Il Vinyl Pimp di Hackney Wick, quartiere dell’ormai zona più hype dell’ultimo lustro, la Londra east che tanto sta facendo parlare di sè, è forse il negozio migliore al momento in fatto di vinili. Non solo potete trovare una selezione di 45.000 (sì, esatto quarantacinquemila) vinili che coprono tutto il possibile spettro dell’etichetta che va sotto il nome di musica elettronica, ma potete trovare il tutto riversato zelantemente in formato digitale, unitamente ad una gentilezza amichevole (e non stucchevole come spesso capita qui). Vinyl Pimp è in effetti il più grosso rivenditore di usato di tutta l’Inghilterra, ed è quel negozio che ha su Discogs il miglior feedback di tutto il sito. Sebbene sia un grossista, compra enormi quantità di dischi da collezionisti privati o da negozi, da Vinyl Pimp si può trovare davvero ottima roba… Abbiamo incontrato il titolare Hon, il quale si è gentilmente prestato per la breve intervista e ad alcuni scatti.
Ciao, ti andrebbe di presentarti e di presentare il negozio? Come è nata la tua attività?
Il mio nome è Eric Man Hon Luk ma tutti mi chiamamo Hon, e sono il titolare di Vinyl Pimp. Abbiamo iniziato, anzi no, prima c’ero soltanto io (ora ho contato almeno quattro dipendenti, il ché significa che devono esserecene altrettanti). Ho iniziato sei anni fa vendendo dischi in camera mia. Mi sono prima messo a vendere dischi, ma da subito sono passato a fare da mediatore per gente che aveva collezioni intere da vendere ed acquirenti: io vendevo loro i dischi, il ricavato andava ad entrambi; sia a loro che erano i titolari dei dischi e a me che avevo eseguito la transizione e tutto il resto.
Perché un cliente dovrebbe scegliere il tuo negozio?
Bè perchè abbiamo la più vasta collezione di vinili di tutta Londra e di tutta l’Inghilterra, la quale consta di 45.000 (sì esatto, quarantacinquemila) titoli. È possibile ascoltare tutti questi titoli qui in negozio e allo stesso tempo sono tutti stati trasportati digitalmente e sincronizzati online, così che si possano ascoltare tutti su Discogs.
Come scegli gli item che vendi? Hai preferenze? Scegli tu le label?
Noi non compriamo al dettaglio, compriamo soltanto grandi quantità fino anche a diecimile titoli alla volta, che di solito è ogni due settimane. Non scegliamo niente in particolare, sappiamo che sono buoni perché siamo competenti e acquistiamo in blocco. Allo stesso modo non scegliamo noi le label, compriamo intere collezioni. Chi viene a comprare da noi conosce la musica e conosce ciò che sta andando a comprare, noi ci limitiamo a mettere su Discogs i brani e quando il disco è particolarmente da collezione lo mettiamo su Facebook e facciamo una piccola pubblicità online, ma niente di più.
Abbiamo attraversato il periodo del download e la conseguenza è stata ormai da qualche anno il ritorno al vinile. Cosa ne pensi, al di là del fatto che hai un business che si basa sul vinile? Tu hai cavalcato un trend che già da qualche tempo si stava gonfiando.
Sostanzialmente penso che alla gente piaccia tenere qualcosa di fisico in mano, no? Qualcosa che duri che suoni meglioe che sì, che sia anche bello da vedere. È semplicemente un formato migliore.
Un’ultima domanda: in che modo pensi che Londra possa influire sul tuo negozio?
Bè, i motivi per cui Londra sia il posto giusto per un negozio di dischi sono piuttosto chiari: 12 milioni di persone, facendo i numeri; perchè qui c’è davvero una vasta scelta di generi e di gusti musicali. Inoltre esiste un gusto per la ricerca come non si trova altrove, se devo dire.

The record shop The Vinyl Pimp of Hackney Wick is one of the coolest shop around in one of the coolest area of the city, that East of London that it has became very popular in the last ten years. Here you can find 45.000 items (yes, forty-five thousands items) about all the possible different kinds of music that goes under the tag of “Dance Music”, and each of them has been reversed digitally, so you can also listen to it in the shop or online on Discogs. Vinyl Pimp is actually the biggest re-seller of second hand vinyl of all London and UK and there – in this massive amounts of items – you can find also rare stuffs together with a lovely and polite attitude from the owner Hon.
Hi, would you mind to introduce yourself and your shop? Can you tell us a brief story of your shop?
My name is Man Hon Luk, but everybody calls me Hon, how you spell it? It is Hon = “Hotel”, “Oscar”, “November”. We started, no wait, I started selling records six years ago from my bedroom and I started by selling some other people’s collections that they could not do sell themselves, so the handle off to me, I sold them to someone who wants to buy them, then they got paid and so I got pay.
Why a customer should choose your shop?
People should come here because we have the biggest collection of record comparing with the other London record shops and other UK record shops, we have here more records than everyone else. Everything is here, all the 45 thousands items we have you can listen to therm here and also they have been browsed online, so they are all synchronised.
How do you choose the items you sell? Do you choose labels?
We just get them, we don’t choose singles items, we just buy collections. We only take on big big collections from 2000 up to 10000 items, we know they are good collections and we get them. You know, we just pick up big quantities every couple of weeks and we just go troughs. Same as for labels, we don’t have to push labels or records because the stuff we get it is already established, you know, all the old school staff are already established, all the rest, people already know what they want. I mean we put stuff on Discogs and we just sometime take picture of the real rare stuff, and put that on facebook when it come out, just a little teaser on line, nothing more.
We’ve just passed through the download era, one of the effects has been this return to vinyl stuff. What do you thing about, considering that your business is based on this. You are just leveraging this trend who’s becoming bigger and bigger.
I guess we just need something to hold in our hands, don’t we? Something that sounds better and yes something that is also cooler than a digital format. In general I think is just is a supreme support.
One last question: in which way do you think London is helping you and your business?
Well, the reasons why London is the best place for a record shop are quite obvious: considering the City and the Greater London area, you have 11, 12 millions of people. You can find people from everywhere, you can find pretty much every kind of music and every kind of people, which come from everywhere to pick up my records.
