Venerdì 22 Gennaio 2010 sono iniziate le serate targate DNF al Room 26 di Roma. All’inaugurazione non poteva non esserci il tedesco biondo, carissimo amico di Andrea Pelino e amante dei clubs di tutto il mondo. Si è presentato alle 2 di notte circa, accompagnato da molti amici tutti contenti e sorridenti come noi che lo stavamo attendendo da inizio serata. Cordiale e con quel suo immancabile sorriso che lo contraddistingue e lo rende sempre allegro, ha prima risposto ad una nostra breve ma intensa intervista e poi è corso in consolle, contento come un bambino di iniziare a suonare ed ha cominciato immediatamente a farci ballare con la sua musica. Bravo Timo!!!
Timo, hai passato più della metà della vita con le cuffie al collo e i vinili tra le mani, hai remixato chiunque, hai prodotto album e singoli di successo, hai suonato davanti folle enormi e nei club più importanti del pianeta. Uno come te cosa si aspetta dal futuro ? Che altre ambizioni hai ?
C’è una ragione molto semplice, sono guidato dall’amore per la musica, questa è la mia lingua per parlare con la gente. Ho molte cose che vanno in diverse direzioni. Produrre con Sante Pucello (Santos) è supereccitante e quando si ha la possibilità di lavorare con persone di talento come lui … non vorrei mai fermarmi 🙂
Sappiamo che oltre alla musica hai una grande passione per i vini. Se dovessi paragonarti ad un vino per descriverti, quale sceglieresti ?
Molto probabilmente un vino italiano: un Amarone.
Sei una persona molto legata alla famiglia, hai sepre detto che le tue origini sono la cosa più importante. Cosa significa essere un padre dj ?
Non c’e niente di male. Ovviamente non è un modo di vivere che è considerato una “vita normale”, ma alla fine è importante essere se stessi e vivere la vita…cosi faccio anch’io!
Siamo pur sempre un music magazine, quindi, vuoi parlarci di “Mutant Clan”? Quali esigenze artistiche hanno portato alla nascita di questo nuovo progetto ?
E’ Santos e il mio aprirmi nel campo sperimentale con collaborazioni in varie direzioni. Ci piace invitare ospiti e lavorare su nuovo materiale, non importa se dance, pop o avanguardista. Abbiamo fatto già alcune registrazioni con Alex Dolby, Monika Kruse e molti altri e ci sarà altro ancora. Ci sono grandi idee in progetto. Sono sicuro, che ci saranno presto buone notizie a riguardo.
Qui in Italia siamo particolarmente fieri dei talenti nostrani. Per questo vorremmo sapere: come nasce il tuo rapporto con Santos ? E’ solo frutto delle sue capacità esplose definitivamente nell’ultimo biennio, o c’era già una solida amicizia di fondo ?
Ci siamo incontrati la prima volta nel 2001 a Ibiza. Inizialmente ci siamo persi di vista ma ci siamo rincontrati 2 anni dopo con lo stesso amore per la musica. Abbiamo cercato di lavorare insieme su un progetto e velocemente abbiamo deciso di mantenerci sempre in contatto. Ora viviamo più o meno insieme in una fattoria vicino ad Hannover, in Germania, dove abbiamo lo studio e lavoriamo continuamente. Lui è un produttore incredibile, un’ ottima persona e un caro amico. Sono orgoglioso di lavorare con lui!
Ascoltando attentamente (senza entrare in merito alla scelta di determinati suoni/strumenti) i tuoi ultimi lavori e paragonandoli a quelli di qualche anno fa, è impossibile non notare un’impennata nella qualità del prodotto finale, soprattutto se si pensa a come suonano “Subtellite” o “Jetstream”. Sbagliamo a credere che qualcosa nel tuo studio sia cambiato ?
Beh è questo il motivo per cui io lavoro con Santos. Avevo bisogno di una fresca influenza, quindi anche noi abbiamo sfruttato le nostre competenze, dal momento che ci siamo incontrati, aprendoci completamente e lavorando continuamente; il fatto che viviamo vicino ci dà molte più opportunità per sperimentare. Grazie per avermi chiesti questo, è quello che pensiamo anche noi.
