Philadephia, luogo conosciuto anche come “città dell’amore fraterno”. Un sentimento molto forte legato al nome di questa città, sentimento che accomuna anche Josh Wink e la sua passione, la musica. L’amore, come ogni sentimento, non ha regole e questa cosa è ben chiara nella mente di Josh, il quale sostiene fermamente che la libertà e la sregolatezza sono il punto di partenza per un arista. Josh Wink non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni, il noto Dj/producer nato e cresciuto nella città della Pensylvania rappresenta oggi una figura che appartiene sia alla storia sia al presente del mondo della musica elettronica. Nella sua carriera non si è limitato alla produzione di dischi che ci han dato un “Higher State Of Consciousness” su chi era e su chi è Josh Wink, ma è stato (ed è) anche imprenditore della musica. Con la sua Ovum oggi può vantare un panorama artistico tra i migliori d’Europa e del mondo.
Ciao Josh, benvenuto su Soundwall!
Una carriera iniziata da giovanissimo, a quell’età cosa ti ha spinto ad inserirti nel mondo della musica?
Ho fatto il Dj fino all’età di 18 anni. Non aspettavo altro che suonare qualcosa di mio insieme alle tracce di altra gente. E così ho comprato l’equipaggiamento e ho cominciato a fare la mia musica. Anche l’acid house proveniente da Chicago mi ha molto ispirato per la produzione.
Poco più che teen ager hai notato che la tua passione cominciava a diventare un qualcosa di più serio, com’è esser giovani all’interno di un business così importante?
Non è così importante quello che io sento. Da giovane a volte la gente non ti prende sul serio. Ma i tempi sicuramente sono cambiati. Penso che la passione e l’onestà siano più importanti, quelle le puoi avere ad ogni età.
A soli 24 anni avevi già la tua etichetta, come è nato il progetto e come si è evoluto nel tempo?
Rilasciavo molte tracce su etichette di altra gente e volevo fortemente farlo su una mia, il che vuol dire sotto il mio controllo e sotto la mia tutela. E così è nata Ovum. Non è stata una cosa facile, anche se non c’erano molte etichette a quel tempo, il che ha reso le cose un po’ più semplici. Anche se a volte è difficile iniziare a fare le cose da solo.
Abbiam parlato della tua carriera e ora ci piacerebbe avere un “Higher State Of Consciousness” della tua musica. Come la definiresti? Hai un pensiero particolare a riguardo?
Sembra quasi di aver creato un genere. La mia musica attraversa confini e sta sopra i generi. Le mie traccie possono essere suonate da Dj house, ma allo stesso tempo lo possono fare anche Dj techno senza difficoltà. E in qualche modo funziona. Ora la musica va così. Anni fa un Dj deep house non poteva suonare una traccia techno e vice versa. Sono molto felice di fare della musica che combini più elementi.
Parlando di musica e in particolare musica elettronica è inevitabile parlare degli strumenti. Durante la tua carriera come ti sei rapportato con le tecnologie? Sia da studio, sia dietro la consolle.
Sono cresciuto con lo sviluppo dei computers e dei sintetizzatori…Così è stato naturale, come musicista, circondarmi di tecnologia ed usarla al meglio. Sono andato al College e ho studiato l’utilizzo dei computer in campo musicale e ingegneria. Ho sempre utilizzato tutto ciò che era possibile per fare il dj, quindi per me è stato normale, ho provato e testato nuove attrezzature durante tutta la mia carriera…cosa che faccio tutt’ora.
In così tanto tempo di attività la tua borsa dei dischi avrà visto al suo interno un numero enorme di tracce. Rinnovi completamente la tua borsa per ogni tua performance oppure ci son dei dischi che non puoi mai lasciare a casa? Se ce ne sono potresti dirci quali sono?
Purtroppo attualmente non uso più una borsa dei dischi, ora utilizzo il computer, il quale mi fa da record bag. A volte mi manca viaggiare con i miei vecchi amici in vinile. Ma se penso ai problemi che si creano viaggiando con loro… Sono felice di non dovermi preoccupare che vadano persi o che vengan rubati dopo ogni volo. Per quanto riguarda le tracce devo conoscerle e impararle prima di suonarle. Nel dubbio sto su un pezzo classico… Che potrebbe essere qualcosa di mio come: “Higher States”, “Don’t Laugh”, “I am Ready” o “SuperFreak” o qualcosa come “French Kiss” di Lil’ Louis or “Voodoo Ray” di A Guy Called Gerald.
Sei nativo americano, ma con tutti i tuoi viaggi ormai sei diventato cittadino del mondo, che differenze noti quando vai a suonare in Europa, Asia piuttosto che nella tua America?
Mi sento fortunato nel sapere che quando la gente viene a sentirmi è consapevole del fatto che cercherò di mischiare un po’ i generi. E così non suonerò ne solo minimal, ne solo tech house o deep. Mi piace molto far intraprendere alle folle un viaggio attraverso cosa ho nella mente in quel momento. Suonando cosa mi sento le persone sono fiduciose su cosa ho in serbo per loro, il mio credo non cambia la mia musica.
