mi sento veramente parte di essa e loro mi fanno sentire il benvenuto ogni giorno, e questo è il motivo per cui rilascerò li il mio album di debutto il mese prossimo. Sono fonte di grande ispirazione e mi danno la piena libertà nel fare musica e mostrare il mio punto di vista. è un progetto a lungo termine, Dusseldorf è la mia casa ora, il mio studio, Dice e tutta la gang sono la mia famiglia.
Parliamo proprio del tuo album di debutto “Patio de Juegos” che uscirà a marzo. Puoi darci qualche anticipazione?
Ne sono tanto contento! E’ composto da 14 canzoni, 14 parti di me, mostrando i miei lati di pianista e musicista, ma anche la musica che voglio sentire nei club. E’ il risultato del mio primo anno in Europa, è un album sia da ascoltarsi a casa, sia per il dancefloor. E’ un album che viene dal cuore, spero che alla gente piaccia.
Le tue performance con Loco Dice sono ormai un punto fermo del clubbing europeo, com’è la vostra intesa musicale?
Amo suonare con Dice, lui è il dancefloor! Abbiamo avuto notti indimenticabili insieme! La mia intesa con la musica va dal corpo alla mente, credo che la musica elettronica sia una cosa fisica, alla fine devi far pensare la gente e quindi fargli sentire qualcosa. Dice il re del “maneggiare” le folle, impari sempre qualcosa con lui. Mi fa crescere come artista in ogni show.
Sei un artista che si esibisce Live, ti basi molto sull’improvvisazione oppure prima di un set cerchi sempre di avere le idee chiare su cosa vuoi suonare?
Preferisco non aver alcuna idea di cosa sta per accadere! Mi piace valutare l’energia della gente nel club e restituirgliela con le mie tracce. Sicuramente ci sono delle canzoni che la gente conosce e che tu vuoi suonare, ma ogni volta è diverso e ogni canzone sopraggiunge in modo diverso, penso sia questa la sensazione che ti fa continuare ad amare quello che stai facendo e ti fa crescere.
Quanto ha influito il tuo passato sulla musica che suoni e produci ora?
Tutto influisce, la mia vita, i cambiamenti, nuove e vecchie passioni. Il tuo background musicale si accresce ad ogni canzone che senti e questo è grandioso, la musica si muove ogni volta…
Dal passato al futuro, cosa c’è nel futuro di Guti?
Il mio album, il tour mondiale del nuovo album, nuove tracce, nuove passioni e ancora nuove tracce!
Ultima cosa, il 19 febbraio verrai a suonare al Rashomon a Roma, cosa ci trasmetterai e cosa la gente deve aspettarsi da te?
E’ stata come un esplosione a Roma la scorsa estate con Dice e tINI, e per questo sto davvero pensando di tornare a suonare lì. La gente deve aspettarsi da me quello che deve aspettarsi tutte le sere: deve pensare che sto andando a suonare nel club pensando che quella sarà la miglior serata della mia vita.

If i have to make an image to describe Guti i think i would choose “the hero from the two worlds”. In this situations for sure we don’t talk about military stuff but we talk about important results in the musical field. Raised in a family with the music in veins Guti takes a very special musical growth. In the young age he was a self teaching in piano and a little bit later he was involved in a particular blues wave that will take him to be a very famous rock artist in Latin America. With his rock band he had a great success, but the great reputation was not enough for him. His life seems like dominated by the need to discover something new and the refuse for the monotony. These are the reasons why Guti started to get involved in other way of music like Salsa, Jazz and the electronic music. By chance he found himself in a studio experimenting on house beats and than a little bit later was catapulted into the heart of the German techno house movement. Moved to Dusseldorf (the headquarter of Desolat) is now one of the major talent of the label founded by Loco Dice and Martin Buttrich. Guti loves to discover something new every time and we want to do the same about him, so let’s check out what he told us.
Your was a very active life, from the rock in Argentina to the electronic music in Europe, how it was?
It was a natural journey, maybe looks crazy from the outside but for me it is just music. I have been on this since forever…my time in a rock band was amazing and I am really grateful. I will tell my kids some stories that people dream to live, and that I was there. Now this experience in Europe is unbelievable, making my music, performing around the world, it feels so good.
You performed in front of thousand of people with your band and now you do the same behind the console, are they different experience or they give the same feeling?
When you perform in front of those massive crowds it is all about energy and what you are able to do with it…You give it back as music is a gift. However, the dance floor gives you a feedback that is even stronger than a concert.
you started to live the electronic music in South America and now you live this movement in Europe, in your opinion what are the differences between these two scenes?
The main difference is that in Europe you have 3 or 4 generations that were born listening to this music, and in South America it is something really new. In Europe you have many clubs form the big super-clubs to the underground basements. That means new artists, new tendencies happening all the time so the things move forward really fast. But also down in South American we have got less pre-conceptions, we can show a different point of view and that can make it more interesting.
Your career as an electronic artist started intensely with the collaboration with some labels like Wolf+Lamb, Crosstown Rebels and Raum how was these experiences?
Dorian Paic was the first who trusted in me…in someone who essentially came from nowhere playing piano on top of house music. It was that song with Damian Schwartz on Raum Musik which started everything. Regarding Wolf and Lamb and Crosstown I can say only nice things. It was just a case of good songs in the right moment in the right place. Also my releases on Supplement Facts with Ryan Crosson was important for me, and from that came a beautiful friendship with Guy Gerber with whom I have had tons of great times, which has lately resulted us in releasing songs together…
And than you were noted by Loco Dice, and that means Desolat. How this collaboration is going?
Desolat is amazing, it is my home. I feel really part of it, as they make me feel welcome every day, and that’s why I am releasing my album debut here next month. They are a big inspiration, and give me total freedom to do my music and show the world my point of the view. It is a long term project, Düsseldorf is my home now, my studio and Dice and the gang are my family.
Let’s talk about your debut album “Patio de Juegos” that will be released on March, can you give us a little preview?
I’m so happy about this! There are 14 songs, 14 parts of me, showing my side as a pianist and musician, but also the music I want to hear in the club. It is the result of my first year in Europe, it is an album to listen to at home, and also for the dance floor! It is has been made from the heart, and I hope everyone enjoys it…
Your performances with Loco Dice are very famous in the European clubbing, how is your musical understanding?
I love to play with dice, he is the dance floor! And we have had unforgettable nights together! My understanding of music goes from the body to the mind, I believe electronic music is a physical thing, but at the end you have to make the people think and then feel. Dice is the king of handling crowds and you always learn with him. He makes grow as an artist in every show.
You are an artist who performs Live, do you use a lot of improvisation or you prefer having a clear idea of what are you going to play?
I prefer to not have any idea of what is going to happen! I like to gauge the energy of the people in the club and give it back in my songs. Yes you have some songs that people know and you want to play too, but every night is different and each song comes in a different way, and i guess that is the feeling that keeps you loving this and growing.
How your past influenced the music that you produce and play now?
Everything is an influence, my life, my changes, old loves and new loves. Your musical background is getting bigger in every song you hear, and that is amazing, music moves all the time…
From the past to the future, what is there in the Guti’s future?
My album, touring the world with it, and new songs, new loves and then more songs!
Finally, you are playing at Rashomo in Rome on the 19th Feb – are you looking forward to it, and what can people expect from you that night?
We had a blast in Rome last summer with Dice and tINI, and I am really looking forward to playing there again. People can expect form me the same as every night: I am going to the club every night thinking it will be the best night of my life.