Oltre a tua madre, sulla top di myspace c’è un’altra figura molto importante, Andrea Pelino. Che rapporto hai con lui e con il Circoloco ? Tu sei stato uno dei primi artisti a far parte della crew, quanto ha influito musicalmente una situazione del genere sulla tua carriera ?
Andrea è un caro amico da molti anni ed il Circoloco è la mia “famiglia”. Il suo senso per la qualità e per l’organizzazione di creare una situazione di pazzia pura è unico!
Non c’è da stupirsi, molte persone dicono che il Circoloco è il club migliore del mondo… la sua atmosfera è inimitabile! Anche lui ha avuto e ha una forte influenza su di me. Ha aiutato me e la mia carriera molte volte.

Friday, 22nd of Jannuary, DNF parties started at Rome’s Room 26. The first guest could not be the blond german, great friend of Andrea Pelino and lover of the best clubs in the world: Timo Maas. He arrived at the venue at 2 0’clock in the morning with some friends, they were happy as us that were waiting for one of us favourites djs. He first answered some of our questions and then he began playing like he always does. Great Timo !!!
Timo, you’ve passed more than half of your life with headphones around your neck and vrecords in hand, you’ve remixed almost anyone, you’ve produced albums and singles of great success, you’ve played in front of enormous crowds and in the worlds most important clubs. What does someone like await from the future ? What other ambitions do you have ?
There`s a very simple reason, I`m driven by my love to music. It’s my language to speak with people
I got several things running in very diverse directions…the production with Sante Pucello (Santos) is superexiting and openminded and when you have the opportunity working with so talented people like him …it`ll never stop 🙂
We know that apart from music, you have a great passion for wine. If you had to compare yourself to a wine, which would you choose ?
Most likely a nice italian Amarone.
You’re a person that’s very close to your family, you always said that your origings are the most important thing. What does it mean being a father and DJ ?
Nothing wrong with it…of course its not that life, what people understand as “normal life”…but by the end of the day its important to be yourself and live it…so do I!
Of course we’re a music magazine, so could you speak to us about “Mutant Clan” ? What musical or artistic concept brought you to start this new project ?
It`s Santos and my wide open experimental field…with collaborations in several directions…we like to invite guests and work on new stuff…doesn`t matter, if dance or pop or avantgarde… We did some records already with Alex Dolby, Monika Kruse and several others…and more to come… There`s some great ideas for projects. I`m pretty sure, u will hear of it soon…
Here in Italy we’re very proud of our own, so we would like to know, how did you relationship with Santos start ? Is it because of his abilities that came to light in the past 2 years, or were you already good friends before ?
We met first time in 2001 on Ibiza…lost contact and met back about 2 years back properly… with the same love for the music…we tried to work together on a project and pretty quickly we decided to stick the heads closer together. Now we live moreorless together on a farm near Hanover in germany, got the studios there and work continuously. He is an amazing producer and even more amazing personality & friend. I`m proud to work with him!
Listening closely (without going into too much detail about the great choice of sounds/instruments), your more recent work, comparing it to your older tracks, it’s impossible to not take note of the rise in quality of the final product, especially if you think of the sounds of “Subtellite” or “Jetstream”. Are we wrong or has something in your studio changed ?
Well ! That’s the reason why I work with Santos. I needed some fresh influence also we have advanced our skills, since we met! Totally openminded And continously do…the fact, that we live close gives us a lot more oppurtunities for experiments… Thanks for saying this…approves, what we think too.
Apart from your mother, in your top myspace friends there is another important figure, Andrea Pelino. What relationship do you have with him and with Circoloco ? You were one of the first artists that became part of the crew. How much did a situation like that influence your career musically ?
Andrea is a very good friend since many years…and Circoloco is my “family”. His sense for quality and perfectly arranged crazyness is unique!
No wonder, many people say Circoloco is the best club in the world. It’s atmosphere is superunique! He also had and has a strong influence on me… He has helped me and my career many times.