Sei stato un pioniere della musica elettronica e durante la tua esperienze ti sarai fatto un’idea sulla direzione del movimento musicale. Pensi che la musica elettronica stia prendendo la direzione giusta oppure pensi che ci sia qualcosa che potrebbe essere migliorato?
Credo e spero che la gente capisca che le etichette fanno ciò che fanno per vivere, internet il file sharing significano davvero rubare, il che rende le cose più difficili alle persone che utilizzano la loro passione per vivere. Per un prezzo che va da 0,99 centesimi a 2,49 dollari ci si può comprare la musica. Non è così costoso. è davvero molto importante che le persone realizzino questo e supportino le loro label preferite comprando la loro musica.
Dopo queste domande un po’ difficili e molto filosofiche ti vogliamo chiedere qualcosa di più legato alla realtà. Cosa bolle in pentola in Ovum per il futuro?
Ora come ora stiamo lavorando sullo sviluppo degli artisti con degli LP. Dopo la grande uscita del CD di Shlomi Aber è pronto per quest’estate un suo remix LP. Philadephia, a place also known as the “City of Brotherly Love”. A strong feeling is linked to this city, a feeling that is linkd also to Josh Wink and his passion, the music. Love as other feelings has no rules, and that thing is very clear in the Josh’s mind. His strog thought is that freedom and the lack-of-rules is the fundamental starting point for an artist. Josh Wink for sure needs no intruductions, the well known Dj/producer is born and raised in the Pensylvanian town rappresents the history and the present of electronic music. His career was not limited in producing records that give us an “higer state of consciousness” about who is Josh Wink, but he is also an interpreneur of music. With is own label Ovum he can show an high level artistic roster, one of the best of Europe and the world scene.
Your career started when you were so young, at that age who prompt you to get into the music world?
I was djing for several years by year 18. And I was wanting to play my own ideas instead of other peoples records. So, I bought equipment and starting making my own music. Also, acid house music out of Chicago was very inspiring for me to make my own too.
A little bit more than a teen ager you noticed that your passion was turning in somthing more serious, how is being young inside a so important business?
It’s not that important I Feel. Sometimes people don’t take you as serious when you’re younger. But, times have changed that’s for sure. I believe passion and integrity are more important, which you can have at any age.
You were only 24 when you built up your own label, how did the project born and how was his evolution during the time?
I was releasing a lot of records on other peoples labels and I truly wanted to to release it myself, with my control and protection. So, that’s how Ovum became. It wasn’t an easy thing, however, there were not so many labels in the market, which made things a bit easier. But, it’s always difficult starting things from new on your own.
We talked about your career and now we would like to have an “Higher State Of Consciousness” about your music. How can you describe your music? Have you got a particular opinion about?
It seems to have created a genre of it’s own. My music has been able to cross boundaries and genres. Where a house dj can play one of my tracks and at the same time a techno dj can do the same without thought. It some how worked. Now the sound of music is doing this. But, years ago, you didn’t have a deep house dj playing a techno record or Visa Versa. So, I’m very happy to make music which ties in many elements.
Talking about music, and especially electronic music is necessary to talk about instruments. During your career how did you relate with technology? Also in studio and also behind the deck.
I grew up with the development of computers and synthesis… So, it was just natural as a musician to surround myself with technology to use it to my best ability. I went to college and learned about computers in music and engineering. I always used whatever I could as a dj, so it was normal for me to test and try new gear throughout my career.. Which I still do now.
In so mouch time of activity your records bag carried a great number of records. Do you renovate completely your bag every time or are there some records that you will never forget at home? If there are some can you tell us about these records?
Well, unfortunately I don’t use an actual record bag anymore as I have been using a computer to be my digital record case. At times I miss traveling with my old vinyl friends. But, when I think of the hassle with traveling with them. I’m happy I don’t have to worry about them being lost or stolen after each flight. But, I get to know my tracks by playing them before playing out, then learning them. When in doubt I would play a classic track. Weather it be one of my own like: Higher States, Don’t Laugh, I am Ready or SuperFreak or something “French Kiss” By Lil’ Louis or “Voodoo Ray” by A guy called Gerald.
You are american but you play all around the world and so you become a cosmopolitan artist, so what differences you note whan you play in Europe, Asia or America?
I feel fortunate that most people when they come out to hear me know that I mix music together. Meaning they know I play all different genres of music. So, I won’t just play all minimal or all tech house or all deep. I really like to take the crowd on a journey of what’s going on in my head. By playing how I feel, people trust what I have in store for them, so my integrity doesn’t change just my music.
You were a pioner of electronic music and for sure during your experience you made up a clear thought about the music movement. So do you think that the electronic music is developing in the right way or there is something that would be changed in your opinion?
I wish and hope that people understand that labels and producers need to make a living and that internet file sharing is really file Stealing and it really makes things difficult for people to make a living doing their love and passion. So, for .99¢ -2.49 you can buy and own your own music. It’s not expensive at all. So, it’s very very important for people to realize this and support their favorite labels and artists by buying their music.
After these difficult and a little bit phiolosophical questions we would like to ask you something more linked ath the reality. What’s cooking Ovum for the future?
We’re working on developing artists with LP’s now. So, after coming off a great release from Shlomi Aber’s CD, we have a remix LP coming from him for the summer.
